I'm looking at getting my sister a new laptop for graduation and she really likes the looks of the M1330. I've heard about the overheating issues but she's not doing anything close to gaming so (correct me if i'm wrong) this won't be a problem... My question is is the upgrade to the LED display worth the money? Unless there's a big difference she'll probably won't ever know the difference but if it increases battery life noticeably and is extremely noticeably better looking in appearance wise and actual screen appearance wise then I might fork over the $125. thoughts?

I'd say yes, you get better battery life, a brighter screen, and a thinner and lighter laptop.

Sleepy, its not just about overheating. There is a basic flaw in the nVidia 8400M-GS GPU. If you are going to pick up a M1330, if she does not need the higher-end graphics, then just get the X3100 (basic on-board) graphics.

It is, unfortunately, not a matter of 'if' the 8400-equipped M1330 will fail, but when.

As to the LED, love it, love it, love it.

Also, take a look at the outlet M1330s. With the discount and the additional 15% off right now, you can pick up a VERY nice refurb for low dollars. You get a full warranty (and can buy extra if you like) and get a unit that is fully respec'd to full function. My M1330 refurb would have run ~ $1,000 'retail' before tax, through the outlet with the additional 15% off coupon it ran just over $602 after tax. It looks brand new and the Toshiba LED is great looking, light, etc.

I wasn't planning on getting the higher-end graphics card so (once again correct me if i'm wrong) the X3100 will be fine with regard to overheating. and with the regard to the screen the consensus seem to be the led is the way to go for $125 more. Only problem is if i was to get the led I would be about $100 over budget so does the 1330 ever go on sale and if it does how often and how much off is it usually? (she doesn't want a refurb so thats route is out of the question)

In your case, LCD is good enough. 1.5yrs and it's still very bright..

I've read that the LED doesn't last as long as the CCFL. But CCFL tends to have a yellow tinged after awhile. Brighter, thinner screen is a plus and longer battery life but not that much more. The nVidia GPU problem I believe has been resolved since the new GPUs has been corrected.
