The laptop is just over a month old. A couple of weeks back, I found that the key "I" was not working. But after some time (say 5 minutes) it again started working so I did not pay much heed to it.

Today, when I tried to put my password to log in, the key "K" was not working. So I was unable to put my password. Thank God that I had my fingerprint enrolled, so I logged in using the finger print. But immediately tried to use the keys and foung that keys "K" and "I" are not working.

But after 5 minutes they started to work. So what should I do now. Call up Dell? Or is there something I can try before that? It seems that after the laptop gets a bit hot, the keys start to work!!!??? I do not want to send the laptop for repair or want a technician to open it up. I have heard a lot in these forums that the technicians in India are no good.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks!!

It's still under warranty, so just send it back and ask for a new one =)

No reason at all for you to compromise on something that you pay good money for.

Does this happen each and every time you boot up the laptop? What if you boot your laptop into "safe mode", will you continue to see the keys from the keyboard not function?

You can also run the keyboard diagnostic test from F12 (built-in diagnostic program) via the CUSTOM test to see if your keyboard is malfunctioning. Try that and let us know if you find anything.

I dont want a refurb :( Also a have loaded xp and many other stuff, don't want to do it again.

will try the diagnostics. txs for the suggestion. did not try safe mode. dont know whether it happens each and every time or not. just put the password yesterdeay so was nable to see it today. it seems the problem goes away after 5 minutes, so hard to catch. also i did not know that it was happening until the password problem. so will be vigilant now.

txs again. will try the diag and see what happens.

Ran the diagnostics. No problems found. Yesaterday there was no problem with the keys. But once I had to press the "I" pretty hard to make it work. Seems like I have to call Dell.

Any luck with the safe mode environment? If it doesn't repeat the problem in safe mode then it's likely a program in there that could be messing things up. You could have something installed in there that's trying to load or even access the network but can't during the initial login? Yeah, I'm sure if you contact Dell they will be able to follow through with you a bit more decisively... and of course replace the keyboard/motherboard if necessary. What if you plug in an external keyboard to your laptop? If your built-in keyboard doesn't work, hook up an external keyboard to test and see if it repeats itself from that point on?

The keys are not working in the safe mode also. And my desktop does not have a USB keyboard so cannot test with a external keyboard also.

So I called up Dell yesterday. The rep basically told the same steps that were done - diag, safe mode, external keyboard and then decided to replace the keyboard. Hopefully the replacement will work.

    Txs for all the help.
