Hey guys, I was just wondering if itll be worth it to upgrade my M1730s GPU to a 9800M GTX SLI or would i be better off selling it and getting a new laptop?

I think itll cost me around 500 to upgrade the GPU.

    Current Specs:
    -2x 320 GB Hdds
    -4 gigs of ram
-Upgraded to Intel Core 2 Extreme x9000
-8700M GT SLI 512M video card

It's a personal preference... I'd estimate the laptop as you have it now is worth about $750. If you can find a laptop you would like more than the upgraded laptop for less than $1250, then you should sell the M1730 and get that. Otherwise, you should do the upgrade.

Yeah leaning towards selling it but that might take a while. The main reason being me wanting a smaller laptop so i can take to school as backup in case my m11 fails on me. I still want it to be able to play most games though.

Buying a new one is better and I'm also going to sell my m1730.In 900$-1000$ you can find many HP Dv Series laptops with i5/i7 and HD 6770m.My laptop is really crap.
Intel Core 2 Duo [email protected]
    2GB DDR2
    160 GB HDD
    8700m GT SLI
I can't understand why the prices of m1730 upgrades are not going down? I'm also afraid of GPU failure and that's why I'm going to buy a Acer Aspire 5755G with i5 and GT 540m, by selling m1730.Can you tell me how old is your 8700m ?

I dont really know how old is 8700m as i bought the whole laptop refurbished. It was been over a year since i bought it though.

I know what you mean about the prices. I was looking to at least upgrade the ram but prices are insanely high, dont really remember prices being that high for DDR2 memory.

I'm kind of stuck at the moment, thinking of selling the 8700m sli and using the money to upgrade to the 9800m gtx sli. Dont know what are the odds of that happening though, dont see many people wanting an 8700m lol.

What is the highest Core 2 Duo CPU which I can add to m1730? I'm talking about Core 2 Duo and not Core 2 Extream.I'll have to upgrade everything and so buying a new one is better for me.Also, i3/i5/i7 processors are way better than old Core 2 Series and new DriectX 11 GPUs are also better as well.Well, I want to know if the Core 2 Duo T9600/9800/9900 processors work with m1730 or not?

I remember I almost bought the T9500 until I found the x9000 for a good deal. Yeah upgrading everything would be like buying a whole new laptop in your case. I think all I need is the graphics card but itvstill goes for 400-500 bucks!

I know the t990 fits the m1730 but runs at 1066 MHz. I dont think its recommended to force it to run at 800MHz. So maybe the best option is the t9500.

this past april I did the following to my M1730:

    New parts:
    x9000
    8gb ram
    64gb SSD
    internal bluetooth card
arctic silver 5 on ALL heatinks

    Ubuntu 12.04 64bit + VirtualBox win7 overlay

this runs EVERYTHING I need to WAY faster than it did before with just native win7.

granted I'm not a gamer, so all I did was bake my 8700m GT SLI in the oven to "fix" it... I couldn't get behind spending almost a grand to get the 9800, and I'd lose my TV out which I use quite a bit, and I love having a portable machine that can output the following:

composite, s-video, component, vga, dvi, hdmi and displayport with nothing more than cheap adapters...

and 1920x1200 resolution on the built-in displlay? try and find that in ANYTHING new that's not apple. I don't want to lose 120 lines of resolution, especially when I spend lots of time staring at code for a living, and when watching a 1080p movie on my laptop, the control panel doesn't have to keep hiding to display everything. 16:10 > 16:9

and it's got USB ports on both sides AND the back!

8700M's to 9800M's is going to perform like a single Geforce 650M (with all the issues that can come with SLI).

I'd say it's not worth $500. I would sell the laptop on eBay and buy a Lenovo Y580 (which is about $1200 loaded) or if you feel like plunking down a wad of cash an Alienware m17x.

Upgrade prices for old hardware don't go down because no one is making the parts anymore.

No, it's not worth it. Unless you can get the GPUs for under 300, that is.
