Bump...would like to get a reliable fix to this problem.
-
I haven't had this problem. And, whatever is going on, it doesn't sound good, and sound's like it's a pain in the arse.
Since this has been continual for you, I think maybe you should contact Dell and have them send a technician to fix/repair. Do you have Onsite service with your warranty?

P.S. Cool Avy! -
Yeah it's really temperamental...I'm getting some techies at my dad's work to look over it and see what they can do.
-
Oh good! Hopefully, it can be fixed up for yah!
Well, for me after one year of ownership...I finally gave in and did a Clean Install, as the system was doing some fairly *querky* things.
Now, its running like it was brand new again!
Aaah it's lovely how computers age!

Hey Flicker,
Could you please let me know what "2GB ReadyBoost" means in "2GB SDRAM+ 2GB ReadyBoost" in the description of your notebook ? -
I enabled Windows Readyboost on a 2GB USB Flashdrive I had laying around. It doesn't do much, but every little bit helps. You can do the same if you're interested in speeding up your laptop a bit and RAM isn't an option. Simply right-click on your USB drive in Computer, click enable Readyboost and allocate the drive's memory to Readyboost. Usually you should try to aim for a 2:1 (or more) ratio between the USB GB and the GB of your installed RAM.
Cheers,
Flicker. -
Thanks for the info flicker.
Sorry this is off topic but answers to following queries could help others also.
1)Is it helping you in some way ?
2)Are you seeing some change in speed of your laptop ?
3)Could more than 2 GB pen drive be used ?If so,how much maximum ?
4)Is there any other way to increase memory other than adding RAM ?
5)One thing more. You wrote some where in the thread that you are using the card slot. Are you using a 2 GB card.If so which one ?
Thanks,
H.S.Brar -
It's not noticable with small pendrives (1gb, 2gb), but it may be helpful at 4, 8, or 16. I just saw 8gb for $10 recently, you should try it.
That's the same as #1
Yeah, I don't think there's a size limit at all.
You could buy a SSD - it would be just as fast as using flash memory on a pen drive (so don't buy a pendrive just for readyboost if you get a SSD).
Sorry if any information is incorrect, that's all just from experience with them and the few articles I've read. -
Hi,
SSD ? You mean RAM ? -
Solid State Drive, a hard drive without moving parts
-
hi, the only problem i've had with my XPS is with medal of honor.... the first 2 weeks i had it, when i played online it gave me about 200 FPS average... but now it's just giving me like 70 FPS average....
i haven't installed anything that could possibly screw that up... the only thing i think it may be causing it is that i installed the last drivers from Nvidia site..: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista_179.48_beta.html
now, could that be it? and if so.... what drivers do you recommend me?
please help !
thank you very much ! -
I see.
So is the SSD drive faster than the original Hard drive ?
Is the cost same of SSD and HD ?
Is the SSD inserted at the same place as existing HD ?
How can existing HD be upgraded to SSD ?Where to put the HD then ?
Thanks -
does anybody know a solution to my problem? i'd be very grateful =)

ok sharky, your computer could be overheating, its a common problem in the xps m1530, ive had that problem myself, the Graphics card downclocks to protect itself, you could try these things:
1- clean out the fan with a compressed air can
2- measure your temperatures with HWMonitor: http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php
if your GPU is reaching temps higher than 85C while gaming then it IS overheating and you should call dell, and tell them your system is overheating and suffering performance loss, they should agree to replace your motherboard and Heatsink
rigth now SSD are horribly pricey, and they dont have much capacity, biggest ones are 200GB, they are *faster* when it comes to large files, but hesitate when it comes to smaller files (such as moving your photo album from one folder to the other)
they are *faster* but i would prefer 5 times the original 7200RPMs witch are fast by themselves and are available at over 500GB
and it goes on the same place where your HD is, you would have to choose one or the other
Cheers! -
i downloaded the program and while playing the temperatures goes between 78 and 82°..... i really think its a lot.... should i call dell ?
-
Hi, I've had Dell XPS M1530 for a week now. 3GB RAM, @GH Core 2 Duo, GeForce 8600GT. I'd be completely satisfied if not one thing.
When it's on battery it just shut off while playing games like Chess Titans(system Vista game!) and Scrapland. Games don't slow down or have lower FPS, they just turn off. It works proper on AC, and when I don't play it works proper on battery too.
Sometimes I can play for 20 minutes, sometimes I just turn on the game and it shut off. Screen become white for a second, then it just go off. Tried to switch off the Powermizer, remove and put battery again or change settings of battery- nothing helped. Temperatures are fine.
Any ideas what it can be?
When connected to AC it works well.
I'm from Poland so sorry for mistakes, try to answer in simple words, please. -
weird, GPU only downclocks when it reaches temps much higher than that,
- are you running on battery? your GPU downclocks automatically when you are on battery to save battery time.
- are you running some background program that could be limiting your fps?
- do you have v-sync on? vsync limits the FPS to match your screen refreshrate.
- if none of these apply then you should call dell and tell them you are suffering performance decrease while gaming.
best of luck! -
Have the same problem. Disabling Powermizer didn't helped. It run smooth on Ac(games too) and when I use Microsoft Word or Windows media player on battery it also run properly. Is it possible that GPU on battery doesn't work properly or can't do 3D? It shuts off even when I play Chess Titans(Vista system game!) But when i play, for exapmle Mahjong on baterry it run perfect...

i never discussed this matter before.

My 1530 eventually died. I think it lasted as long as it did because I always ran it with a laptop cooler but eventually heat got the better of it. Dell was really awesome handling it though.
-
I would like to have your opinion on the following issues with my 2 weeks old xps 1530:
a) There is a small periodic "kirk" noise comming from my xps. What could it be?
When I am playing some videos it is hardly noticable however, while working on a document it does become a bit annoying. I have noticed that the laptops from IBM are almost quite.
Could it be my hard disk? Compared to this my external 2.5 inch hdd is almost quite. Should I contact support on this?
b) The spacebar and the mouse buttons are a bit flimsy. It is normal?
c) The joints on the side (see pic) above the ports are a bit loose. Is is usual?

d) How robust is the keyboard, would it be fine if i use is for playing games like need for speed. -
hi, i have my dell xps 1530 refrub for about a year n it sudden shut down yesterday night. when i try to start it up, same thing happen after 5 mins. I got an external cooler so it shouldn't be any heating problems and i been on power options save, lowest bright / performance. After the 5th and 6th time it does not even go to the OS and shuts down immediately upon start up so I believe it is my mother board or processor. This morning when i start it up again, it stay on but never went to the OS and crash mid-way. when i try to reboot it, it would go to the loading cd however it will never go to the blue loading screen. when i try to go to the bios it will crash right after it loads up first dell screen.
-
I had that problem with a refurb I bought, kenny...never did figure out what it was though. I raised hell with dell customer service and eventually they replaced it.
-
WEll, i called technical support, lucky my warranty is not over. they said they will have to replace the motherboard and i will have to send it. which is the worst possible time since finals are comming up. -.-!!!!!!! Hope they fix it but if anyone find the problem out please post so future xpser's will know what to do.
-
Did they erase your HDD?
-
I've been having issues with mine of late. On Monday, I called Dell asking about a thermal paste replacement, as the machine had been running very hot. They said as long as I followed the guide on their website, and didn't cause any intentional damage, the warranty wouldn't be a problem. I did this that afternoon, booted back up and was happy with the temps I was getting. I checked again this morning, and my temps are back up again (but not by too much). This is what I'm getting.
Idle:
CPU: Hovers between 50 and 60*C
GPU: 60 - 65*C
Under Load (I fired up WoW):
CPU: 75-80*C
GPU: 80 - 85*C
Way too hot IMO. So, I called them up again just now, and they are sending a technician out to change the Heatsink and the motherboard. Hopefully this will fix the problem. They wouldn't need to reinstall the OS would they? I'll be backing up my data obviously, but I'd prefer if they didn't have to reinstall my OS. -
I have an XPS m1530. Its motherboard and heatsink were replaced 2 times in less than a year because the temperatures rise over 100C (i could boil water with the laptop) in less than 10 mins when playing games and it basically shuts down. I expect the problem will reappear in a few months, and Dell will change the motherboard again. I guess its a chronic issue with those laptops due to 8600M GT chips.
-
yeah the Nvidia 8400 and 8600 mobile cards are faulty.
-
If figure I'll give it a go once, and if it happens again I'll demand they replace it with something else (i.e. Latitude E6500).
-
I too will be requesting a new MOBO because of my 8600. I have been playing with the Nvidia driver settings and noticed something interesting though that may be of use. While playing Burnout Paradise I ran the game with custom settings and got temps in the 90's, I changed to global settings and put it on performance and my temps broke the 100 mark, I then switched to the balanced settings and have not exceeded 90 while playing.
-
Are you sure about asking for an E6500? I don't know a lot about the Quadro NVS 160M but it doesnt seem as capable as the 8600M GT. I dont know if you have a Blu-Ray burner or not but if you dont care about that try to get a Studio XPS 16. If you want the burner look at the Studio 15. You can actually get a slight CPU upgrade with that.
-
Well I don't play anything besides Counter Strike Source and WoW, so it isn't really an issue. My Dad has that particular machine, and it's very very nice. We'll see how the motherboard change goes first though, if it fixes it, sweet, if not I'll ask them to give me something else. The tech called me this morning, and he's coming out tommorow afternoon. I must praise Dell for their service, it's been A1.
