I have a Dell XPS 15 9550. Sometimes when I shut down my laptop at the end of the day, my laptop won't actually turn off. The display turns black after the Windows 10 shutdown screen, but the laptop is still on. The fans are still running, the screen is still glowing, and the power button is still lit up. Basically, the screen is black, but the computer is still on.

The first time this happened it took about ten minutes for the laptop to finally shut down. The subsequent times it happened I just held down the power button to force the computer to turn off. Believe me, I have waited every time but it doesn't turn off by itself. This issue doesn't always occur, but it often does when I use my laptop after a long day.

This same problem also occurred once each time when I turned on my laptop and when I got out of sleep mode. Both times fans were running, monitor and power button were lit, but the monitor was black. I had to restart my computer several times for it to work. While these events haven't happened again, I still can't shut down my laptop properly.

Does anyone know what's going on and how to fix this problem?

Not until you provide basic information such as event viewer errors around shutdown time?

I looked at event viewer to find a record of these errors. I'm not sure if this is the way you want the data to be shown, so please correct me if I did anything wrong.

Every event had the same details. Though I think when the viewer refers to the computer not shutting down successfully, it was because I forced the computer to shut down each time after waiting for long periods of time.

All they say is it did a dirty reboot, anything else under admin events in the lead up to the reboot?

These three events usually pop up for the times this problem occurs:

The event ID is listed, which labels the problem. Events 41 and 6008 don't seem to be anything big. They both just say that the laptop shut down unexpectedly (because I forced it to shutdown).
I'm not so sure what event 56 is though. The details of it are here:

Maybe this one is the problem?

Another piece of info that might help is that I use throttlestop. The shutdown problem occurs after I turn on throttlestop and game for a while. When I don't use my laptop for gaming and don't turn on throttlestop, it shuts down with no issues. Perhaps I set my voltage too low?

Also sorry for the late response, I've been travelling.

You should try not using throttlestop and seeing if the error occurs, you will soon find out if that is the problem. Kinda an obvious one ;)
