Been away from the forums for a little while, so I've missed all the hubub about BF3.

Just curious to know before I go pick it up and waste 60 bucks, but how does it run on the L702x?

    And yes, I searched. :D

    Specs in my sig.

To be honest, I'm tempted to pick up an AMD powered HP from newegg they have on sale. HP=yucky (imo), but it's a decent looking system for the money.

People are running it just fine, especially those with the 555m. I don't think you can run ultra settings, but pretty high ones.

Naturally that desktop will run it a bit better.

    Still like the system?

Agreed that the forum search fails epically.

I saw a few youtube videos of people running it well saying they were getting around 40-45fps in the game on this laptop. Then I found a couple of people claiming only around 30.

Agreed about the desktop. I was planing on building one own my own next year, but that just seems like a great price for something with those specs. My last desktop with an old AMD A64 3200+ and that thing was a champ. Originally built it in 04 with the ATI 9600xt, then upgraded a year later to the X850 xt pro. The computer was built with Flight Sim as the primary concern and it ran it very well.

In today's world I prefer Intel, but I was very pleased with my AMD and I'm not opposed to buying another one.

My XPS is great. After I received my replacement after my screen issues with my first XPS, I did a fresh install and I still haven't installed anything more than virus protection and advanced system care. It doesn't get much use though.

I was at best buy and decided to check and see if anyone and posted in this thread. I'm glad you did though, I sat the 360 version down and picked it up for the laptop. I'm about to install the new nvidia drivers and BF3 and see how it goes.

I'm still tossing around the idea of a desktop though. For 600-800, I can pick up a built tower that would run circles around my laptop. Not sure what I want to do yet.

I get a few stutters every now and then, but it's running better than I expected. I think I'm bouncing from the low 20's to low 30's. I'm still playing with the settings trying to get it right.

Im actually a little pissed that the game does not have a built in menu. I really can't stand the fact that IE has to be launched to start any game mode. Not that it matters, but that's just another process to have running.

Origin is a large reason why I am not planning on getting BF3...

I've seen people getting 40 fps too, it largely depends on the setting used, from what I've read, BF3 is still messed up at the higher settings. People were having fps troubles playing on high settings on desktop GTX 580s (as in sub-30 fps)! Maybe that one's been fixed though with the new drivers.

Yea I'm with you on the Origin reason. Not buying it either. Oh well, saves money and gets me off my couch doing the more important stuff, i.e. exercise ;).

As for BF3, I feel like performance will get more stable with the next few driver releases. Usually takes Nvidia and ATI 1 or 2 drivers after big game releases to iron most things out, driver-wise. You should be able to at least get decent frames (30-40) at high graphic settings with your card, depending on the resolution of course. I, personally, wouldn't go below 1280x720 on resolution. Don't think you'll have to. Just fiddle around with the settings, until you find your sweet spot.

    40FPS+

gt555m is overclocked but I've found these settings work well (and trust me, am picky when it comes to sorting settings!)

just as a note, switching from HIGH-ULTRA settings I don't see much of a difference overall. The biggest noticeable differences being shadow quality, Mesh Quality - lower polygon count on everything ingame, including environment with LOD reducing at closer distances and dissapearing in the distance (although I would have thought terrain quality took care of that but apparently not) and the ambiant occlusion options (when turned off there's definitely a "flatness" to the environment. Although I'm sure some of my settings could be run on "ultra" I basically think If I don't notice a difference then what's the point in losing a couple of FPS for nothing?

so the settings I've settled on:

    res: 1600*900

all settings on "HIGH" apart from terrain and mesh quality on "MEDIUM" (mesh quality seems to make a 4-5fps difference on large scale maps like caspian border, don't see much of a difference with terrain quality so might aswell leave on medium anyway)

    FSAA: (MSAA antialiasing option) "OFF"

Post Process AA: Personal choice, doesn't make a difference to frame rate, personally not a fan of jagged edges but also not really a fan of the overall blur this adds to the image, keeping on "LOW" seems the best image payoff to me

motion blur "OFF" (although this adds to a feeling of smoothness when turning it also has about a 5fps frame rate hit which I'd rather have)

Ambiant Occlusion "SSAO" (SSAO only kills about 4-5FPS whereas HBAO hits about 12-15fps... it adds a slight sense of depth/reality to the image so, IMO it's worth keeping on, but not with the massive FPS death from HBAO.

VSYNC: ON. I normally keep vsync off in games as it generally hurts mouse responsiveness... but with so many post process effects/particles/lens flares/dust-on-screen effects going on screen tearing is really noticeable so keeping this on definitely helps smooth the image out.

game averages around the 40-45fps mark with these settings, dropping to 30 during heavy firefights etc but I've not seen it drop below 30. If you want to monitor frame rate then I think "Renderer.DrawFps 1" in the console will show the current frame rate in the top right of the screen

edit - alternatively, if you don't mind lower resolutions you can drop to 1366*768 and run everything on "high" with post-process AA on "high" to smooth (or vaseline) out the image slightly... you'll get a higher fps with this setting but BF3 isn't very kind to lower resolutions, there's just too much detail which gets jagged and lost.

Origin is a pain, but the game is very entertaining. For once, the Battlefield series actually has a single player that is worth a damn... Never thought I'd see that day.

I prefer the higher res, especially since I'm running on a 23.xx(?) monitor. But 1080p isn't necessary. When I drop my resolution, everything just seems to get blurry which bugs me, but I'll deal with it.

Jon, going to give your settings a shot and see what I get. Thanks for the post!

good question, have you tried setting audio ingame to something like "war tapes" and see if that switches the audio to dolby digital?
