    I am about to purchase the XPS Studio m1340 with the following features. Can the current owners please help me out with some info? Does your laptop get very hot only when you run high end games or does it get hot even when browsing as well?

    Features:
    * 13.3 inch Widescreen Display
    * Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz, 3MB cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    * 4GB DDR3 RAM
    * 320GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
    * Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Operating System SP1
    * 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9500M Graphics Card

    Do you always use a cooling pad with your laptop?

    I have a faster (hotter) CPU, more RAM, same video adapter, and run a LOT of virtual machines. My heat isn't an issue when running them without a cooler. The only thing I'd suggest is to make sure you have the latest BIOS, and if aren't using the extended battery, just prop up the back a little bit. Mine runs quite cool with the extended battery after 9+ hours of usage at work without my cooler running VMs.

    If you really care about the heat issue, then i would recommend you to change your gpu from 9500m to n10m-GS (210mGS). The reason is that it runs cooler than the 9500m and runs much faster also.
