I have an XPS m1530 with the built-in webcam along the top of the screen. When running XP Pro on this laptop I can see a USB device called "Laptop Integrated Webcam" in Windows Explorer, and when I click on that device the camera instantly comes up on my screen. This behaviour isn't present in Vista and I was wondering if anyone knew why?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Yeah, it just doesn't appear like that in Vista. It should still show up in Device Manager though. If you need to test it, you need to use it through software that uses the webcam (like Messenger).

Yep, as said above. As long as it is present in the device manager all is good. It will start up as required by the relevant application i.e. skype/messenger.

So it's just the difference in operating systems? One (XP) shows the camera in Explorer and the other (Vista) requires that you use the Webcam software to view the stream? Is that really what it is? Seems odd but I'll accept it if you guys say so.

Well, if the webcam driver was better it should show up in Scanners and Cameras. It's really the software creator's fault rather than Vista's.
