    Hi all,

I know some people where able to get a UK layout backlit chicklet keyboard when they ordered by phone. I wasn't one if those so I'm hoping to be able order one separately and fit it myself. Thing is when I ring the spares and upgrades they cant find the part. Can someone who has received one please confirm they do indeed get a UK layout, it's still a new island style chicklet keyboard and finally the part number as well.

    Thank you

The Item Number on my order was:

583-14899 Keyboard : Internal Backlit UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard

I haven't had the KB out yet - so I can't give you any other numbers that might be written on the underside.

    Good luck - I like it :)

Edit - and yes, it's UK layout and the new island / chicklet key style.

Many thanks for that Occams. I ordered one up this morning. They identified the bit. It cost £53 + vat (£70.20). Not the cheapest item in the world but the old chicklet one will go on ebay.

Annoying to have to pay the full price rather than upgrade price for it, given that they didnt originally admit it even existed!

Did they give you dire warnings about your warranty when you ordered? Or are they vaguely ok with it?

Dell allowed me to replace & upgrade the LCD in my L501x, and keep my warranty intact.
The general rule is if you break something while doing it you're in trouble but realistically they have no way of knowing how any damage was caused....
Assuming you know what you're doing.

They didn't give me any warnings...the Dell Parts and Upgrades is actually a different company altogether in the UK...they have no interest in it. To be honest, I doubt anyone will ever know any different anyway.

Yeah it is a little annoying that I had to pay full price...couldn't really see another way of doing it. I used Quidco voucher for 10% off the whole thing at the time (with free shipping) so I saved a little I guess. 14 days and I'm still waiting for mine to go into production...something's wrong but Dell won't acknowledge there's an issue each time I ring a deflated operator who couldn't care less.

So I've got to change my CD/DVD drive to a Blu-Ray writer and rip our the 4GB (2x2GB) RAM and put in my 8 (2x4GB) RAM and now change the keyboard too...i'm making a brand new laptop by the looks of it :) lol

    ouch...

thats why I keep going back to the dell page every week to see if blu Ray, TV Tuner and Backlit keyboard are selectable options.

its a shame how we get treated in the UK... considering we are even paying more than the US. we also get even crappier service if you have the misfortune of having to call Dell support :(

I do feel for you. I guess I was lucky with my phone order, getting the backlit UK keyboard. About the Dell customer service - I have been pretty impressed with service all up - yes, the WiFi aerials were not attached and the bluray drive was faulty upon arrival, but one call and they are shipping me a new optical drive kit tomorrow and they offered an engineer visit.

It's slightly annoying that slightly more tech savy punters have to jump through rings and do the 1hr of triage at the beginning of each call in order for them to 'get' your issue...and they do like to repeat arduous tech spiel at you that they're reading from the screen in front of them...but the key is to speak loudly and over the top of them and give them time to catch up with you! :)

I do find them genuinely helpful and polite and as long as they keep replacing the broken bits within 48 hours...for the next 4 years, without any arguments, they will get my nod of approval. :)

Well I think When support is good it is good and when it is bad it is really bad.

I spent a better part of 1yr chasing dell support for a free 2nd battery that was supposed to come with a notebook I purchased sometime ago. I had to give up in the end and accept defeat after over 100 calls of been passed from pillar to post.....

I hate the fact that we in the UK have no choice but to always go through to Dell India for Support. I wonder if it is the same for the Irish as well.

I have bought my XPS 502x via dell's website today. Backlit keyboard costs extra £30 as un upgrade when customizing your spec and the only way to add it to your order is via phone or online chat with sales rep. So I guess its a better idea to order it that way instead of eventually paying £70 for a part and then fitting it yourself?

HI. Saw you signature. My question is regarding the intel wireless 1030 bluetooth combo. I see that mine is the same. I bought my xps laptop a month ago. I think there is a problem with my wifi capability. I can't buffer videos or download any thing via torrent that easily as my other friends do. We have a virgin 50mbps connection and I can't even load my mail effectively. It takes one minute to load. Is your wifi capability good? is there a chance of replacement or should I buy a new one? in that case which one do you think will better support my laptop. I don't have a backlit keyboard as well. How much would it cost me? any idea? thank you.

Some thing you can try: In the Netherlands there is a trick to order the backlit keyboard online. When you are on the page to adjust the spec of your laptop, disable your internet, and change some spec. After max 30 sec a popup should come, enable your internet again, wait a few secs and press ok. This should bring u up at a page you can select amongst other things your keyboard (somewhere on the bottom). Let me know if it works.

    Howdy!

Please see -> Dell UK XPS L502 backlit keyboard on eBay

Your thoughts? It's Dell Part # is 0N76J4 I've ordered it anyway, so I'll let you know if it fits. €20.00 with delivery? Not exactly going to break the bank if it's a dupe.

I know there's no picture but this is an image of the French XPS L502 keyboard they supply.

I followed this post and I too ordered a keyboard, it came today, less than a week from ordering it with free delivery. I am in UK. Excellent buy, I have saved this seller on ebay, they do some great parts. If you want a backlit board, this is a no brainer. thanks for your research, much appreciated.

Hello All, Could you help me out with a few questions:
    1. Is the upgrade easy? Do you have any tips on the upgrade?
    2. Is the backlit replacement identical quality compared to the original?
    3. Is the replacement the same colour as the standard keyboard? Mine presently looks black whereas the replacement backlit part states "grey".

    Many Thanks,

    xmal

It's incredibly easy. The replacement keyboard seems to be a genuine Dell part. It's better quality than the standard keyboard. The keys are grey but it actually looks better than the black.

Here's how to replace your keyboard.

It's super super easy, you only need to remove 1 screw and the keyboard just unclips. I replaced my keyboard in under 5 minutes.

Here's the pictures of how it looks on the laptop. Sorry for the lazy/bad quality. Note on the standard keyboard the labels are just stickers.

Did you follow the DELL instructions for removing the Palmrest before removing the keyboard?
Does the new backlit keyboard require an additional connector or does it use exactly the same connector as the NON Backlit one?

    Thanks,
    FrankyG

Yup, you just remove one screw under the battery as it shows in the Dell manual. I then used 2 bank cards to pry up the palmrest gently by the power button.

The keyboard has the exact same connector as the non-backlit keyboard. It also has an extra connector that slides into a connector down lower. It's all in the manual. Very simple, don't forget to release the latches before removing/inserting the cables!

    Fitted and working!

It's easy to do, slightly scary pulling the palm rest away from the base but really straightforward. Will post some pics tonight hopefully.

Don't forget the backlit keyboard has an orange icon (looks like a crown) on the F6 key. You use F6 to raise and lower the brightness of the keyboard - hence the icon to show you which button controls the backlight.

Thanks Tazzle for the eBay information. Fitted mine about 10 minutes ago. Took about 5 minutes to fit in although I was very hesitant removing the palm rest in case I bent or snapped it.

Delivery from the eBay seller was really good considering the distance with delivery taking just under a week from order.

    Hi Tazzle and All,

I'd like to order a backlit keyboard for my L502x in the UK.

Tazzle, the keyboard you posted to say for Inspiron 14R? I guess that's no problem? Also, I see that you're ordering from ebay.ie not .co.uk? Any issues delivering to the UK?

Also I see a few other similar keyboards for Spanish/German users etc? Is there any difference from the English keyboard version?

Love the prices compared to Dell's prices! :D

    Thanks :)

    1. They'll deliver to UK no problem.
    2. Spanish & German keyboard layouts are different to UK, you won't want them.
    3. Ebay extension doesn't matter.
    4. The 14R keyboard is the same as the L502x.

    *UPDATE*
Ah, I see they are out of stock. Please see the below for updates on availability and keep and eye on their eBay store too.

    Cheers Tazzle, really helpful. :)

Am I correct in thinking that only the grey version is backlit? Edit: yes, it is - I just read up a couple of posts, doh! :)

Also which delivery option did you use? Economy or Express from eBay? I'm not in any particular rush but was wondering if it was better to go with Express in case it got lost in post.

    Cheers!

    Hi All,

Has anyone seen any competitively priced UK backlits L502x keyboards on the go? I've been waiting a while for China Gemwon to get them back in stock, but I don't think they have yet :(

    Any hot tips?

    Thanks! :)
