I just got in the Dell SXPS 1645 with RGBLED. The only reason I bought this thing was because I heard that the screen was so amazing and the best there was. Well, I'm looking at it right now and it doesn't seem so great to me. I mean it's ok, but my jaw didn't drop...at all. In fact, it was a big letdown.
My first reaction was, is this thing a matte screen? Because it doesn't seem as "glossy" as my old Vaio AR-590E. It seems a little grainy to me. But now that I think of it, Dell never advertised it as being glossy, I just assumed it would be.
-
It is def glossy.
To be honest, I was way more impressed with the LG 15.6" 1080p WLED screen.
The RGBLED is a Samsung and most, if not all, SEC displays have grain. I feel your pain and my next order is going to have the the LG -
Is this LG WLED screen on the Dell SXPS 16 or some other model?
-
They use it on the 1640/45 and the Studio 15. Maybe even the M15x, not sure.
-
Sleey0, you've seen both the LG WLED and the Samsung RBGLED on the Dell and you like the WLED better?
How come everyone was so crazy about this RBGLED? -
Yeah and I dunno.
I like the colors (even though they can be way oversaturated) on the RGBLED. I just think that for the price the 1080p WLED is the way to go. I almost didn't get rid of the Studio 1557 just because the screen was so darn nice! lol -
You're saying you like the colors on the Samsung RBGLED better? Ok I'm a little confused. If the LG WLED and the Samsung RGBLED were exactly the same price, which would you prefer? Besides price, what's better about the LG WLED?
-
I just don't like how the white's are with the RGBLED, and let's face it, almost everything is white (web pages, etc). It's almost hard to look at.
Right now I am typing this on an outlet 1640 that I got dirt cheap with an RGBLED display. On Friday, I am ordering a 1645 but going with the 1080p LCD. Money isn't a factor for me.
My preference is for the LG WLED, 100%. -
I love my RGBLED screen and all other laptop screens seem like such poor quality in comparison. I am unsure why you are not that impressed with it. I find the picture to be very clear. Just my 2 cents though
-
I prefer my 1080p WLED screen. Sure I'm missing .4 inches but I hate the over saturated colors especially the white on the RGBLED display with a passion.
-
The point behind the RGB LED type screen is to get the entire color gamut and not the 60% that you typically get on a notebook display. This would be of use to people using Photo Shop, Light Room, 3ds Max, etc. who also want/need portability. "Web pages, etc" as you say are designed for the lowest common denominator so you would not likely see enhancement and might see what one might call oversaturation. Not sure how white can be hard to look as this would only be an issue of brightness (an easy adjustment) and not saturation.
The best bet if you are purchasing any "higher end", and multimedia profesionals would not call this screen high end , but I would call it satisfactory for my personal photo editing, is to get a hardware calibrator to calibrate your screen. I believe then you would no longer have issues with its display of color or white. -
I just wanted to ask, is the LG 1080p WLED 15.6" always used for the 1080p 15.6" WLED option? I have a 1640 coming via System Exchange in its early stages (no exchange order yet), and want to know if I should call my rep and change my preference (I had asked specifically for the RGBLED, but I am mostly just browsing webpages/watching movies/pictures, no professional 3d/photo work)

i love the rgb led lcd. colors are extremely vibrant and bright. really happy with mine

It's hard to put my finger on it, but what bugs me about this RBGLED is that it looks "grainy" and not smooth.
I used to have a Vaio AR590E, 1920x1200 screen that was an X-Brite HiColor. That screen was marketed as "glossy" and it was absolutely gorgeous. Bright, beautiful colors, deep inky blacks. Then, I went and broke it and got a Sony Vaio FW490 with what I thought was the same techonology because it was marketed as X-Brite FullHD. I thought the difference betweeen "Hi-Color" and "FullHD" was that "FullHD" was 16:9 1080p whereas the "Hi-Color" was 16:10 1200p. I was wrong. When I got the FW, the screen looked at lot like this RBGLED in that it was grainy. I did some research and found out that Sony applies this "anti-reflective" coating to the "FullHD" screens that essentially makes them more matte than glossy whereas they didn't do that for the glossy "HiColor" screens. Anyway, after getting this Samsung RGBLED screen, I realize that Dell never advertised this screen as being "glossy", although I certainly expected it to be.
Nobody get me wrong. The RGBLED screen doesn't "suck" or anything and I'm sure people like it. But I was not impressed. -
Am I the only person who prefers a screen that isn't glossy?

I found the chicklet keyboard and touch media buttons of SXPS1640 are only 2 better things than Studio 1555, else Studio 1555 is the choice for budget sensitive consumers. -
Can anyone answer my question (post #12) re: the WLED 1080p panel always being the LG one?
-
Either LG or AUO, and some think the AUO is even better than the LG (I haven't seen the AUO yet so can't comment).
I guess either way you should be good.
I just placed my new and improved order for a 1645 w/1080p WLED -
Needs to be calibrated properly, as detailed in the HUGE thread about this very topic.
-
^ Agreed.
However, I don't feel like spending more money on a calibrator
For the $75 upgrade, the 1080p WLED is well worth it. -
I just wish they offered the WLED screen in 16".
-
.4" is not going to be noticeable, really.
-
The RGB LED screen is grainy??
I have not seen RGB LED in person but the 16 Samsung 1366 x 768 is crystal clear.
My previous LCD panel for my XPS M1530 was a grainy Samsung and I really hate it -
It's not grainy in the slightest. Not sure what was wrong with the screen in question but something must have. This is the most smooth looking screen I've ever seen.
-
I can vouch for that, my RBGLED is not grainy in the least.
-
A correctly working screen is NOT grainy that is totally untrue.
It would seem a lot of people are just trying to justify NOT spending the money for the best screen, thats fine. But saying it is not as good as the WLED is laughably incorrect. And it takes about 20 seconds to install one of the many ICC profiles here, effortless. -
I'd say the RGBLED is worth it if only for the viewing angles. As for grainy I believe it has a higher dot-pitch so that doesn't seem accurate. If you want, you could try using the profiles inside photoshop, and then just dial down the saturation for stuff outside like watching blu-rays (because it is oversaturated for non color managed apps). Eventually though the windows desktop is supposed to be fully color managed by microsoft so the RGBLED is a good way of "future proofing".
-
i love this screen, but my only problem is when im surfing the net the pictures are blurry any suggestions why is this the ratio of the page is set at 115%! help
-
my screen is top notch, no grainyness.. although it is using a calibrated color profile as well. I have not seen any other screens that come close to comparing to this one..so yeah I like it a lot =) haven't seen the 15.6 WLED 1080 though
Just received SXPS 16 - Works fine but not impressed with the RGBLED
