Hello, what resolution can the DisplayPort on the xps 17 throw out? I'm looking at purchasing a 2560x1440 monitor, will the xps 17 output at that resolution from the displayport? and does that port use the Intel HD3000 graphics?

    Regards

Up to 2560x1600 can be done with the right adapter/cable. As mentioned in the other thread, you'll probably need the expensive Monoprice adapter for a res that high.

The DisplayPort will use either Intel or Nvidia graphics as desired (Optimus is still intact).

Optimus means it will only use the Intel's display controllers, though the nVidia GPU may chose to render the frame itself (then copy the finished frame to the Intel IGP frame buffer).

The "Monopiece" adapter seems to be a quality one the way you talk of it but how good is an apple one?

According to intel the Intel HD3000 is capable of 2560x1440, so surely the DisplayPort cable can handle that resolution with an adapter? that would be silly....

I've read of a few people running that resolution with just a mini displayport to displayport cable and it working fine.

    This cable should do it

    http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Mini-Displayport-to-Displayport-Adapter-Cable.html

    Specs:

8.64 Gbit/s forward link channel supports high resolution monitors up to 2560x1600 with single cable.

I have no personal experience with that Monoprice adapter, as my max res is 1920x1200 and I don't need it. However, I've used several cables/adapters from Monoprice in the past with great success despite their low cost. The reviews of that particular adapter seem to be mostly positive. Perhaps someone else in this forum can attest to that adapter or indicate a cheaper alternative?

DisplayPort will output 2560x1600 just fine without an adapter. However, your other thread indicated the requirement for a Dual Link DVI connection, which is why I indicated the adapter.

You wouldn't need the fancy adapter at all for resolutions of 1920x1200 or less. Any cheap mini-DisplayPort->DVI cable would work, such as...
For only $8.96 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 10ft 32AWG Mini DisplayPort to DVI Cable - White | Mini DisplayPort to DVI Cables

This is the exact cable I've been using at 1920x1200 for 9 months now. It merely goes from mini-DisplayPort to a Single-Link DVI connector.

JungleBungle's case is different because he is attempting a res beyond 1920x1200 thru a Dual-Link DVI connector on his monitor.
