I hope someone can help, here's my prob:

Got an L502x, Vertex 3 SSD and Win 7 x64. All been working fine for months, had the original well documented hanging issue but reg fix sorted that.

Regularly close the lid and put it to sleep without shutting it down. Always came out of sleep without a problem, never hung, everything fine.

    Until today that is.

Opened my laptop today and logged in, then it hung, nothing worked. Couldnt do anthing, had no choice but to hold the power button.

Rebooted to error ' No Operating System Found', then restarted and no HD was available so it tried to boot from network. HD not showing in the bios. Tried several things inc booting from windows disc and trying repair (no good because HD not there), removing HD, loads of reboots.

Finally for no apparent reason booted up fine. Couple of hours later crashed with some strange BSOD. Same problem, cant get the f**ker back up and running now.

The strange thing is when booting (or trying to boot) and the xps logo with the blue bar is on the screen it goes really really slowly where ordinarily this take 2 secs.

I thought maybe a windows update had changed something as ive not done anything else.

    Thoughts? HD? MB?

    Someone please help me

    Thanks

    Gaz

I had a smiliar experience with my vertex 2 but on a different laptop. I also have the vertex 3 on my dell now no problems so far. reminds me again to make backups....... I would not trust the Vertex3 anymore if was I was you. I think its a defective drive.

You can try putting the v3 in a different laptop to see if the bios finds it. if not get it xchanged. good luck!

I took the hd out, booted up without it, shutdown, plugged it back in and now im up and running again.

Hmm, something stinks somewhere. lets see how long it is before it goes off again. nothing in the event viewer though.

Best of luck to you! It's threads like these that are making me lean towards Crucial or Intel for my impending SSD purchase.

Next time I'd go for Crucial too. Vertex is blazing but fickle

Opened it up today, logged in, crashed, BSOD.

What the **** is wrong with this thing?

Is it a faulty drive? Any OCZ/SSD tools that can check?

I installed a Crucial M4 128GB . No problems here, no need for any drivers during install (in fact I'm using MS ahci standard drivers) or any registry tweeks.. No locking or any other problems.Sleep and Hibernation works fine.

What BSOD errors are you getting?

If you have any way of getting a replacement/refund at this point, I would do so.

    Getting the F4 BSOD.

Tried redoing the reg tweak, tried the new intel drivers, nothings working.

Crashes out of sleep. boots up normally sometimes and then randomly bsods.

I need to know if it's the drive or windows or intel or dell.

If it's the drive i'll RMA the b*tch asap but id like to image it and put it onto a new drive but worried that will dupe the problem.

    NoSlow5oh thoughts?

I'm certainly no expert where SSD units are concearned, but I thought the golden rule of using an SSD with Windows is not to put the machine to sleep.
I have a Vertex III in my Dell XPS 17 and I've had no issues with it once I got it working in AHCI mode in the bios and using the right driver in Win 7.
But I'm not saying that your SSD unit isn't defective....but I wouldn't use hte sleep mode. Is there any reason to? My Vertex III equipped system boots and shuts down in such little time scales.

If you have an extra usb external hdd laying around, clone the drive to the external and boot from it. See what happens. If you need a cloning utility, Easeus Todo Backup works great for cloning to dissimlar bootable hardware. Don't even worry about taking out the vertex, just change the boot options in the bios.

And by all means, if you have sensitive/critical data on your vertex, back it up to something before you possibly lose everything.

    Hi,

I'm setting up the same rig, but still cannot boot in AHCI. It seems that I cannot install recognized drivers for Intel RST. Could you please let me know which ones you used ?

    Thanks for your help

I should get my Vertex 3 tomorrow. Any advice on doing the clean install of Win7? Are there any BIOS changes I have to make? I got the driver/utility install order list from the Owner's Lounge, but I don't want to start the install of Win7 and get to a puzzlng choice, as access to another coomputer to read up on the problem is not easy here in Iraq.

    1. Download latest Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver v.10.1.2.1004, A01 from Dell website and extract to root of thumb drive.

    2. Download latest Intel WiFi driver from Dell website and copy to thumb drive.

    3. Update BIOS if necessary (A05 was latest) and make sure SATA is set to AHCI mode.

    4. Install Windows 7 Ultimate as follows:
    a) Edit BIOS to make DVD 1st in boot order.
    b) Boot with Windows DVD inserted.
    c) When prompted, select "Load Driver", insert thumb drive and browse to Intel driver.

    5. After Windows is installed, install the WiFi driver from thumb drive to gain internet access.

    6. Use Registry fix to disable LPM Command for SSD from here:
Solution: C300 Disk Freeze-ups in Windows 7 solved... - Crucial Community

    7. Verify Device Manager->IDE ATA Controllers shows Intel SATA AHCI Driver

    8. Follow SSD Optimization Guide at...

    9. Install drivers in the order listed at:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...15-r2-l502x-owners-lounge-37.html#post7415385

    10. Perform all necessary Windows Updates (including Service Pack 1)

I never did install RST. In Rogo's post he says it's for RAID systems. And from the C300 post, it sounds like LPM is an issue with RST.

I'm not seeing any issues with my Vertex 3.

When I installed it I forgot to remove and short the CMOS battery. Win7 installed just fine, but my WEI stayed at 5.9. I then removed the battery (I hadn't snapped the palmrest back on yet) and let it sit while I repasted the heatsinks. After reassembly WEI now shows 7.9, and still no problems. (and no spare parts!)

Are there any other reasons to use RST? I haven't done any benchmarks yet, as I'm not sure which the most common one is, one that everyone will be able to relate to. Any advice?

I got the idea from this post here...
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/7405176-post33.html

    ...which is taken from...
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...-xps-17-l702x-vertex-3-ssd-2.html#post7405176

Also, I've read on other forums that people are reporting improved performance with Intel RST (F6 driver) vs the default Win 7 driver for Vertex 3 in AHCI mode. Aside from that, one has to wonder why the Intel RST driver is posted in the L502x Drivers & Downloads section on the Dell website for a system that only has 1 drive (and therefore no RAID)?

I did not short the CMOS either, however, Windows reported a WEI Primary Hard Disk score of 7.9 immediately.

In your case, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
