    Drivers | Synaptics

Just get it right from the Synaptics site. It works amazingly well on every computer I've put it on and really helped to change my whole opinion of using apps in Win8. The only problem is that on some computers Windows Update tries to go back and install an older official OEM driver after you install this one. That's kind of annoying. Just run Windows Update after installation and see if it finds a "new" trackpad driver. If it does, I think you can try hiding it or something, but I'm not sure.

It keeps failing to install, the old driver had some trouble uninstalling but I used Revo Uninstaller and it appears to be gone, but I can't install the new one. Any ideas?

I don't know. That doesn't sound good. I always do a full clean install when upgrading operating systems. It's more work, but when you finish it's like having a brand new computer and everything works perfectly. (It also forces you to go through and save all your files to make sure you have everything backed up.)

Also, you probably already did this, but make sure you actually have a Symantics touchpad. I'm typing this on an old Dell which has an Alps touchpad, so I had a lot of trouble finding a driver that has the Win8 gestures. I ended up buying a Microsoft mouse for this computer that has Win8 drivers.

I actually did a fresh install due to getting a new hard drive a few weeks ago, and then I installed the driver I linked. Some parts of the driver seem to be "stuck" somehow, not allowing anything newer to be installed over it. I also just tried a system restore, that made the old 8 multitouch driver I linked functional at least, but I still can't install the new one.

I really don't want to do a refresh to fix it, as that would uninstall every non-app store program, and I have a bunch of IDEs that take eons to install.

All right, I got the new driver to install. It does seem better, most of the time, but some of the functionality (like scrolling, tap zones, anything that isn't basic) still seems to give out from time to time. Weird. Does that happen for you?

No, I've never had anything like that happen, and I've put that driver (and similar OEM drivers) on many different Win8 laptops. Like I said, it was just the opposite - I was really surprised by how smooth it made everything. I don't know what to tell you, but good luck and hopefully it ends up working out for you.
