The keyboard, touchpad, and media buttons on my m1330 are completely gone. Also, the battery isn't even recognized, so if you pull the power out, it immediately shuts off, just like if you pulled the power plug out of a desktop computer.

What do you think is broken? Is it the motherboard?

I phoned Dell, but the warranty is expired, so they said it was going to be $400 to fix it. I looked for m1330 motherboards on eBay though, and they're going for ~$120. What should I do?

How did the computer come into such a state?
Did you dismantle it and put it back together, or did the computer just appear to be this way by itself?

it depends if you are comfortable installing the motherboard yourself, and if it even is the motherboard?

$400 is alot of money to fix the keyboard.

You can find keyboards, etc.. like you did for much cheaper ~ at places such as EBay. How comfy are you replacing a keyboard, and such. on your own?

You can even check out the Outlet for remanufactured keyboards, etc. That would make your purchase a bit cheaper.

There are guides you can download direct from Dell's site for instructions on replacing the keyboard, etc.

Is there somewhere local, you trust ~ to take your lappy & have it diagnosed, as to what the exact problem is?

It's too bad this happened to you, and after your warranty had expired.. :(

Maybe you should cut your losses and put that $400 towards the purchase of a new notebook.

That is a great idea! :D

I was thinking if he is out of warranty, his lappy has to be at least a year old.

And, purchasing from Dell's Outlet is another option for more savings...There are some coupons out now! :D
