I recently ordered a Dell XPS m1530 on the dell website and it really looks like a good pc, but I'm very worried about the Centrino 2 CPUs and 9600GTs being available with other companies. If dell gets these soon it's going to suck for me because I just bought mine. I'm very, very tempted to cancel my order and just get an hp pavilion dv5 because of the 9600M GT 512mb option. I really hate the hp dv5 and the way it looks but I don't know what to do. Should I cancel my dell order and wait for dell to release the Centrino 2 / 9600M GT configuration, OR bite the bullet and buy the hp dv5, OR stick with what I have? I use my computer mostly for gaming, programming, internet use, and some light video editing, but gaming is the only thing that will "need" such high specs, and I'm looking forward to playing the upcoming gtaIV pc version on this computer. Also I'm going back to college toward the end of september and the one I ordered is already cutting it close (Est. Ship Date: 9/17/2008). So, I would like to know what you think I should do. Also, does anyone know when dell will refresh their XPS notebooks? Are we talking days or weeks or months?
Here's the dell I ordered 2 days ago:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.1GHz/800MHzFSB, 3M L2 Cache)
4GB DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ TrueLife LED LCD (1440x900)
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-card
Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)
Dell Bluetooth Travel mouse
8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion P Primary Battery
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium Edition
I got this for $1122 before tax using the 30% off coupon
Thanks for reading.![]()

The XPS M1530 is a nice machine, in every sense... and the 8600M GT isn't bad either as is the core 2 duo.. but if u want to wait, you can wait a bit, because I have read *unconfirmed / unofficial* reports of a revamp possibly with the new processors from Dell around september / october..
But in the end, its you choice I guess.. but if I were you I would get this machine (may be would think about increasing the processor one notch higher, if its within the budget)... and use this for a year or two and then get the latest available at that time, which I guess would be lots of new processors n cards and what not... Anyways... your callThink about it.

i think you should stick with it

shoubr... It's always a waiting game, you could cancel and wait a month or 2 before dell revamps, and by than find out that if you just wait another month the computer youve been waiting for all your life will be released, and than if you wait just a few months more, they will release a even better ultimate version of that computer, than after all that waiting you finally order, whew long wait but it was worth it. but... than you find out that computer is junk horrible revies it;s falling apart, but thats ok, if you just wait a few more months...

Congrat's on your 1530 order
If you you cancel, peruse other brands, and decide to stick with the 1530..You start all over, and the wait will be longer for the build/arrival..
Technology..it changes all the time. It's what fits *your wants and needs* that matters the most. Also, there is lots of talk regarding the *refreshes*
You already placed the order, so to me..it seems you do want the 1530
Good luck to you! Let us know what you decided to do!

you should stick with it imo

I've had the same worries as you for the past few weeks, and finally decided to go ahead with the M1530 last night.
I dislike HP's looks so I decided not to get it. I just figured that I would get sick of looking at that notebook after a while.
And regarding the Centrino 2 upgrade, there isn't much difference between the two chipsets, so you shouldn't wait for that. In addition, you won't have the sweet deals you can find on the current line, so for the same price, you'll get much much much less in terms of components.
So I definitely think you should stick with it. -
You know I heard Dell isn't refreshing the XPS line, it is merging it with the Inspiron and the Studio... So if you want a true XPS now would be the time. IMO the XPS is pretty much the sharpest looking notebook out, even more so than the Apple MBP.

I was holding out for a dell refresh... but dell took too long. I got a 7811 from gateway.

You're worried about the 9600? Don't be! It's technology, as soon as you get it, there's another one 10 times better than yours that comes out the next week.

Hey srry about that triple post, Dont sure if it was comp, wifi, or nbr given me problems.
-
I concur, just stick with what you've got and don't hold regrets. New technology will always be better, but what you have is more than good enough.
-
i really dont think you should get the hp, the touchpad is horris, its big and bulky. its not worth it.
i returned my laptop and will wait for centrino 2. as i dont need it now and i want 800mhz ram, and the new gpu.
dell cant be too long now, so i think should should wait if you dont need it right away. -
If it is true about them just having high performance versions of the Inspiron and Studio and dropping the current XPS line, I would rather have the current XPS than the small improvements of Centrino 2 in a Inspiron or Studio chassis. Unless of course they redesign the chassis of either or both of those to be as nice as the current XPS.
-
And shoubrastreet74, the thing is that if you get your notebook, and something new comes out, or meanwhile you decide to buy another brand, then you have 21 days (from what I understand from the day you receive it,) to return it to Dell. So I'd just stick with what you have and if you change your mind you can always (well at least until October, judging from your shipping date,) return it.

So a decision would have to be made sooner than the latter!

So, no sad... -
Ah okay, thought invoicing was as soon as order gets placed. All is well
.
-
And, remember the ESD is expanded out..so you there's a chance you could get it sooner than the ESD.
Cin -
yeah if you like the look of this laptop you might as well get it.
Studio XPS will look more like Studio, which is nothing special at the moment.
Inspiron XPS will look more like Inspiron, which sort of looks bloated-cheap to me.
The current XPS is the nicest looking laptop so you might as well get it while it still exists. -
-
If you can, wait for centrino 2, at least a 10% increase in performance and the prices will be the same. Dell already has it in some of their business notebooks so it shouldn't be too much longer. That's when i'll be getting my machine.
xps m1530
2.8ghz 1066mhz fsb t9600 core 2 duo
4gb ddr3 800mhz
nvidia 9600m gt 512mb
windows vista ultimate 64bit -
Thanks for all the advice everyone.
I've decided to stick with my m1530 order for now. I figure the differences in gpu are not that huge so it's not like one will run something that the other will not. I'm happy with the configuration I ordered, and I'll probably keep it unless I see a change on the dell site with a similar price tag. Thanks again for helping me make up my mind. Now all I gotta do is wait about 3 more weeks. -
Just remember, you could get it sooner than the ESD
I really think once you receive it..you will be pleased with your choice!
Cin -
dude 8600GT IS AMAZING.
-
I would have ordered an xps already if it wasn't for the 8600m. I had an 1520 with it, it wasn't a bad card but you'd think in a year they would atleast have the refresh out with higher cores and cooler temps in it. All up to you though
laptop only get cheaper as time goes on

Well, you might as well get one because you'll have in your possession an extinct masterpiece. The XPS line had a successful year I would think but it seems Dell wants to push Alienware as its gaming notebooks; too bad really, XPS are awesome. I'm glad I didn't return mine, it'd be hard to part with this thing.
Just ordered m1530, worried
