I just literally received my dell m1530. I have read from several threads of what people are doing at the start to get the best out of the laptop. I was wondering if any of you guys could help me setting it up? I mean, what should I do to it at the beginning - uninstall stuff? reformat? put in drivers? Any guidelines would be much appreciated. I am a novice when it comes to notebooks because this is my first.

Please help because I don't want to start using it only to end up having to reformat it because off silly bloatwares, etc.

Formatting and reinstalling Windows is the best way to get maximum out of your system. If you want to keep Media Direct, then first boot with MD DVD and partition the disk. Create C drive with the size you want (can make additional partitions after installing windows).

Then boot from Vista (or XP) disk and follow on screen instructions. After installing the OS, use the provided driver disk (or visit support.dell.com) to install drivers.

If you need more help, post here.

You know, I just got my 1530 and was convinced I HAD to do all sorts of things including a clean install as soon as I rec'd it..but you know what? Its just fine the way it is. After turning it on and seeing for myself, I find it more than great the way it is...Very little bloat, no hassles with dealing with driver installs, nothing..why not just enjoy it..update drivers as you find issues, if it aint broke don't 'fix' it...

Ooooh -- I LIKE that answer! Mine is supposed to arrive today, and I admit I've gotten a little scared reading some of these threads and the complicated (at least to me) instructions for getting it up and running. Talk of bloatware and partitions and reinstalls has had me a bit nervous.

I'm also scheduled to receive my 1530 today. From what i have read on here is that its always best to re-install the OS for maximum performance. I know there is a thread that shows step by step how to do this. I cant seem to find it. If any could post it it would be awsome.

Is this the thread you mean? Thanks go to Flamenko for that thread - I plan to do this also when I open my M1330 on Christmas day :)

It should be quite easy (touch wood) but if anything goes wrong just start again :)
