Hi,
I just got my Dell XPS 15 and its been great so far. BUT when I open files in Photoshop CS5, the file opens but it doesnt show anything on the screen. The layers and everything is there, but it just doesnt show the picture. I turned off opengl and its fine.
My computer specs are:
i7 2630qm
Nvidia gt525m
1920x1080 FHD screen
8gb ram
bluray burner
thanks!

Make sure it is using the nvidia GPU and not intel, when I try to use intel I get similar problems.
-
thanks! -
yes, go to nvidia control panel>manage 3d settings>global settings and see if its on 'auto select' or you can go to program settings and make photoshop run with nvidia graphics.
-
thanks, Ill give it a try later tonight!
-
nope, that didnt work... I went into the settings and changed the global setting to high performance and it still does it. Is there a way to do it on photoshop?
-
Your global setting set to high performance nvidia processor, you also need to specify what card to use under program settings....photoshop might still be set to intel there...set that to global or nvidia also.
-
Did you enable opengl back?
-
Then I tried setting the Global settings to High performance and enabled opengl and still doesnt work.. -

Have you tried right clicking on the photoshop icon and selecting "open with nVidia"?
-
its an isue with the Optimus drivers and OpenGL passthrough on the IGP. I had this issue last year on a number of systems and thought it was supposedly fixed
OP have you tried to remove your drivers and update them to a newer modded driver? I remember seeing this was working in an HP forum -
I haven't had any issues with photoshop cs5 on the xps15...
If you go into preferences under Performance in Photoshop, you should see the video card it is using...
Mine says GPU Settings:
NVIDIA Corporation
GeForce GT 525M/PCI/SSE2
Enable OpenGl Drawing is checked....

Maybe I need to specify the settings under 3) of the Nvidia control panel?
anyone know which setting deals with showing the picture or not? lol -
hmm weird.. I know this shouldnt be happening. Did you have to enable any settings or did you just install CS5 and all was good to go? -
Ok, I think I found the problem.... I have a Vzio LED tv connected via hdmi cable to my dell xps 15. I have my desktop extended to this tv, and when I set display desktop only on display 1, the problem goes away. Its 32 in and I use to for photo editing, is there a way to fix it so that it displays a picture on it in CS5?
-
I connected this to my sharp 40" ledtv with hdmi and it worked fine, as long as I was only mirroring the output of the desktop to the tv as well...
When i tried extending the desktop to the sharp, my laptop blue-screened, so i won't be doing that again...
Asking the system to run photoshop on a tv with hdmi (ie extend), and your desktop on the laptop screen could be asking alot because you have 2 video cards (one on the cpu) and there could be conflicting resource allocation, etc...
If you don't have either of the desktops 'extended'... this should then just mirror what you see on the laptop screen...
Hope this info helps...

I cant find the mirror option.. I know ive seen it before, where did you go to get to that.
I might just leave it with opengl off.. Does opengl do anything for photo editing not 3d?
thanks! -
Mirror is actually called clone I believe in Windows, perhaps that helps you out?
-
As long as you don't have either of the displays set to 'extend these displays', it should just duplicate the same thing on each monitor...
In display settings, each monitor should have a number , when u click on each panel number, you should get options for that monitor..
(I don't think it says mirror specifically)...
It may also say 'duplicate these displays'...if you can choose that i would... -
If you right-click on your desktop, choose 'screen resolution', this will get you to the display settings, each panel should have settings for how that monitor is output, under the 'multiple displays' dropdown...
-
Mine only says Extend, Only show desktop on 1, and Only show desktop on 2..
-
I have the tv connected thru hdmi, i see the desktop on both my laptop and my tv.
At the top, the screen labeled 1 is blue and is first.
In screen resolution settings, under Display: the drop down says "1. Mobile PC Display".
For Resolution, dropdown: says 1920x1080 (recommended).
For Orientation, dropdown: says Landscape
Under that, for Multiple displays: Show desktop only on 1.
To the right of the screen lableled 1 at the top, is a screen labeled "2" and is gray. When I click on screen 2 at the top, then in the dropdowns below i see:
Display: 2. SHARP HDMI
Resolution: 1920x1080 (but is grayed out).
Orientation: Landscape (but is grayed out).
Multiple Displays: Show desktop only on 1.
This works for me to see the same thing on the desktop, on the tv as well.
So I would just set both monitor setting (by clicking on each monitor icon at the top) to be "show desktop only on 1" and see if that works...

hmm Mine is set like too. for some reason when I choose Display only on desktop 1, nothing shows on my tv.
its alright. thanks for your help! Ill just turn off opengl.
Is there any benefit to opengl with photo editing? not in 3d? -
Well display only on desktop 1 does just that. Displays output ONLY to desktop 1, which is the built-in screen on the laptop.
-
Things don't always work the way that they are labeled...
OpenGl in photoshop is a way to accelerate some of the drawing and rotation functions, but it should not limit what functionality you have in the program... -
thanks guys. I think ill just leave opengl off

Hi there,
I just wanted to reply to this because its still a valid problem, and one that I just managed to rectify for myself. We have a Dell XPS 15z with an LG 22" External monitor connected via HDMI cable.
If you Disable "Windows 7 Aero themes" (All the transparent window borders, animated window transitions and transparencies when moving windows about) You will be able to leave "Enable OpenGL Drawing" on Photoshop CS5 performance settings.
For those unsure where to find this ..
1.) Start Button
2. Control Panel
3.) In the "Search Control Panel" Field, type "Performance tools"
4.) On the right side of the window that pops up click on "Adjust Visual Effects"
5.) In the window that pops up now, Check the option that says "Adjust for best performance"
6.) Apply - OK.
We use our XPS 15z for Photo Editing so there is one visual effect in the list that I enabled as we cant live without it, "Show thumbnails instead of Icons" You can safely turn this back on and works no problems.
Hope this helps .. Ben.
