I configured both the vostro and the XPS and the same specs (well close enough) and the XPS is £110 more expensive. I'm looking at spending no more than £500 in total.

Is the XPS design, build etc worth the extra £110?

Yes it is worth it depending on the specs you pick. Though I really like the look of the Vostro 1510 so it is a toss up unless you get the specific 1530 features.
