After months of researching,testing of many solutions and surfing tons of forums...here I am with the same problem with my gt 54om ,crashing,freezing and making that old funny
noise forcing me to hold the power bottom and you know all the story.....

So i decided to use your mod bios to UV my GPU and it`s done as your instruction.
I`m monitoring voltage by two apps at the same time (GPU-Z and nvidia inspector).
It seems to me everything goes well so far...
I was going to monitor the new mod bios voltage while playing Darksiders II and Godfather II (old games..yeah....but it`s just testing)the same issue happen again after 2 min playing(crashing,freezing and making that old funny noise
)...
I was lucky to press Ctrl+Alt+Del or Alt+F4 or Alt+Tab and close the games sometimes and check the GPU voltage...SURPRISINGLY...I noticed that voltage jumped to 1.0v at the time of crashing but I`m using 0.85v.
Then I decided to UC and OC using MSI After burner as you said in first post but still It crashes then voltage jumps to 1.0v....WEIRD..
I did the same test over and over again with some other games and the result was same.
PLEASE kindly advised......I appreciate you in advance.

Note:I have XPS L502x with following config. :
CPU:i7-2670QM
RAM:8.0 GB
OS:Windows 7 -64Bit
GPU:Nvidia-GT 540m
and I used following mod bios so far but nothing solved:
A07 - 0.85v
A09 - 0.85v
A11 - 0.85v
A12 - 0.85v
A12 - 0.92v

hello after years ago i moded my bioses with your tutorial, it is possible back to original version ? because now all games crashes..

You can enable logging to file in GPU-Z so don't need to Alt+Tab.
Voltage readings sometimes are bugged. And after crash it often gives 1V.
Check 0,83/0,83 voltage. And remember that MSI Afterburner doesn't underclock automatically after Windows start. Also have you underclocked memory? -

After using mod bios I did underclock graphics,memory and processor like this:
572 for graphics,782 for memory and 1144 for processor.
It reduced the crash frequency but it`s still there bro

The only way that I can get rid of this famous
crash is to unplug adapter cable and use system on battery.

I know the Intel ME firmware update is independent but is there any chance if I do this update?

It shouldn't have impact on graphic card. Looks like you need to underclock more. I know that it's sad, but there haven't been any other solution yet.

I have exact same model and exact same problem as @william pezo.
Sad doesn't even begin to cut it, been underclocking it for years and it just gets worse and worse.
Undervolting doesn't work so I'm sure overvolting won't either. Crashes are independent of temperature, in my case. -

If you feel things get better,I must say with that underclocking I mentioned in my last post I can enjoy playing FIFA 15 ,PES 15,NFS Rivals and COD Advanced warfare,off course there are still crashes but I got used to them.

Yeah I have been underclocking for a few years now, but lately my fps just drop and drop until the games are unplayable. I can play Torchlight II on high graphics for hours and not have a single problem. But other games I can't even run properly on low settings. Lately been playing a lot of GunZ 2 : The Second Duel and when I start I have 120 fps and then it goes all the way down to 30 in a matter of minutes. And I just got in to the HoTS beta... Will see how that goes... -
Last question Agalin,regarding your overclocked 540m would you plz revert your setting for me here exactly?
as :
1-Which mod bios you are using?
2-Your OC figures for graphics,memory and processor?
3-Which app do you use for over/under clocking?(e.g. MSI after burner,Nvidia control panel or nvidia inspector...)
4-Did you remove cooling fan dust filter and/or do repaste procedure?
5-And finally,did you manage to solve this issue for ever? -

Yeah man it makes me really sad... It didn't use to happen when I first started playing but these last few days it's been getting worse. Games are usually 4v4 and its a really fast paced third person shooter so it makes it unplayable. Other games seem to be a bit more stable but fps on these doesn't affect me that much. Today it started as 125 fps and then lowered to 60-70 and when I played two more matches with my friend it went all the way down to 30. I am really out of options at this point. On the other hand the random fan speedup/speed down seems to have been resolved by flashing the bios. Will be keeping my eye here for any future updates. -

2. Graphic core oc up to 720 (game depends, League of Legends doesn't like OC)
3. Nvidia Performance Toolkit (Nvidia control panel)
4. Repaste, but OC has been working before it too.
5. I haven't had that issue. It seems that some chips are just higher quality than other (In your sittuation (especially @Andre Lima) it seems that graphic card is dying). I still have crash time to time, but more probably due to not really stable OC which some games dislike. -
Hi, I'm in the same position as William (I think).
Behaviour is erratic enough to indicate HW failure.
I have never done a BIOS update, let alone a modded one... reluctant to attempt where there is no undo option (Intel ME FW can't be un-updated, for example).
I've tried underclocking my GT540m, using NVIDIA's Performance tools, and sometimes it's ok (for a while), then it crashes.
I'm trying to use HDMI with Samsung tV, running exclusive-fullscreen apps like Rocksmith and XBMC ( not, imho, especially exhaustive graphical calculations!) but I've also had the problems even running internet backgammon on the laptop display.
Like William (where stock voltage resets, even after BIOS mod), I notice the stock clock speeds are (re)set when the crash occurs (instead of unclocked). It's almost never a BSOD (can't remember last time I saw one). I'm not sure if it's overheating (the hot air vent feels quite warm when the OS gets to that unresponsive stage).

DRIVERS:
For a long time, I was using the drivers recommended (+ provided) by Dell (from the owners thread on this forum, alas my links are broken).
More recently (after exhaustive searching and testing) I've found newer drivers (thanks to this and this)
Prior to the new intel gfx #9.17.10.3517 driver (when using dell's intel #8.15.10.2342) GPU-Z would detect an OpenCL bug on launch (that I'd skip) - new intel driver resolves this
One thing, re the new drivers: I think there's an issue with the (new) Intel MGMT Engine driver #10.0.28.1000 that I used (instead of Dell's recommended #9.5.15.1730). When I try and monitor temps and volts using HWID the program stops responding and crashes at the Intel MGMT Engine stage
The problem that I have (usually after some unquantifiably joyous period of time HD XBMC'ing on the Samsung TV) is most accurately described here
I'll take a shot the next time it happens...

I've noticed some (lots!) of throttling events (further analysis req.) I suspect these may be related to the very poor graphical performance issues I'm experiencing...
Is there a decent GPU debug app/processs anyone can recommend? even an nvidia log (other than install of course) something like this perhaps (different OS)

I think I tried the latest version previously, currently running on 347.09.
One thing to check is that cuda,physx etc are all still reportedly working (run gpu-z with nvidia processor to check).
Re the 347.09 (with the new intel perhaps) it's the first time the HD audio handover has been seamless.. .previously the samsung tv would not be listed in playback devices UNTIL nvidia cpl was accessed (clicking Set up digital audio > open windows sound settings would kick it up it's HD posteria and magically the samsung TV would appear as the default audio device)
I've read that (where the nvidia setup does not include custom install option for nvidia hd audio driver) the nvidia hd audio driver is auto-installed (there are lengthy workarounds discussed to overcome this, another thing I'm looking out for)
Last night we watched 'the interview' on xbmc via hdmi on samsung @ 1920x1080 (or similar, ie native recommended). Apart from a stream loss (which we recovered from) and some app-minimizing (windows activation reminders) , no crash occurred, temps were normal (monitored using gpu-).
To my knowledge, the only change is that I used extended display (not 'projector only') - this was so I could watch the volts etc throughout, ie see if load/temp soared " crash time... no crash!
Perhaps the 200hours usage time has been achieved and the arctic silver paste is working overtime now?
status: better, still monitoring (will try newer nvidia and compare re STABILITY).

Yes, I've tried NVIDIA control panel system tools (nsu profiles) + MSI afterburner + NVIDIA inspector to try and underclock ... this was met with some successs, but invariably, it seemed that nvidia was doing something that resulted in the nvidia svc restarting.. 'falls off the bus' - then the clocks would reset to the {less stable} stock speeds...
I havent' tried the BIOS mods (last thing I'd like to tamper with, brick-phobia + can it be undone)?
HOWEVER, I am interested in this Intel MGMT Engine stuff...
HWInfo crashes (as mentioned in that link) - indicative of driver issues?
(Are you able to run HWInfo?) I've read about the BIOS mod.

I've just spoke to dell (and their sales affiliates). after much debate (re distance selling returns and rights) they took the part # for my power supply to my l502x- CN-0JU012-48661...
Immediately, the tone of the conversation changed, and Pete in sales @ 'upgrades.co.uk' reported I had a charger for a different laptop (a latitude).
Some more holding, and I got a quote for a 150w power supply - intended for use with l502x's etc.... £75
If it doesn't work, there may cost involved to return.
Does anyone have a 150w dell power supply?
(if so, can you please provide a part number?!)
if anyone can advise re (UK) vendor options... that'd be awesome.

150W? Isn't 130W version most powerful L502x charger? AFAIR 90W is shipped with GT525/i5 configurations and 130W with GT540/i7 configurations...

I have the i7-2670QM CPUs (if that makes a difference) + the GT540m.
found the 'disable intel ME' option with HWInfo so I can monitor volts- no gpu info and complaints re a dell ec sensor (disabled as unstable) - lots of data available.
Trying to see if SOMETHING is spiking (power or temp, right now still unable to use nvidia without seemingly inevitable crash, eventual freeze. some improvement reducing xbmc's res' to 1280x720 on display 2, but still not stable

First, do you think my crash (usually when trying to xbmc/rocksmith on FS exclusive via HDMI) is power related?
Using a 130w (very occasionally identified as 'unknown device' on boot - 'F2 bios -> unplug -> reconnect power' usually fixes it).
Tried thermal repaste (2nd time used arctic silver), cleaned fan... not yet removed those dust filter stickers the cap' mentioned
Nothing strikes me as dangerous re temps, but voltage seems to fluctuate (.83 > 1) unpredictably... doesn't correlate to when crash might occur
Tried reducing resolution (1920x1080 > 1280x720) and 'imitation FS' (suppresses xmbc-minimise on alt+tab but reportedly requires more processing)
HDMI not currently connected and XBMC causes crash on load.
Was about to invest in those RCS-3 heatsinks but just read that impact may be 'negligible'...

For me the answer seems to be power related. I haven't ruled out vregulators + heat sinks and all that malarkey... and I'm very tempted to try this BIOS mod thing. Here's why
- I've tried all kinds of tweaks, from TDR regedits + thermal repaste, of course every nvidia setting, lots of driver version tests... always on clean builds, not even s.pack1 added yet... updated to latest drivers of everything I could find... nvidia system tools seemed to help a little at one time (underclocking, so I thought reducing heat, oblivious to how many hotpoints and sensors this thing has...)

After doing my own little research, I found out that Shader Clock = 2 * Core Clock. So if you decrease the core clock by 80, the Shader decreases by 160.
As many people have posted that decreasing both memory and core clocks by 100 have solved their problem. I would like to bring to their notice that only decreasing the core clock by 80 would do the same. There will be no crashes and no lags and less frame drop and more performace as compared to the the latter method.
Default Settings:
Memory: 900
Core: 672
Therefore Shader = 2 * Core = 2* 672 = 1344
New Settings:
Memory: 900
Core: 592
Therefore Shader = 2*592 = 1184
Only decrease the core clock by 80 mHz rest everything is fine. You can do this by nVidia system tools, MSI Afterburner etc.
I have not experienced any problem after making these changes. "
I monitored voltage with GPU-z, and the Nvidia 'VDDC' stays @ .98v... whilst playing a movie (paused) I can switch to 'fake fs-mode' - so I can multi-task without xbmc minimising [haven't setup actual multimon ... yet: ]
tomorrow I will test (with samsung hdmi tv - currently using a0c hdmi > dvi, sound on laptop)
and add up the power consumption of each component! (I broke my backlit keyboard... can't wait to replace)
2nd most illuminating thing I've read today (from Jared, the author of THE XPS 15 review)
So all of the GT 525M, 540M, and 550M chips are the "same", but they're the same in the way that the i7-2630QM, i7-2720QM, i7-2820QM, and i7-2920XM are the "same" (barring differences in L3 cache sizes). Without actually looking at a large sample, I don't know if NVIDIA is tweaking voltage levels, but they're very likely doing some form of binning.
Intel for example will do some tests to verify a chip can handle the desired speed at a reasonable voltage; if it can't do 2.2GHz at 1.25V (or whatever), then they'll try for a lower clock with that same voltage, or maybe raise the voltage slightly but drop the clock, etc. I don't know all of what Intel does or doesn't do with binning, but in general their higher-end (e.g. more expensive) CPUs run at lower voltages at stock and overclock better with more voltage. So, considering the number of chips NVIDIA is offering that are essentially the same, I suspect they have a way of determining which are the better chips.
So if 10% is a minor difference in performance, why would anyone upgrade? Because they're generally uninformed. The 1GB to 2GB jump won't help at the settings where these chips run well -- which is usually lower resolutions at medium detail. 1GB to 2GB becomes useful when you're running at least 1080p with very large textures, and for that you really need at least a GTX 460M (or HD 5870M).
This is actually one of the frustrating aspects of buying a laptop. So many companies will sell you a GT 420M/425M/435M/525M/540M/550M graphics chip with Optimus in a 14" or 15.6" laptop. (Those are all 96 CUDA cores with 128-bit DDR3 memory, so basically the only change is the clock speed of the cores, which ranges from 500MHz on the 420M up to 740MHz on the 550M.) Finding anything with the GT 445M/555M on the other hand.... Well, the Alienware M14x and Dell XPS 17 L702x are currently the only laptops with the GT 555M, and to my knowledge the old XPS 17 L701x was the only laptop with the GT 445M. I'm not a big fan of 17.3" notebooks, so that's why I think the M14x may be the best balance of price, size, and performance for a gaming laptop

Examples of apps not identifying NVIDIA GPU seems to include all modern browsers.
I use ChromePortable, but I've tested different browers/versions... and I fear this Optimus issue has quite an impact.
GPUCapsViewer (1.8.2) includes lots of info + tests
- before I identified the 1v=unstable GPU issue I was having [and the associated solution of underclocking!] I was installing lots of different intel/nvidia drives, and using this tool to tell me about opencl/physx etc...
It tells me that the main renderer is intel, just like chrome (et al?)
If I run with Intel, it reports on that
Run one of the OpenCL2 demoes (which includes overlay info re GPU renderer) - even if running with high-performance NVIDIA processor, Renderer reported is Intel...

I've played with some GL stuff, and it works- but it won't perform as well as it could, and some functionality may be disabled... haven't found anything to test directx stuff yet....

It works! chrome:gpu reports the correct NVIDIA renderer also... still not sure on the D3d stuff tho...

You should test performance. Renderer is displayed as Intel because... Nvidia generates image that's displayed on Intel (screen is connected to Intel card). It has never been displayed properly on which device program is running.
@jonnyhotchkiss soft descriptor unlock has failed. "undervolting, overclocking, fast strings and other useful features only available through BIOS mods" are available through BIOS mods as you've said
Just flash BIOS like normal BIOS update and enjoy. Danger? Really small, if you've lost power during update. Even then there's recovery method descripted in the first post. No soldering required. That's only needed when you want to unlock descriptor. The only thing which requires descriptor unlock is BCLK change.

LIKE, an online test with fps? do you have anything in particular in mind....
Also, I'm not sure what benefits are reaped from the BIOS mod... With underclocking, my GPU load sits @ a happy .98V... perhaps (probably) due to the degradation mentioned by Kasar, it seems stock speeds can no longer be achieved...

Lower voltage = less power consumption and lower temps.
It's not exactly benchmark, but you can easily check on which card is running your browser running tests from http://www.chromeexperiments.com/webgl/ just have checked http://david.li/flow/ and on Intel it works MUCH worse than on Nvidia. And you can see GPU usage for both Intel and Nvidia in GPU-Z or something similar. -

This is kind of unrelated but you're the only one I know who can help me.
So, I just got my Dell L502x motherboard repaired by a local shop, It works fine now except the webcam is not detected by windows, I tried reinstalling Quanta H.264 Integrate Webcam Driver, it installed without any errors but my webcam still doesn't show up in device manager. Also, the lid sensor is not working, when I close the lid the display doesn't turn off and it doesn't go to sleep which it should according to power options. If it matters the display port on the motherboard is little damaged as in one or two pins are bent but the display is working fine. I was wondering could it be the reason the webcam and lid sensor are not working ?

Check ribbon connecting power button. AFAIR I have had not working lid sensor when not fully connected.

Are there any new information when the next version of the modded BIOS will be released? The integration of the Sandy Bridge microcode 0x29 would be nice. Microsoft still did not update the microcode which is integrated into Windows 8.1.

My card Nvidia GT540m is crashing during players.
I already installed your modded bios changing the voltage to 0.85.

If possible, could you create a modded bios to Dell L502x with GT540m changing also the frequency of GPU to 900mhz? -
Frequency is not changed in mods, because you can manage it using external programs, i.e. MSI Afterburner.

I'm keen to test... I guess I need some GL web app that reports on frames (for quantative results) and maybe something that can be configured and upped to see what max performance is on nvidia renderer vs intel... (like the fishtank)
I just found this - it's only useful if you're not a mere mortal (kasar + co) and if the software-based-BIOS-unlocking isn't yet a (complete?) option...
An overview of what can be done (menu unlocks, anything else?), and what is needed (hardware access + skills to ... whatever! ie how) would be super useful... similarly, feedback from users re any known side effects (OS/SSD/native virtualiation/UEFI ... anything!)
still tempted to try and make a decent boot logo... -
Thanks for your reply @agalin, i already used afterburner and now i'm using Nvidia tools. however, i changed the frequency in Nvidia tools and my pc still is crash. Also i see that every chash the default values (672mhz) return autoamtically.
So, i think that is possible change the frequency in bios, fixed to 600mhz.

@dedos First BIOS is 0.85/0.85, second 0.83/0.83 and that's all difference.
You can download Intel ME from first post and it's latest available for that notebook. AFAIR you can install it whenever you want.
Improves temperatures by lowering voltage. Some options (Fast Strings) allow also better performance in special cases.
If you change WiFi card to something working on OSX, you can get working everything which don't need Nvidia graphic card (not tested card reader). Works stable, with native Speedstep. -
Hello Version 0.85 / 0.85 installed on my dell with gt525 and installed the Newest Intel ME, I felt a great improvement in speed and temperature.
1-EVEN without changing anything in My bios comes with by default improvements ??
2-And I would possible explanation for the option to video card primary bios Check COMES Standard IGP was wondering what are All options img??
