My xps fan always seems to be on. I have two 640GB Samsung hard drives installed and as far as I remember they used to run at 38-40C max.
But from a couple of weeks my HDDs started going upto 45-50C while copying files. I ran a diagnostics test (HDDScan and HD Tune Pro) and they both gave me some warnings.
So I replaced one of my HDD with a brand new 1TB Samsung Now the problem seems to have gotten worse. My HDD Temps on idle are 45C and the fan is constantly on.
I called dell and they simply said thats normal ( I refuse to believe that because it wasn't like this when I bought the system).

What are the idle temps for your CPU and GPU? Have you tried to clean the mesh at the bottom of your laptop?
Just checked the idle temps for my both HDD drives (Seagate Momentus 7200.4 & Momentus XT), and it's 38c at the moment. -
After the shot they jumped up to 45C and 44C respectively, These are Idle system temps nothing running. Mine Used to be 38C as well but now Im not liking this. These temps are at room temp say 19-20C. -
Your temps seems good to me. I wouldn't bother much. I just started copying 45 gb from HDD 1 to HDD 2, so I will post temps results shortly.
UPD: I am sorry, it's 120 gb, not 45. So it might take a while.
UPD2: Ok, so temps reached max of 46c and 47c while copying 120 gb.
I think temps you have are absolutely normal. The drive temperature differs a bit, but we have different models though. -
Your temps are normal, mines where like that too when I had my HDD.

Thanks for the replies. Actually its the constant fan on which is bothering me more than the temps. The fan is constantly on and the hdd temps are sitting at 44-45C even when system is idle.
I have tried A11 A12 and A16 bios. Nothing seems to help the constant fan.
