Well I just ordered the Studio XPS 16 from the DELL site. So before it arrives, I bought the Windows 7 Pro and Office 2010 from the Microsoft student site. Can somebody guide me how to properly install Windows without losing any of the functionality. What drivers will I need. I just want to clean install and get rid of any garbage Dell puts on my computer but make sure everything still works fine. Also, how do I create partitions.

    Thanks for any help! :)

Actually I'd keep the install, and even make the back up discs. I've found it to be easier and quicker if an issue arises. Dell actually doesn't bloat out the XPS 16's all that badly. A side from the data safe online backup, and dell chat I've actually used the other stuff. And by other stuff I mean the roxio creater, fast access, power dvd, webcam central.

If you do want to format cleanly at least make those backup discs first before killing that partition and ditching data safe local.!!!!!!!

As for drivers and installed software that you might want back, both of which can be downloaded off Dell's site. Go to the Dell software store to get the software back, and the dell driver support site for the drivers.

    Enjoy your system!

What would you recommend, then, for a laptop that can support light gaming without looking as gaming-specific as something like the G73?

Higher price than what?! Granted I bought mine back in April now, but at that time, it was impossible to get anything as powerful for as cheap as the XPS 16.

From what you've read on a complaints forum.

Don't judge it until you've tried it and found that unless you're pushing the system to the absolute max (modern gaming at max settings for hours on end) it won't do you wrong. But it's not designed to be an ultimate gamer, and that's where Alienware come in.

Plus it's hard to find a laptop built like this one. No creaks or wobbles. It looks awesome and feels awesome and that's why I love it. lol a G73 comment, those things are hideous plus I would never feel comfortable in public with an AW (and they're full of build quality issues, at least in the past). When I first picked up my SXPS 16 I couldn't believe how good it felt.

Totally agree - it is a great notebook and unless to push it to the max (which I rarely do) it really performs well.

There are many good laptops better than this.

To name few, Asus N61JQ/JN, Asus N53JQ/JN/JF, Asus U53JC, Sager NP5125, Sager NP8690, HP Envy 14/15, etc ...

    all comes approx ~1000-1200 USD.

I forgot to mention I'm Canadian, so that the Envy series are out of my budget. Plus they come with that ugly french keyboard... But any tips on reinstalling Windows?

I'm Canadian too, and because I happen to have a boxed copy of Win7 Ultimate I may go ahead and just do a clean install :D

If you want some basic tips on things to do before reinstalling Windows, I just made a list: Basic Windows Reinstall Tips

I figured I'd place it in a new thread so it's easily accessible... hope it helps!

I'm in Canada too and almost all the laptops listed up there aren't available or are well in the $2000 range. I still think this is such an aesthetically pleasing laptop, many of those laptops you listed are also just gray boxes. The only other line I really considered was the Envy but as someone said, $$$$$. So far I'm a happy customer but who knows what I'll say in a week.
