Is this a coincedence or not, M1730 and a Cryo LX ?

Ive posted on the M1730 lounge recently that ive been having problems with the 2 USB ports on the right hand side of my M1730, they have generally stopped working and recognising anything thats connected to them, once in a blue moon they do actually work.

Now is this a coincedence or not ?

I have a Cryo LX laptop cooler, anyone that has one will know that they come with a USB to USB lead for the USB ports on the back of the Cryo LX and a USB power lead, wen ive used the Cryo LX for cooling which isn`t that often i have plugged the 2 USB leads into the 2 right hand side problematic USB ports on my laptop.

Today was one of the rare days when the USB ports were working on the right side of my M1730, i connected the Cryo LX`s USB leads into the right hand USB ports as they are more convenient due to the leads being fairly short, everything worked fine, i spent about an hour on my laptop with no problem. After i had finished i unplugged the Cryo LX from my right hand USB ports.

Not long ago i restarted my laptop, i decided i would put the USB dongle for my mouse into one of the right hand USB ports as i had been using it in the Cryo LX`s USB hub and didn`t need the Cryo LX fans to be on, i noticed straight away that the right hand ports where the Cryo LX had been connected too were not working again, they are not recognising anything.

Now i`d noticed this in the past but didn`t think much of it because the Cryo LX as far as i`m aware uses the USB ports for power and doesn`t put power back into them so i didn`t think anything of it, the times i have connected the Cryo LX to my 2 USB ports on the right they seem to stop working after.

Is this a coincedence or is the Cryo LX causing the USB ports on the right to not function properly, if so how would it do this as i thought it takes power from them and as far as i`m aware the Cryo LX is designed to work in 5V and thats what USB 2 gives out as far as i`m aware. Could it be trying to take more power which is affecting the USB ports, its strange that if i have the Cryo LX`s 2 USB connections connected to the rear USB port and the left hand side one then they function fine after.

This wholse USB thing is baffling me and its a bit frustrating really that they stop working then once in a blue moon they will come back to life again.

lol....we like puzzles, that's true, but we like our own time, too. BUT, most of us here love to help anyways, so what the hey!

Yeah, it could be that the power is the only part working, NOT the data. It could be the contacts themselves. Ever blown the dust out? I wouldn't know the safe way "chemically" to clean the metal contacts themselves, but someone here might. For right now, just use a dust blower and a Q-tip.

I don't think it should be killing the USB ports by taking too much power; usually, the device just stops to function. It's possible, though.

It may be wear/tear. What if you jiggle the device? Does it make it any better? Turn your sound up so you can heard those nice sounds. Also, if you left your Cyro LX in there too long, it may have actually made the spring connectors a bit loose, which are the things that keep devices "in" a USB port so they just don't fall out. Physically compare the inside with another, good one. Any differences?

Hi ikjadoon, thanks for the input.

The laptop is only 1 month old, i don`t think dust would be an issue, i had a Dell engineer replace the right hand side USB`s during the week and the same problem is happening with the new ones as previously.

Its as if the USB`s on the right won`t work after the Cryo LX has been plugged in, eventually after a few days they come back to life for a short while and will work again but its usually not for too long, its like they intermittently work.

The USB ports on the right are working at the min, i`m going to connect the Cryo LX again into the 2 right hand side USB ports for a while and see what happens after, i`ll post back if they stop working.

To say i`m baffled is an under statement lol

Oh, it's that new? Hmm....this is peculiar.

And this off/on alive/dead issue doesn't occur with the other ports? It may be that these are "hub" USBs, which aren't true, full USB ports, but are just like surge protectors: splitting the power. This may be the issue, but I don't see why the computer wouldn't be smart enough to just shut down the device instead of letting it damage the USB ports. That's what my desktop did to my USB PCI card: things just stopped working.

It looks like the Cyro LX may have power issues, after all.

    Right....

I just connected the Cryo LX to my 2 right hand USB ports, the Cryo LX comes with 2 USB leads and the instructions on the Cryo LX say you need both connected. One is a USB-Power lead and the other is a USB to USB lead which powers the 4 port USB hub on the rear of the Cryo LX.

Guess what ...... Neither of my right hand USB ports are working now after the Cryo LX had been connected, they were working before. All USB ports on the M1730 are USB 2.0 and as far as i`m aware they all give out the same power which is 5 volts which is what the Cryo LX is designed to run on.

They will stay like this for a fair while maybe a day or 2 before they will spring back to life again, this has been the pattern in the past.

I never had any of these issues with my Cryo LX (as we discussed before) on the M1730 (before I went to externally powering the Cryo).

I would suggest as a test powering the Cryo externally with a 5V 500mA supply and just connect the Hub cable to both right ports on the M1730 (when they're working again). If both ports work fine over a decent period of time then maybe there's some issue with your Cryo's USB power (maybe a short or something killing/crashing your USB ports) /shrug.
