dell has not addressed this when i ask for a fix, it literally goes ignored or they say their systems are down so they cant acess my account to add it to the notes and get back to me...
anyways..
i can not be the only one that experiences this..
I have gone through almost every combo as far as power management, using either card, on or off battery and the only time i have a problem is when I am off the power cord/on battery in any battery power plan, @ 60 hz
I have the 550 video card with the intel too...2630 qm i7 i believe...
mmm 4 gig ram, can really think of anything that is neccesary to report, clearly i am a new poster here.. please help ...i assume..yes i assume some one else has this problem and fixed it or will say "you cant fix it" "that's normal" and then hopefully explain why...
i have numerous minor problems, already returned first laptop after 1st day because of improperly set keyboard... among other problems...
the new laptop has the screeen flicker/vibrating cd/dvd rom... loud... came with scuff marks to the right of the touch pad... no big deal aesthetically just piled all problems together i begin to feel stupid for buying this...
has 2 year advanced protection thankfully... I figure the 21 days wouldnt start until i get a 100% working laptop... but it seems I have to even debate this with the dell rep i have... clearly i'm not happy but i am also very reasonable... :/ help me not feel so stupid here... maybe it's a personal problem... i doubt it..

I don't have any flicker at all and the disc drive works fine. This is your second laptop??
Sounds to me like you will have to patiently wade through tech support and if they can't figure it out, send you a new/refurb one. Hopefully the warranty/service plan you purchased will cover what you need.
Good Luck... -
I hooked up my laptop to an older dell monitor and it flickers at 60Hz but when I lower the resolution a bit it gives me the option to change to 75Hz which works perfect.
-
Thanks you very much, is there anyone else that has the same issue and or has some sort of resolve?
-
Bottom line - you need to have them replace your system, again. You should NOT see any of the symptoms you are seeing, and don't be nice like I was. Be firm, loud, and make sure they give you the laptop experience you paid for. -
just received third replacement, the new one still has same flicker problem on battery power, non custom power settings, at 60hz refresh rate...
sigh -
P.S. I keep my graphics set to Integrated - not a gamer - did not evaluate anything on NVidia. -
it's a bit odd though because i did this before with the previous system..actually the lady did it remotely and the flicker was still there after reboot.... never the less, THANK YOU! -
I'm having the issue with Nvidia 555 and 3D screen so will phone up for a replacement.
-
Wow.. received mine yesterday, with the NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics with Optimus.
Same flicking problems. Noticed it on the first day. I will call them today.
Any of you found a solution?
Thanks -
what sort of flickering... is this happening all the time? Finding it a bit hard to understand
is it constant? does it just happen when using a specific graphics card? does this happen at a specific point once/for a short amount of time (e.g. booting a game) or is this a constant "flickering" like sitting too close to a CRT tv?
if it's happening when using a specific graphics card then try using a range of different drivers for that graphics card to see if this fixes the issue (start with the official dell ones, updated from the support site)
if it's happening all the time then it may be an issue with the intel graphics as, when the nvidia card is active it basically passes info to the intel card which outputs it to the screen or a problem with the screen/backlight itself.
LCD screens shouldn't have that CRT type "flicker" even at 60hz as the backlight is constant, unlike things like plasma screens. -
I am having the same exact flashing issue on my new xps 17. I just noticed it today for the first time when I put it on battery power. It seem quite random, happening mostly I am not typing anything. I have only had this computer for less than 3 weeks and it has already had a hard drive failure I actually had to get the dell technician to reinstall the Nvidia driver that originally came with this computer.
Should I uninstall the Nvidia driver and go with the older intel driver. What am I losing by doing in terms of performance? I am not a gamer, however being a web developer, I do a bit of work with photoshop, and that was the reason for purchasing the full HD screen. -
Installed my new SSD and did a clean Win7 HP install. But of indulgence to fit the SSDs, but I love the silence and low power not firing the fan up too much.
Installed all the Dell drivers. Everything fine, including battery operation, no screen flashes... I think, since I cannot remember operating on battery too much.
Updated the NVidia driver (from NVidia) to 285.62 ready for gaming...., updated the Intel Graphics driver from the Intel Download Center to latest 8.15.10.2509 (5/9/2011 or 9/5/2011, US date).
When on battery, screen now flashes when I stop typing or moving mouse after a few seconds? Wait some more seconds, further flashes? Move mouse after waiting, another flash. Deeply frustrating and cannot work on battery really. Occasionally, loose the screen altogether and it's totally black? Needed to press the power switch to Sleep and back on to get the screen back?
Spent several hours reviewing battery, power saving options, then BIOS options. Read the forums, Google searches, etc.
This thread did not really answer the question definitively? But there may be several issues, not just my experience.....
Finally, I decided to reinstall the older Dell site Intel Graphics driver (8.15.10.2321, A05) dated 21/3/2011 (3/21/2011 US). R299700.exe.
Installed this, accepting the warning that I am overwriting newer drivers.
Everything fine, no screen flashing. Frustration stopped!
So that's the fix that worked for me. XPS Spec. below.
Dell XPS L702x | 8GB, i7-2630QM | NVidia GT 555M 3Gb | CMO1720 1920x1080 WLED AG | Crucial M4 256Gb+512Gb SSD | WiFi Intel 1030 | DVDRWBD CT30N | 9-cell battery | BIOS A12 | Win7 HP clean install -
i too have a L702x xps 17 that flickers at 60mhz on battery power. at 40mhz it doesnt happen. is that my only option, to install older drivers? would this be a warranty issue?
-
I'm not sure if deflatedme is describing the on-battery "idle" flashing, but Jimbo and NewXpsUser describe what I mentioned months ago. However, I have found newer HD Graphics drivers at Dell site by searching outside the XPS17 section. Battery power doesn't cause flashing with Dell's drivers. I'm currently using 2455 which Dell called A09 in R311294; since they aren't listed for XPS17 please make your own decisions rather than trusting me.
-
What kind of flicker are most of you seeing? Is it regular and cyclic, like flourescent lighting, or is there a slight degree of randomness to it?
-
-
The reason I asked is that I've had a series of bad displays in mine, currently on the fourth, hopefully final, one. The first replacement was a LG brand, and that one had the flickering issue. If was constant, but slightly random, and it happened on AC. I don't even remeber trying it on battery.
They replaced it with a Chi Mei, which had other issues, but didn't flicker. Maybe it's a bad batch of LGs. What's in your replacment, and do you remeber what was in the replacee? -
I installed the Dell OEM Intel HD drivers and that solved the problem.
Too bad we can't use the latest drivers from Intel.
How do I tell which panel I have? -
In device Manager, find Monitors, then double click on Generic PnP Monitor. Click the Details tab in the resultant Properties dialog, then select Hardware IDs from the Properties dropdown list. I can't remember the code for LG any more, but Chi Mei is CMO; the full HD display's code is CMO 1720. At least mine it, there could be others I suppose.
You can google the value you find there to determine the manufacturer. -
Well, sounds like you guys are having luck with older drivers. I just got my computer about 2 weeks ago and am having the issue.
However, it's now Feb and there are no longer old driver on the website that I can find. Can someone send them to me?
My intel drivers are: Intell, Date 7/19/2011. Version 8.15.10.2455
Nvidia: Driver version 269.59 same as dell website: 8.17.12.6959. A09.
Guess I need to go older.
Any assistance would be appreciated. -
Called Dell, they have a new screen and mobo that fixes the problem. They sent me the updated computer (brand new), so they say.
Well, this is day 2 with it and it just started flickering.
Guess it's going back. I didn't pay $2,000 for a flickering screen. -
Ok, now getting pissed. They want to send out a technician with a new motherboard and screen. "We will verify the MOBO works before leaving Dell"
Really? This will be mobo #3 right? 1st computer didn't work, #2 doesn't work. Now we will send number 3.
Total BS. -
Hi,
Try this one it worked for me:
- Dell-IntelHD3000-2559-x64.exe download - 2shared
or
- Download Dell-IntelHD3000-2559-x64.exe from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way -

To fix the screen flickering on a Dell XPS 17, while running on Battery do the following.
Click Start, right click on Computer and choose properties. At the bottom click on
performance Information and Tools. Then click on Adjust power setting. Click on Dell Battery Meter.
Click the settings button and uncheck Enable Intel Display Power Saving Technology.
Click OK.
Then right click on you desktop and select Graphic Properties. Choose Advance Mode. In Advance mode
select Power. From the drop down list at the top right choose battery. Click on Maximum Performance.
Doing this will open another window below the "Maximum Performance selected button" you will see something called Display Power Saving Technology.
Make sure that box is unchecked.
Note the first time I selected maximum performace under the power source in the Interl Graphic and Media Contro Panel
the Power Conservation Feature was not displayed. Simple Choose Maximum performance click apply then ok.
Then go back into the control panel (Right click on desktop and choose graphics properties). Select Advance option
then click on Power and you should see the (Power Conservation Feature) and the Display Power Saving Technology, should be
unchecked.
Enjoy a flicker free XPS -
Thank you pwr1009, These drivers solved problem of flickering..
Thumps Up !
-
Wrote this because you are the first result on google and I couldn't find a fix anywhere until now accidentally, so I'll let everyone know the very simple fix.
The screen flicker is caused by the Intel graphics changing from 60Hz to 40Hz to save power. To stop it flickering, right click the desktop, go to graphics properties, click on Power on the left, change Power Source to On Battery, then uncheck the check box that says Display Refresh Rate Switching, click apply and say bye to that annoying flicker.
Done on driver version 9.17.10.2867 -
-
I would like to confirm that I tried this method on Win 8.1 Pro 64x and it works fine. The flicker is gone!
Thanks a bunch!
