The chip supports raid - as you can see there is many other notebooks with the same chip and raid enabled. the issue here is the firmware
Recently was Intel's referance source code leak - and there was sample code for raid initialization
IMHO The main reason why raid is not enabled - dell's policy to separate XPS from AlienWare
Dell's bioses are one of the most closed proprietary firmware as for now. Asus's and MSI's bioses are much much modification friendly then Dell's

sucks, i rly wanted raid, it would do good with 2 ssd inside , but unfortualy this notebook dell x702x has reached its end , no more new updates, its also scrapped from dell support list, i hoped for raid rly since i have no waranty so nothing to lose, guess i will go msi someday, atleast they have features im looking for like fan controll and raid , the only downside, no tosslink
alienware is fo the rich ppl that dont know what they buy , i just gotten this notebook since it was a sale off and had everything i wanted at that time like usb3.0, tosslink, hdmi, dual hdd/ssd (tobad i didnt look further bcuz i wanted 4 ram slots) waranty was great , at home or at work repair/replace . jbl sound though it sounds crap i dont know jbl could sound bad like this since i have jbl at home and in car and they sounded perfect
all i hope now the one who is doing these bios mods that he will enable raid, send it via pm or something then public if afraid of dell, i wont spoil the fun im just happy if i gotten more functions im looking for -
It's pissible to use a soft raid - it would be almost like hw one
and I think it's poossible to meke a raid version of a firmware - just hardcode raid mode
according to intel's sourcess it can be done - we just need a way to replace core module with a custom one -
@capitankasar.
Thanks for the modded A19 BIOS. I'm now running 8GB ram at 1600MHz CAS9. GPU running at 700core/1000mem.
Cant' say that the ram makes a big difference but it is a few % faster. Every bit helps! -
hi everyone,
can u help me to set these?
i can't find just the long lines settigs:
i have
Dell XPS 17 (L702X) Processor Intel Core i7-2630QM, RAM 8 Gb 1333 mhz dual channel, Screen 17.3" Full HD 1920x1080, Nvidia GeForce GT 555 3Gb, SSD Samsung 840 PRO 256 GB HDD 500 Gb 7200 rpm , Battery 9 cells, Wireless Intel Centrino N 1030 -
The update worked fine and the BIOS shows more options now. Thanks a lot. Is it safe to enable fast stings? According to an Intel list of known CPU errors, it may result in memory corruption under unspecified circumstances.

-
i hope someone is up for it to make one though that custom module, if not, i might buy a new notebook ,

Hi,
Are there any HONEST links to the moded bios's at all as they all seem to want me to download bloatware before allowing me to download the actual product and im very very wary of bloatware/spyware/crud??? If i get the originals i could host them myself with my box account. -

as for download the bioses, when you click on the download links, you will be linked to an ads site, wait 5 secs and click on the top right corner "skip ads" or something like that.
you will be now on mediafire, just click download on the file and enjoy the modded bioses -
any news for raid in bios yet ?

I could use a little help im trying to install linux mint 15 (olivia) an have come to the conclusion that my dell xps702x is using a uefi bios this is the original bios that came on my laptop will this updated bios enable me to disable the uefi function and if so can someone please give me the link to download it?
-
Which bios version are you using? The only UEFI capable version is A19, and I doubt that is the issue with installing Mint. I have win7 installed (pre A19) and after bios update to A19 I have the same non uefi windows I had before. Just to be sure you can downgrade to A18.
-
I flashed to the modded A19 bios without the gpu video bios mods but now I just upgraded to 2960xm (what a steal) and I feel the GPU holding me back (I'm at 770/1080) and I want to use the other modded A19 bios with the extra gpu voltage. My question is do I have to flash back to the default A19 bios first, then flash to the extra gpu voltage A19 bios (remember I have the non extra gpu voltage A19 modded bios.) I also came here to thank you capitankasar for your valiant efforts along with the others regarding this unlocked bios (he doesn't even own one lol.)
-
@XxAiRbOrNxX
hehe, thanks a lot ^^
well relating your question, you can flash directly your desired version.
original bios and modded bios are almost the same with some minor changes wich make cool stuff.
yeah, sadly I dont own a L702X , but the BIOS estructure was almost identical to the L502X BIOS, that why it was so easy to replicate the mods I did on L502X to the L702X
and it seems it worked fine for the L702X users, say also thx to the BIOS-mods team wich made the most of the research of the new UEFI based bioses -
i dont even use uefi, dont even know how to use it , and whats the point in using youre mouse or keyboard,
-
there is an option at the modded bios wich says "uefi boot", you can enable or disable it safetly
this is a capture from a L502X modded bios, but I am pretty sure this menu is identical with the L702X one
this basically allow you to boot efi files at startup from a usb stick or install the OS in uefi mode.
-
that option i know from bios, just not how to use it, anyways , is there waway to disable the intel gma 3k ? its ign anoying and making my notebook slow , i use the advanced unlocked a19 bios, but cant find theoption to diable
-

There's no way to disable it unless you had a 3D model.

Exactly. And if you were to install a 3D panel on a regular revision of the laptop out doesn't change anything since the actual motherboard is different.

i have the 900p ver but wit ha non 3d 1080p in it , i guess i did a wrong purcase but then again it took me 2 years to
sucks, ohwel guess its time to search for a new notebook, what one do you guys recommer ? i want a smaller one but with a dedicated gpu like the xps 17 l702x, and having an unlocked bios w/ raid options and more -
I have a problem with a driver. And also my FAN is always running did not install any other FAN its the standard stock Dell FAN
In the Device Manager under Network Adapters there is a Section Other Devices and in the section is a Unknown device.
I'm currently running Windows 7 Pro 64bit
and my Bios is on A12, 2011/07/22
Any help will be appreciated very much. -
Thanks for your efforts
Questions for @capitankasar :
Does Your Recvery disc method that you made for your L502 Work for our L702x as well, or do I need a Disc image made specifically for my L702x? If a specific recovery disc image for the L702x is needed Would you be able/ or /willing to make one for Me?
Also can anything be done for allowing CPU OC'ing or does the modded bios already afford us this?
Again Thank You For your Superb Effort in this -
@phatboyj420
I made two versions, one for L502X and other for the L702X
L502X works fine with only a stand alone CDrom
not sure if the L702X needs a storage usb stick plugged at the usb/esata combo with the BIOS.cap file on it plus the cdrom to make it works.
but yeah, you need the correct cdrom image, if you try to recovery a l702x with a l502x recovery cdrom or viceversa, you will have a brick for sure.
so yes, you need the correct cdrom.
as for CPU overclocking, I made some researchs after some of firmware and hardware stuff work.
I unlocked the BCLK overclocking for the L502X via a custom ME firmware patch.
you have the instructions about how to flash it for the L502X.
however, no one made it yet for the L702X since this needs some hardware stuff like a bios chip external programer (can be easly done, I posted instructions about building your own functional one)
basically the process to get BCLK overclocking is
- remove the bios chip phisically from the motherboard.
- attach it to the bios programer and dump/backup the contents.
- use a hex editor to unlock the descriptor settings , allowing software read/write of the whole chip with the own laptop itself.
- flash the modded chip image to the chip
- put the chip back to the motherboard (if you want to program the chip several times, you can use sockets on both programer and motherboard sides, this remove the need of the soldering after the socket install and make things way faster)
- after the chip is connected, test the machine boots normally and boot the OS.
- you will able now to dump the whole ME firmware from the chip using some software tools
- mod the ME image
- flash your modded ME image.
- now it will have BCLK overclocking.
I can help you with the whole process and I can make a working patch for you, however I need you mod your laptop so you can read and write whole chip dumps like I did on mine.
I would be able to work with your dump and mod it to support BCLK overclocking.
I know this is too much stuff, but well, I didnt found any other way to get it working ^^
as far I know I am the only one with a L502X with unlocked descriptor and BCLK overclocking because people doesnt want to mess with the bios chip.
so your choice -
Thanks for response
Can You link me to your l702x Recovery disc image
I would definitely do the hardware mods required for bsclk but I'm not so good with an iron -
@phatboyj420
yeah, sure, here you have the interesting links for the L702X

remember you may also need a usb stick with the BIOS.cap file wich can be found inside the recovery cdrom
then copy that file in the root of the usb stick and ensure it is plugged at the usb/esata port with the cdrom also inside when performing the recovery.Hood Robin likes this. -
Is it possible to create a undervolted VBIOS for the GT 555M in L702X? In the first post of this thread it says "Coming Soon", but it never appears ...
-
Alright so I have update to the A.19 Modded Bios and it seems to be working well. The only thing I have changed was the turbo mode power limit lock, which I disabled. I'm not to familiar with all the other setting and was wondering if anyone had created a guide or can explain what some of the setting. Ideally I would like to disable all the power saving functions so that I can run the CPU at the speed it was designed to. I haven't upgraded to the 1600mhz memory yet but I plan to. I also have a new AU Optronic B173HW01 V4 panel on the way. This should max out this system till I'm ready for a new one.

guys, i think overclocking the gpu is worthless, i just found out i mean the gpu wont do more then it can so ppl told me
i play tera on high settings and it only use 79% of gpu here some screenshots of total load, o btw i think hw info is wrong of cpu load, look in the taskbar there is the real cpu load icon
how can i get games to use my full gpu ?Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -
Hi,
I have l702x with modded a18 bios.
Trying to change memory speed to 1600, system doesnt work. Second boot - keyboard light on, LCD black, no reaction after F2, F12.
Is there an emergency procedure in modded bioses? Power on with delete or something like that?
I have a Winbond Biosa chip - how to reset bios to defaults phisically? -
@marcin_s3
yup, you will need the BIOS recovery cd

some users said it doenst work only using the cdrom, so you may have to also insert a usb stick with the BIOS.cap file wich can be found inside the recovery cdrom
then copy that file in the root of the usb stick and ensure it is plugged at the usb/esata port with the cdrom also inside when performing the recovery.[/QUOTE] -
hmmm...
The brick (my l702x) don't display dell splash screen, and i cannot hiyt F12. Pressing F12 after power on my brick does... nothing.
I'it is possible to reset bios to detault setting by short circuit something on winbond chip?
I have NBD warranty. If the serviceman replace mobo, they can check bios version (modded one for me) and... they cancel my warranty. So i woluld like to replace modded bios by original one.
PS. Sorry for my english :\ -
@marcin_s3
i know you cant boot your machine.
however, the following procedure explains how to boot the machine without using the power button by using the END key plus a power plug trick
the recovery method reset settings bios to defaults , so you dont need to reflash
just follow this steps
1 use another computer download this L702X BIOS cap file and extract the BIOS.cap file
2 pick a usb stick, and place the file at the root folder
3 turn off your bricked L702X laptop and put the usb stick iat the usb esataport from the right
4 unplug the power cord, and press end button.
5 plug the power cable, and then you relase the end button fast (less than a second after you plug the cable). (the machine should start automatically without push the power button)
6 this will boot a backup bios from the usb stick, once the bios boot, turn off the machine and boot it normally, the default values should run at this time
plz, let me know if this works for you
-
I give up for today - this piece of ..... art, my l702x is totally dismantled for now.
Tomorrow i'll try to bring it back to life
Thanks in advance.
Will you be online tomorrow?
PS. end button trick works for l702x too? -
@marcin_s3
well, on older machines, clear bios settings included password were as easy as remove the CMOS battery, however in newer UEFI one, is more hard to clear settings, specially the passwords, wich remain even after reset things to default.
but like I said, you dont need to take appart the machine to reset the values to default.
if you want to do more advanced bios mods like enable BCLK overclocking, you can install a socket, dump the bios chip contents using a programmer and mod the image. (I did that on my L502X)
however that involves soldering , ordering some cheap but required electronic parts from online stores, and build custom stuff.
if you like modding, you will love that.
well, anyway for now , you need to make your unit back to life again.
and for that you need to do the usb stick trick + the recovery boot special keys secuence.
tomorrow, I will be online very little time, I usually love to do some social life on the weekends , so I will not have much access to my computer in that time.
anyway, with the steps I told you, you should be able to get it back to life
I will also reply any other post ASAP when I check my machine ^^ -
Yeeees!!!!!!!!!!
It lives!!!!!
Thank you for your assistancecapitankasar likes this. -
@marcin_s3
glad to know it worked for you and you have your machine back into working condition
the recovery option is great not only for boot a backup temporal bios and reflash from a bad flash, it also work to restore bad or incompatible values from the setup config -
hi capitankasar, thank you very much i have unlocked menu A19 advanced bios but please tell me how to increase performance in advanced menu bios my CPU and GPU
-
@Gamkutopolowk
mmm, just enable fast strings in cpu advanced options menu
ensure turboboost is enabled, and the other stuff are configuration in windows and nvidia software -
well fastt strings doesnt work here it only slows down the cpu instead, anyway is there a posibility to overclock the cpu ? bcuz i wanna get max use of everything
-
@WesleyNL
its really weird you get lower cpu score with fast strings on, many people get more windows score with the setting enabled, specially on integrated graphics.
about cpu overclocking, you can spent huge ammount of money on a extreme CPU with unlocked multiplier.
you can also unlock BCLK overclocking like I did on the L502X, I am pretty sure the procedure is almost the same one.
however it need hardware modding and buy some cheap parts since it require to build a hardware programmer, dump and flash the chip externally since the machine have a locked descriptor.
you have more details of BCLK overclocking on my L502X bios modding thread on my signature.
if you feel like you want to give it a try, I will help you.
however, dont expect to archive very high OCs with BCLK , highest stable for more people is like 105 mhz from the base 100 mhz -
ok well thats not for me then , sounds to complicated, also in bios i cant oc this cpu, there is no multiplier setting or mhz to oc , not even gpu settings can be changed to let it tun a lilbit beter, and i rly dont care fori intel graphics, i rather turn it off , its only a bother, i dont rly wanna mess with the mobo, if i break it i have no computer anymore
-
well, in my case I didnt had another computer arround, however I feel crazy sometimes with my modding hoobie and I rush into crazy projects sometimes, I must be lucky since my rate of success increased
well, its ok, the xps machines are good for most of stuff, most demanding games can be too much for this laptop, but well, the ages dont forgive anyone, people or laptops, they all end being old some day ^^
in my case I will stick to me XPS machine until I get some money again and I find a laptop I really like as much as me l502X is -
well thing is, i mostly scrwe up the solder points on the boards, so yeah i rather dont want to mess with removing the bios, ofc i like to take a risk of adding aditional usb ports from what ive seen on your gui , i rly can use that , but bios no i rather let it do by an skiller person like you, also sweet i now can control manual the fan w/ speedfan damn the stock settings are anoying, also what i dont get why add an sepparate bluetooth dongle ? i mean if you swap your wifi with one what have a bluetooth on it then you didnt had to add a separate one
-
@WesleyNL
well, replacing the wifi module with a wifi + bluetooth module cost money, and I preffered to use an old and unused bluetooth adapter over my house, mod it, and install it on a unused usb port inside the machine
I can also allways replace the bluetooth adapter with any other usb device like a IR mouse receiver, usb tv, etc, a internal usb port is allways great for add stuff -
well i have 2x usb 2.0 and 2x 3.0 though, i dont have a wwan installed, and i beleve the wwan is usb 2.0 to
what i would have liken is a pwm function for the fan, this 3 step is just wierd
tsk the fan is still 3 step with speedfan off, on 30% mid, 70% high and thats all it doesnt go stepwise -.-
was worth a try
alsoi thought about trying out the bios stuff, but thing is, idotn know any shops near me that sell these kind of things, and i dont want to wait weeks for it , i live in the netherlands and via google i couldnt find any store that sell them , i rly want to make full use of my notebook,
also about bios chip, are they the same for 702 and 502 ?
will raid also be enabled ?
fan functions changable ?
and waht kind of mods are there possible except the once you listed ? -
Hey, I'm kind of a newb when it comes to Windows BIOS. I've never messed around with it before. Lately, the my XPS17 l702x has been having some really bad performance issues when it comes to gaming (I only play League of Legends and Diablo 3) and even just running multiple programs such as skype, itunes, and programs like Vegas/Photoshop which I use for work. I'm going to try and clean my gpu, cpu, and fan and replace thermal paste and all that, but my friend also recommended me to update my BIOS. Right now I'm running Bios version A14. Would upgrading to A19 actually help alleviate these performance issues? And should I use the modded version to get the most out of it? Thanks..
