Congrats, u ll be very happy with it but I cant quit thinking that if u go with other high performance companies u ll get at least 50% more power for the same price. Might wanna check Sager laptops.

You could have gotten the Precision for a better build quality, more powerful and cheaper, ya know?
With $2700 I could get a much much more powerful laptop than that one.
XPS 1730 IMO is plainly crap, if compared to a high-end 17''.

Just ordered mine on the 8th last Monday and I'm stoked!! Still in preproduction to this day with an estimated 9/30/2008 shipping date. Just recently found out the reason its still in preproduction is that the SSD drive is on backorder. Wish it could at least show that on the website when you order.

Ok, my honest opinion, I think you jumped the gun on this purchase, and could have potentially saved a lot of money if you had been a little more patient and did your research. :)
It's your money, and not my business what you do with it, but as others have pointed out, you could have gotten a machine more appropriate to your needs for a lot less.
Just my personal opinion, I'd cancel your order, and start from scratch. Post a thread with faq filled out in the What Notebook Should I Buy? subforum, and see what others suggest. :)
    That's my advice.

talin: I purchased my laptop through my employee purchase program and I saved about 2,000 including taxes. price it out on dell's regular consumer website with the same specs and it will be about 5,800$ with shipping and tax. I got mine for about 3,559$. I'm pretty happy with my purchase since I really wanted that 8800m gtx SLI and the X9000. I did realize that the X9100 and 9800m GTX should be coming out soon for Dell since Sager already has it. But I really needed a decent upgrade before I go away next month since I usually buy a top-of-the-line notebook every 4-5 years. thanks for your input though.

$5800 is pretty rediculous for that, but what do I know? If you're happy with your purchase, that's all that matters. :)
I was only giving my opinion, that I would have done more research. I think for your needs from what you stated, that system is really overkill. But that's me. If it makes you happy, then great! :)

heheh thanks talin.. usualy the notebooks I purchase every 4-5 years are indeed overkill, but I need it for my HD gaming and GIS development for work with the addition to last that long of a time but with these new SSD drives it should help. PS..that option really made the price jump ridulcously, I dont know why I fell for it heheh.

Has anyone here had good experience yet with the 128GB SSD for the M1730? I haven't seen too many people talk about it since it just was released in July I believe.

I have to agree with some of the other posters on the price of the 1730. Dell has a sale going on for 2 days and I priced one at $2198 shipped with the the8700SLI/T8300/4GB/200GB. It would be another $700 for the 8800SLI which still makes it around $2900.

With my EPP I priced it with the same specs above at $1973 shipped. Again another $700 for the 8800SLI which would make it around $2700.

    Plainly crap?? Sorry?

Its pretty much the best gaming laptop you can get with 100% mobile components if you prefer to stick with the main boys. Excellent cooling system and expandability.

Please substantiate your claims of Plainly Crap. He got a bad price, but don't say the system is junk.

and Honestly for my needs the XPS M1730 is more than enough for me. And about the pricing i didn't know about the XPS Sale until after i ordered. and i know this computer isn't crap. The main attraction was the specs and the Light FX which YOU DO NOT GET WITH A PRECISION Workstation

Heh well, lets be clear about one thing, while it is pretty cool at first, you sooner or later will PROBABLY grow tired of it and have everything turned off (except the keyboard backlight.)

    It came to $2026 shipped.

I already returned the Studio 17 ($960) so Im hoping that I like this one better.

    Nothing special pretty standard.
