I just received the following message on my XPS 1640:

" IDT pc audio stopped working and was closed."

Problem caused by Sigmatel C-Major audio driver

This problem was caused by Sigmatel C-Major audio driver, which was created by Integrated Device Technology, Inc. and is distributed by your computer manufacturer.

    Solution

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To solve this problem, go online to your computer manufacturer's website and search for Sigmatel C-Major audio driver updates.

But the thing is, I went to Dell and looked at the driver updates for the XPS 1640, and there's no updates for any C-Major Sigmatel audio driver. Has anyone else gotten this message? If so, what did you do to fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dell's Drivers page only has drivers for IDT. Try installing that (the newest one was released a couple of days ago).

Did you start getting this message after you updated your sound drivers or before?

There is a known issue that the sound does not work (till you reactivate it) after it comes out of sleep. You can tell by the red X next to the speaker icon.

That is probably not your problem though.

Well, to be honest, I hadn't updated ANY drivers. I know I should. But I'm your typical user that gets the computer out of the box & uses it just the way it is until an issue arises & I find out I have to update a driver. The only things I really stay up to date with is the Windows updates.

So at this point, I still haven't updated any drivers. I was almost afraid to because the message I got was to update the Sigmatel C-Major driver, but from what I could tell, my system wasn't even compatible with that.

As for my sound not working...
Even AFTER I received that message, I never saw a red 'X' on my speaker icon. In fact, my sound still seemed to work fine. I can't be totally sure...maybe the sound quality wasn't as good or something. I don't really know because I don't really use my system for things like music or anything where the sound has to be CD quality or anything...so I never really paid attention to the sound quality BEFORE I got the message.
