Well, i have asked this question in different threads but still i haven't got a clear answer.

Can an M1330 with a normal LCD Screen upgraded to LED Screen by purchasing the LED Screen separate from Dell?

    Thanks in advance
    Benna

yeah i was wondering as well, but you'll have to buy not only the screen but the lid as well ,a lid that fits the led screen (cause its thinner). by the way where can i buy both at a normal price? eBay? (i cant from dell cause i live in Israel).

Here are the pictures for the teardown of the CCFL and LED displays, taken from the service manual. I also have the complete service manual, but since that is 73.7 MB in size, I figured it'd be easier to to upload just the relevant pictures. In case anyone wants the complete manual, I can create a torrent of that, or upload it to rapidshare...

    http://rapidshare.com/files/128862364/tear.7z.html

From what I can see(Never seen a CCFL in person), it's just a question of getting the right cable. The connectors on the mobo seem identical.

    Right....

Here is the M1330 service manual specifically on how to remove the display and change it with a new one.

Call Dell Spare Parts or just call the phone number for Dell to order separate part if offered.

    Either that, or Ebay.com

Dell doesn't have LED screens available for the M1530 in foreign countries, not sure if its the same with the M1330. So... you have to import it if your truly living in Israel.

The one I was referring to is the DCSE self study manual. It isn't available on the Dell support site, but on the dcse site. Unfortunately I can't give a direct link, since it checks for a login. But if you are a dell customer, you can sign up... I'll upload the torrent later tonight, when I get home...

Just FYI to a few of the posters in this thread, ALL the screens are LCD. The difference is whether they use CCFL or LED backlighting.

I don't think you can exchange LCD <-> LED and that's why:

If you use the Dell configurator for XPS M1330, changing LCD -> LED also switches 2.0 MPixel camera to 0.3 MPixel camera. The cover seems to be slimmer. From this I conclude the LED display won't fit.

Maybe if you change your cover as well.

@ Wolfpup. Everyone here understands that. Rather than saying LED backlit LCD display everytime, it is just referred to an LED screen. Of course, a true LED screen is either an OLED display, or SLED(nowhere on the horizon yet)..

As regards the screens themselves, they are integrated along with the backlight.

@ benna. The Toshiba, which has a hardware id of LCD2306 is generally regarded as the one having best colour reproduction, and no graininess. All the others, (CMO,AUO) suffer from varying degrees of graininess.

I assumed not since people kept saying LCD vs. LED, rather than CCFL vs. LED, or LED screen instead of LED backlight etc.

Interesting if you can just use back the same lid and change the CCFL to LED.. I don't see why it can't be done.. maybe with little mod..

BTW I found 3 items on ebay. Chi Mei GR549, Toshiba RP774 and NRL75-DEWDD11A-unknown

The LED lights wouldn't use an inverter though like florescent needs, so that right there might cause issues, not sure.

I'm pretty sure it's possible to do, but very expensive (don't think it's worth it).

    You need:

    LED back-lit LCD $350 !
    LED display cable $35
LCD Lid for LED screen $45
    Bezel for LED screen $19
    replacement web-cam $??

Check out this site for parts prices:

    http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=category&id=143&subid=154

For the price of these parts you could put it towards a new notebook with LED backlight display built-in.

To answer everyone's question, yes it is completely possible to install an LED-backlit screen on the M1330 in place of a CCFL one. This is because the LCDs used in the M1330 come with integrated inverters for the backlights. All of the wiring is perfectly compatible; I would know because I've actually spent the money and done this myself. (I kept the old CCFL setup just in case because I'm still "under warranty"). I could post a picture of this, but it's pretty unremarkable considering it's exactly like a factory-built system. Whether it's worth it economically, it's probably not, but comparing the two I do notice that the maximum brightness is higher and the battery (9-cell) now lasts 20 minutes longer. I got all the components off eBay, and got all four parts for just over $200. Here's the part numbers for all the components for your reference:

GX172 - LED back lid, black
HT258 - LED back lid, blue
XK075 - LED back lid, red
CM742 - LED back lid, white
(Most back lids come with all the hinges, cables, and antennas you need.)

RW485 - LED front bezel with camera and microphone ports
RW285 - LED front bezel without camera and microphone ports

    RP774 - LED-backlit WXGA LCD, Toshiba
GR549 - LED-backlit WXGA LCD, Chi Mei Optoelectronics
(I don't know about the CMO LCD, but the Toshiba model does not need screws to secure it; there's a set of four pins that the Toshiba LCD fits over and it is held in place by the front bezel.)

    N6704 - 0.3MP camera and dual microphone
(The fit is tight enough that you don't really need to screw it in, but I cannibalized one from the center hinge cover [RW683] to make sure it's secured.)

[Gloat alert] I've also changed the keyboard (NK750) to the black version and now use the new PA-3E AC adapter (WK890), all also found on eBay. I love how Dell parts are all standardized and plentiful :)
