I have tried the Dell community forums with this and what a waste of time that was, no-one is bothered answering me at all :(
So I would be very grateful to anyone here that might be able to shine some light on the situation or even if someone could try recreating the issue with their laptop just to prove I'm not crazy :p

That's been my experience as well. Also, there's a way to turn off charging in Windows that's been discussed on these forums, probably in the CP Power applet. It also resets after a restart.

This could be by design, thinking that more customers would get peeved if they forgot charging was off and their battery was down when they needed it.

My solution: burn the battery down to about 40%, remove it and put it in the laptop bag. I don't have the high cap battery, so removing it doesn't change the angle of the laptop. However, I do like the angle that would have been provided by the high cap because it increases intake airflow, so I use 1" blocks of foam at the back corners of the laptop to prop it up when in use.

If you have the Dell program called quickset, you can right click on the battery icon and select 'Dell Battery Meter'. In the battery meter, there is a check box for turn off battery charging. I guess when you turn it off in the bios, the program resets it to ON when it runs.

Thanks for the replies guys, really appreciate it!!

@mpalandr, I would rather not have to do a DIY job on it since the battery does a perfect job, if Dell would have allowed me just switch off charging!! But thanks for the suggestions.

As regards the Battery Meter, I do have those options as you listed rabbitz. I tried disabling Quickset but the options were still there. It gives me somewhere to start looking at least. Thank you very much, that program does seem to be the root of the problem. I'm going to mess around with this now and see if I can get it working properly :)

    Thanks again.

This might be what I was thinking of. So if I turn it off in BIOS and in Quickset, it should stay off after restarts? I thought I found that wasn't so, but it's been quite a while since I tried it.

My memory ain't what it used to be.

I don't even have Quickset installed and my BIOS resets that option. I did what mpalandr suggested and just removed it.

    Same issue here.

I CAN control the battery via right click on the battery symbol in the task bar, and it works, but just temporally. After a random number of restarts (1, 2, 3 or more) the charching behavior resets itself. In my BIOS it is set OFF!

I removed Quickset completely and the options when I right click the battery were gone too. So that is tied to Quickset. But even with it gone still no difference.

I'm beginning to think this is a "feature". Probably the only way to stop it is a BIOS mod :(

If you have a fully charged battery the system automatically disables charging until the battery needs it. I imagine this is software that is gone if you did a clean install, but if the software works as advertised, the battery should last quite a while.

It's nothing to do with a clean install, the problem is not in Windows it's got to do with the BIOS changing it's settings automatically.

And the reason I don't just charge it to 100% and leave it in is the battery will slowly discharge even if it's not being used and then once a small bit of charge is gone the laptop will then charge it again. This cycle helps ruin a battery. Plus if your not using your battery your best off leaving it at around 40% charge as it maintains itself best around there.

Op, i dont think its possible to permantely disable the battery charging, only untill you shut it down. I just use the dell battery program to turn off charging on every boot, it is annoying but havent found any other way to do it.

Yeah that's what I do atm, I have to boot into the BIOS before I startup.

I saw ye talking about it in the L702x thread and from the way ye were talking I assumed it was a permanent switch for ye, obviously not :(

BIOS modding is the way forward :p
    Thanks for the help guys.

Same type of problem with the keyboard lighting, I would love for the lighting to be persistent. Every time it is set to "never off" in the windows mobility center, it loses its setting and turns off after a restart or resume from sleep.

My keyboard's backlight has been on since I first turned it on, on the first day.
I have no options in the BIOS about the backlight, or the keyboard for that matter.

Maybe try uninstall Quickset, reboot and install it again. See does it help.

The combo for backlighting is FN+F6. It doesnt stay put, but once you turn it off it will stay off for the session.

I have no issue with mine I was just replying to simmyrit.

I switched on my backlight weeks ago and it's been on constantly since then.
I don't have to switch it on at all as it comes on itself on startup
