I am furious! I just got this $1500 laptop delivered and after taking it out the box and turning it on 30 minutes later I notice a black horizontal line all the way across the screen i thought it was a graphical glitch until i minimized all the windows and realized it was a line of dead pixels. I upgraded to the full HD screen and this is what I get? How ridiculous.
I hooked up the laptop to my hdtv to see if it may have been a video card glitch but it appeared normal on my tv. I will try uninstalling the video drivers and installing them again to see but I don't have my hopes up!
I can't believe it! LITERALLY 30 minutes after using it!

Okay yeah if you have lines on the internal LCD but externally you don't, then you have a defective LCD panel. If it's new you can return and reorder but that can take a couple weeks. Do you have on-site repair? They can dispatch a technician to your home and replace the LCD if you have on-site.

When I ordered my XPS 17 about a week ago the in-home repair service came standard for one year. You probably have it.

Sometimes when you order XPS laptops, people opt out of the on-site to save ~50 dollars. Only real way to tell is going to support.dell.com and punching in your service tag and looking at your warranty.

If it's an entire line of pixels, I doubt the pixels themselves are dead. There's probably something wrong with the signal not reaching that line in the panel. If you feel up to it, you could try taking it apart and re-seating the monitor cable. If that doesn't help, then there's something defective in the monitor cable or the panel itself, and needs replacement.

I just spent an hour on the phone with customer services. They said that I didn't buy the premium service plan with in home service normally you would have to ship it back to them and wait 2 weeks for them to fix it but because i just literally got the laptop this morning they are going to make a one time exception and send someone over to my house to replace the screen within the next few days they will call and make an appointment then.

But now i just realised that I didnt clarify with the guy on the phone that the replacement part will be the full HD screen I really hope they dont replace it with the basic standard 900p screen :/

Don't ship it back for them to fix it, ship it back to return it (Get an RMA) and take advantage of this opportunity to either re-order and change something in your config / get the onsite warranty, or get a different laptop such as the HP DV7t Quad Edition.

Or you could return and get an XPS 15 with the B+RGLED screen.

Something tells me that an improperly seated display cable wouldn't be the cause of a single row of pixels going out. There are 1080 rows of pixels, but only 40 pins in the LVDS cable. If it even worked that way (which it doesn't) you'd have 27 rows of dead pixels :D

They should send you an email with the part order and you can make sure it's the 1080p screen.

You know what your probably right. I really don't think it was worth the money. I'm not impressed by it at all and the mouse pad is annoying and sometimes unresponsive when you scroll down a page. The only thing I like is the sound quality but then you have to make sure you dont block the 2 speakers that are where you place your wrists when typing.

I missed out on a few customizations too like the blu ray drive, the custom design lid and the light up keyboard, some reason I didn't see them as options on the package i picked, you have to pick the cheapest one and then all the upgrades are available. I picked the most expensive minus the 3d screen and had much less options to customize.

    What's Dells return policy like?

Oh and another horizontal line has now appeared below the 1st one, i wonder how many more will show up before the guy comes to fix it lol

Exact same problem. 702x was delivered one week ago. Yesterday, just after completing Windows Easy Transfer from old laptop and rebooting, horizontal line of pixels appeared near the top of the panel. They are a different colour and vary with the background, as if they are offset from elsewhere on the screen. Tried different resolutions, installed latest nVidia drivers, etc. but no luck. When hooked up to an external LCD, no distortions so it's definitely an issue with the panel. Heading overseas for 3 weeks so can't get it fixed now.

    2720QM, GT555M, 8 GB RAM, 1080p screen, etc.

The man from dell came today and fixed the screen he said it was a problem with the lcd panel and the connection cables and that he changed both. He literally took the laptop to pieces I didn't expect that would have been necessary to change the screen. It works fine now and there's no problems. The screen actually looks better than it did before, besides the horizontal lines (it had gotten up to 7 lines by the time he came to fix it) the colours look warmer, before they were a little on the blue side and also the matte screen anti glare seems less excessive, it doesn't look as grainy as before, on a white screen it appeared dusty/dirty/grainy but now not much if at all. It may have not been a dell lcd panel that he put into it as wouldnt it have been the same?

Dell uses different kinds of 900p panels in their notebooks. The maximu brightness, contrast, and color temperature varies a lot between cheap panels.
