No that's right. If it's new you need to register it. If it's resold then it would be active.

Considering Dell start the warranty the day it ships I can see you having fun and games. If it even arrives and isn't a scam?

Personally I would go collect it so you know you are walking away with it, no meeting in strange places etc. cover your ass :)

Fully agree, it sounds too good to be true. If its an unwanted item he could always return it for the full value so why try sell it cheap on eBay instead?

If you are buying a laptop from an individual person, then the warranty would have started when THEY bought it from Dell, and you would need to transfer ownership. But if you are buying the laptop from a Dell reseller, then the warranty starts when YOU buy it, and the laptop gets registered to YOU.

This seller (Kim's Online Emporium) doesn't look like it's a Dell reseller. They're probably just an individual company that bought the laptop from Dell, and are now reselling it. I'd suspect that they are confused / mistaken about warranty start date / transfer. With any other product you buy (a toaster, a DVD player, a pair of socks), the warranty starts once the package is opened. But with Dell laptops, the warranty starts when the laptop is sold and shipped by Dell.

My guess is that this selleer is confused / mistaken, and that you'd need to transfer ownership once you receive the laptop.

Otherwise, this auction looks legit and safe to me. Here is why:

    * The seller has been on eBay for at least 12 months.
    * The seller has a good reputation: high volume and high satisfaction (almost 400 transactions, 100% positive feedback)
    * The seller has sold other items that are somewhat technology-related (MacBook Pro, SSD, XBox One video games).
    * The seller's current auctions are NOT for high-priced items (they're mostly womens' shoes)
    * The item is being sold at a reasonable discount (about 20% off of full retail from Dell).

So, I'd say that if you were willing to deal with a transfer of ownership, and the potential that the laptop has a few weeks of warranty already used, then I'd say that this is a good deal on this laptop.

A good way to handle this, without offending the seller or telling them they are wrong, would be to play stupid. "Hey, sorry, I'm new to how Dell works. I wanted to ask you, just in case. I'f I'm registering this laptop with Dell for the ownership & warranty, and they ask who I bought this laptop FROM, would you be willing to give me your info? (name, address, email,. phone number)? It looks like Dell asks for that on the Ownership Transfer form. Thanks!"

So as i messaged him requesting his number i wanted to double check things like where he obtained it from and if he did have a receipt for it, if not it wouldn't be a biggie but when i asked would you fill out the transfer form he got annoyed like i was messing him about. So i called him he got defensive.

Im only asking for a back story who knows where its come from if he wont tell me. Because the item description wasnt clear as you can see and this laptop does come with many variations.

So i called him and he got really uptight and said i was messing him about because of my questions. Yes ive offered to drive to him with cash for an extra £100 discount on top of the price. All i want to know is how much warranty and if i did have a hardware issue i call up dell they say its not registered under my name. He thinks because its never been turned on its activated when i turn it on when i get it from him?

That dosent sound weird to you , so now after the telephone conversation he wont sell it to me because im asking completely normal questions

Why would he give you a 100 gbp discount? That's probably more than his profit

@borse2008, I'm sorry, but are you dense? Seriously, this is obviously a scam! Anyone who's unwilling to cooperate, gets so annoyed and becomes aggressive over quite reasonable questions is a scammer. He thinks that you're stupid and you'll swallow the bait, which is not true...otherwise you would have bought it without hesitation. I've known people like that, believe me.

For peace of mind and knowing the laptop isn't stolen and comes with a full money back guarantee and manufacturer warranty I'd much prefer to buy it from either Dell directly or from Amazon because of their no quibble customer service.

Dell will also discount the machine - if you call them and ask for a it, especially if they can see you've been a customer in the past.

No way on earth I'd buy something from some eBay seller who couldn't produce a receipt or a damn good explanation why he's selling the machine in the first place. My spider senses were twitching as I read the posts, he sounds to me like a scammer.
