I know when we first got our's we read about the grainy LG Screens and worked hard to avoid it. Now we are looking to get a replacement system. Has this issue been resolved? Or do we still need to be on the look-out for those bad screens and make a special request not to have the LG ones. Does anyone know? Has anyone heard of any problems in the last few months?
Thanks,
Nigori

Honestly, i would just skip the laptop. New ones should be out soon.

does it matter, dont they still has that problematic 8600m GT?
i think the XPS M1530 has been replaced with Studio XPS 16 -
and your right about the studio xps 16. i forgot about that line. i need to stop slacking! -
when do you guys think dell is going to release new laptops?
I am planning to buy a laptop within a month ... can't wait longer as this will be my first lappy
But the gpu issues are scaring me -
hey, well just to provide some pieces of info that might prove useful,
- the dell xps m1530 outruns the poor studio xps 16, the geforce 8600gt is still better than that ATI.
- the LG screens are the good ones, the samsung ones are actually the grainy ones ( or was it the other way round? ) anyway i wouldn't know since my screen is the 1920x1200, and it IS grainy, but i love it anyways, if you chose the LED one your pretty much safe, those are good screens.
- the GPU issue with the m1530 has been worked out, but i do recommend you buy an extended warranty, since these things tend to break ( i got a 4 yr warranty )
- studio xps are still buggy as hell, specially the studio xps 16 witch gets blue screens of death with every windows update, and has a touchpad problem.
- if you dont want gaming power then you can pretty much find a decent notebook anywhere, but if you do, then the m1530 is a very good performer, yet very portable, ( if you want even more power in a 15' screen check with Sager, they have Very powerful notebooks )
- in personal experience, my xps m1530 has worked and passed all my abusive torture tests, it has gotten tossed arround, overclocked, overheated, it has run all my games without a problem, and it has served me well, now why does it have a bad reputation? because crybabies who get a failure come here and post this and that, but seriously, your GPU fails, you call dell, they change your Mobo in 3 days, your done, no need to cry, its just electronics, they fail.... -

The Samsung screens were the grainy ones, but they've improved a lot since then. They're not great screens but they're not grainy anymore, even though the model number is often the same. I've seen the older and newer Samsung screens first hand. The AUO and LG are still better though - the new samsung has bad viewing angles especially.
Essentially though, all the screens the M1530 comes with now should be fine. -
if you are convinced that it beats the 8600gt then prove it with raw FPS -

"Nvidias GeForce 8600M GT graphics card (with 256MB of video memory) notched a very good 3DMark03 score of 7261nearly 3,000 points higher than the average mainstream notebook. The Dell XPS M1530 churned out a decent F.E.A.R. score of 45 frames per second on autodetect mode, which dropped to 23 frames per second with the settings maxed out."

"The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 discrete graphics chipset (with 512MB of memory) notched scores of 11,697 and 4,371 on 3DMark03 and 3DMark06, respectivelyboth double the mainstream average, and comparable to the HP HDX 16s scores of 12,852 and 4,116. This translated into a fairly strong rate of 77 frames per second when we played F.E.A.R. on autodetect (1024 x 768-pixel resolution). With the resolution bumped up to 1920 x 1080, and effects set to maximum, it dipped to 24 fpsnot the greatest, but then again, this isnt a dedicated gaming rig."

Note that the M1530 reviewed had a native resolution of 1440x900, whereas the SX1640 has 1980x1080. LaptopMag says that with settings maxed out and resolution set to maximum (native resolution), M1530 and SX1640 achieved 23fps and 24fps in FEAR respectively. So that means if the SX1640 is set to match M1530's resolution, then it should be able to achieve higher than 24fps. -
You will get alot of feedback from peeps here that have LG screens on there 1530's and enjoy it very much (including myself) .
A lot of peep's with the Samsung's had some grainy screen issues.
You can request Dell not send you a certain screen...but that would be up to Dell to honor your request.

Which driver is it, MadBoris?

With Forceware 179.48, my M1530 scored
Auto Detect Settings (1024 x 768)
Average FPS 92
Max Settings (native resolution 1280 x 800)
Average FPS 41
Too bad I cannot go beyond 1280 x 800
Is there still an issue with the Dell XPS 1530 screens being poor quality?
