Just trying to figure out how many other owners upgraded to 16gb of memory without (or with) any problems.

If you are running 16gb, how long have you had it in there for?

My L702x just died out of nowhere and I'm thinking it's the motherboard, but also suspicious of my exceeding the stated 8gb maximum. I did the upgrade about 1 month ago and never had a problem until now.

But if the memory caused the problem, wouldn't it have happened much sooner than 30 days later?

Been running 16gb in my L502x for about 3 months straight no issues. Plus I doubt memory would have been the cause for your motherboard dying.

If you install more RAM than your system can handle, then I believe it becomes a 50/50 toss up:
    1) the computer refuses to boot (will probably spew some error about MEM)
    2) it only sees and uses the max amount it's said to handle

If you were able to run at 16GB without any problems (until a month later), then I doubt it was because of the excess memory.

That said, it could be that one of your memory sticks is faulty/damaged. It wouldn't actually kill hte motherboard itself, but it would cause all kinds of problems.

Have you tried running the system with only 1x8GB stick of RAM?
