I bough an Alienware m5750 (17" lappy) last December and I liked it so much it replaced my desktop. So I lost my portable "entertainment toy" to desktop duty. The m1710 looks like a really nice unit to become my new portable replacement, so I bought a like new one last night. Here's the configuration. I plan on getting a Logitech VX Nano for a mouse to go with it (Ihave one with the m5750 and I love it). I've never used Vista but I've heard its a memory hog - should I upgrade my memory or will 2GB be useable?

you say that you lost your portable duty, yet, in the text at the bottom you have an absolutly massive list of laptops, why couldent you just use one of them.. i dont get it.
and 2 GB should be fine -
I've given the T61 (15") to my son and the R60 (14") is going to the other son. Once you get used to a 17" screen its hard to go back! The T21 is getting a little long in the tooth performance wise with its PIII 700 mhz processor. The 10 year old 760EL uses a 100 mhz processor and Windows 98 - it does still run pretty good though.
-
Oh right, i understand now then haha
2 GB should be fine, but you should be able to install Windows XP if you want to, the M1710s used to come with XP on as standard, also check that the heatsink vents either side are clean, sometimes they are dusty on second hand laptops. -
the 1710 is a good choice, heavy and low battery life for something you carry around, but that's the price you pay to have a 17" gaming beast. i love my m1710 but i have had problems with overheating that dell is unable to fix so they are sending me a m1730. in most cases they are bullet proof though.
-
yeah, clean the vents constantly, otherwise you will go through gpu's. i take apart my machine about once a month, but it is overkill. every 3 to 5 months should suffice depending on where it is used
-
Hey, thanks for the cooling advice. I think my m1710 has been pretty lightly used as it has the plastic protective film still on the cover. Are you using compressed "instrument" air to clean it or just wiping off the fins and such?
-
i use compressed air and a vacuum, sometimes a tooth brush for the fins
-
The best way to clean it is to take it apart, it is very easy to do, and clean the fans and the fins. If you're using compressed air make sure to prevent the fans spinning too fast.
-
Are you low on money ? My xps m1530 is twice better than that exept the 17" screen . -
100Mhz is twice of 2.0Ghz for you? 3GB is twice of 2GB? 220GB is twice of 120GB?
You have a serious math problem. -
Congrat's on your purchase! The 1710, isn't too bad!
You have a lot of computers in your *family* LOL!
(That's never a bad thing)
