I'd like to buy a Dell UltraSharp U2711 (2560x1440) display, but need to drive it via the HDMI port since my DisplayPort is already driving a 2560x1600 display.

Does anybody know if I can use a HDMI to DVI-D adapter to get resolutions greater than standard 1920x1080 out of the HDMI port? And if so, can it be done while simultaneously driving the 2560x1600 out of DisplayPort?

I realize the onboard panel becomes unusable when two external monitors are in operation.

Some may wonder why I want a 2nd external at the expense of the nice built-in display... Well, I've turned my desk into a "Tread Desk" with a treadmill, and I find it too difficult to read the high-dpi 1920x1080 panel at a 30" distance while walking - but can read my existing 30" 2560x1600 just fine at the same distance.

I hope someone can help, since I don't want to drop $900 on this display if it's not going to work out.
