I know there has been back and forth on this so I happened to have a 2x8GB package of G.Skill PC1600 Ram that I'm reserving for the new laptop and thought to give it a shot. The L501X will detect 16GB of ram in it's slots. The ram will be clocked at PC1333 if the ram are rated higher due to either CPU or chipset limitations however that should allow the ram to have tighter timings anyways. Mine were running at the 9-9-9-24 configuration when I checked. Have fun!

To get 16 GB RAM, I believe you need a Clarksfield Core i7 quad core, my Alienware M17xR2 is PM55 with 920XM, and does 16 GB though in BIOS it sees "0 MB" per DIMM.

The procesor in mine is a 740qm which is listed on intel's site as 8gb max but the bios saw 8gb per slot properly and the images aboved depicted 16gb. It is a clarksfield chip though as well.

    hi Shinji

could you give the spec of the ram for the L501x or possibly a link to where can I get it?

    regards
    Mel

So by installing it, are there any requirement need to be set? or just let it be as it is. Does upgrading the ram can reduce the temperature significantly when playing game?

For me I just left it go. Unfortunately I didn't leave it in long enough to really test it. There is a very real possibility that even though mine saw it that it wouldn't of been stable. The ram was put in while I was waiting on my new laptop and never got a chance to really test to make sure it worked well. One of the possibilities is that when the system fills up the first 8GB and starts addressing the remaining ram that it may crash if the processor and/or the chipset is unable to access more than that amount. It is also possible that I just got lucky that my system saw the full amount at all and that your system won't see the ram at all or will only see 8GB.

Hey Gilbox, how are you? Could please confirm you Dell xps15 L501x?

I was wondering in risking trying to put 16gb in my dell l501x as well. I'm kinda afraid because Intel says that my i7 q740 only supports 8gb. If you have the same notebook and processor model, could you please confirm if your system is stable so far? Thank you very much!
