This is a compilation of the latest stable compatible drivers for the StudioXPS 1640/45/47. Not all these packages are posted on Dell’s website for these specific systems, if you have a problem, use the recommended drivers from Dell's support page. At this time I'm focusing only on Windows 7 x64 drivers.

I'm thinking of upgrade the ATI driver, but doesn't the Dell stock option playback via HDMI just fine?

those are for the Precision M6500 and won't work. I found for the audio drivers, only releases for the systems of the Home (Inspiron/Studio/XPS/Alienware) divison are compatible. as such, this file is missing the necessary hardware support for the SXPS and won't even install.

ATI/AMD generic drivers do support HDMI, but it's not bundled with the Mobility specific installation file. To get it, after installing the latest generic Mobility CATALYST driver, go to the download section on AMD's site, select that you have the equivelent desktop version of your Mobility GPU, choose the proper OS, and you'll be taken to the desktop driver section. Download the standard desktop CATALYST driver and it will install the proper HDMI support, even on Mobility GPUs. Currently you have to install both Mobility and Desktop drivers to get full support, repeat each time you upgrade.

may i ask what full support stands for? i merely installed the 10.10 Mobility driver, no Desktop driver, but I have HDMI working (both video and audio) without any problems. i just want to make sure I'm not missing anything. thanks!

If you already have an HDMI driver installed, it will use the old one (but won't update) when you install the latest Mobility driver from AMD. The generic Mobility drivers will only update the display driver, CCC, and installation manager. There's separate packages for Hydrovision and Avivio video codecs.

The HDMI driver for whatever reason isn't being included with the Mobile package, and isn't available separately outside of the desktop driver package that I can tell. The only way to install a fresh copy or update existing installations is to install the desktop CATALYST suite.

Dell's drivers are a bit different, they do bundle the HDMI driver for Mobile cards and there's no need to install any of the desktop software. You'll only have to do that if you're using AMD's generic releases.

Mobility catalyst driver 10.11 drivers are out here ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

They are the first mobility drivers that support OpenCL without modification.

Edit: The package clearly installed the OpenCL drivers, but GPU-Z still tells me that OpenCL is not functional

I don't think the problem is with GPU-Z. On my desktop 5750, with 10.10 or 10.11 drivers it shows OpenCL as working, it's just on my laptop that it doesn't work. Also, even though it installs the OpenCL driver (I know it installed because the SDK is listed in my installed 'programs and features' list), if I go to reinstall the drivers, the CCC installer shows that it's not installed. ?

Got your point. Did you try a clean install like uninstalling ATi stuff then Driver Sweeper??

I will try it in sometime and will update you.

Also in the BIOS section I wanted to put your OC'ed BIOS link or maybe a link to your thread would work?? :)

Haven't done the drive sweeper thing, I'll have to try that out later. If somebody else could chime in if the OpenCL works for them it would be great. Also, you're welcome to post a link to my BIOS OC thread. There's a bunch of different versions floating around on that thread, so posting a link to the thread would work better than posting all the different BIOS versions.

Run GPU-Z. At the bottom there are a lot of check boxes like OpenCL, CUDA, PhysX, etc. If the OpenCL box is checked, then it works.

Same for me then... strange. Maybe they just bundled the OpenCL software in with the CCC, but haven't implemented its use with the mobile chips yet?? Not that it really makes a difference, I don't know any software out that uses OpenCL, but it's kind of annoying that it doesn't work when it should.

Were any of you able to install 10.11?

I had 10.10 installed ok but when I try to extract the download it says something like I cannot download CCC.

I dont remember how I had 10.10 installed using mobility modder but the website says my 5730 is not supported.

i was not able to download the installer file as well. I am assuming you're talking about running the 1.1MB installer pack?

instead, opt to download the full 90MB package.

Got 10.11 installed and OpenCL is not checked according to GPU-Z.

Never thought of OC the GPU (because its a laptop) until this thread and did it today through the AMD GPU clock tool and was running at 750/950 without a problem and a nice noticeable increase in FPS and a comfortable 76C. Thanks!

Does the new "Dell System Software" listed in this thread (installer says it's for the 'new' laptops) provide anything that the old official SXPS 16 one does not?

And seeker, I installed the Catalyst driver and still GPU-Z doesnt detect OpenCL. Not sure where the issue from, Driver side or GPU-Z side?? Maybe GPU-Z doesnt detect the capabilities of a mobility driver yet. I think we should wait for an updated GPU-Z too so we are sure where the issue resides...

Well dont know any program which uses it, so wont bother anyway ;). Curiosity never stops you see :D

it is probably the fault of gpu-z bcause u can use the gpu caps viewer from GPU Caps Viewer 1.9.4 and GPU Shark 0.3.2 with GTX 580 Support

Yep, it works with GPU caps, thanks for the update. Also, OpenCL is great. On the included demos, using the GPU was about 4x faster than the CPU. Now only if there were any real programs that took advantage of it.

Dell's System Software has pre-Service Pack hotfixes and updates NOT posted on Windows Update. There are numerous hotfixes available for Windows 7 that are only available through the Microsoft Knowledge Base, and Windows/OEM hardware manufacture based support. They are available for those who seek them out or have the specific issue, and otherwise through Service Packs when they get released. It's worth installing System Software unless you track and install all the hotfixes manually...

there's around 28 or so of these updates not included on WU: Hotfixes for Windows 7 RTM – aaron-kelley.net

edit: here's what's included in Dell's System Software:

    DELL_SYSTEM-SOFTWARE_A01_R260746.exe
The computer stops responding when an USB device resumes from the USB Selective Suspend state in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
Error message during stress tests on a computer that is running Windows 7 if Driver Verifier is enabled: "Stop 0x00000050"
Stop error when you put a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to sleep or into hibernation, or when you restart the computer: "0x9F"
An update is available for the UDF file system driver (Udfs.sys) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
Some function keys or keyboard shortcuts do not work correctly on a computer that is running Windows 7
A computer may enter sleep or hibernation before the CD or DVD burning process is complete in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
You receive various Stop error messages in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you try to resume a computer that has a large SATA hard disk
USB devices that are connected to a computer may not work after the computer is idle for more than one hour Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

    Dell_System-Software_A02_R274693.exe
    has all the above, plus:
Low performance when you transfer a large file between an external IEEE 1394 device and a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
Stop error on a blue screen when you remove an SD card from a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer: "0x000000D1"
An exclamation mark (!) may be displayed next to the smartcard reader in Device Manager after you start Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
"Stop 0x0000007E" or "Stop 0x00000050" Stop error message in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Are these for the Studio XPS 16s, too? I would think so but I figured I would check. According to Dell's website, they are for...

    Systems
    Inspiron N5030
    XPS L401X
    XPS L501X
    XPS L701X

    from: Drivers and Downloads

    Thanks

It is beneficial for all computers running Windows 7. This particular package was only published for those platforms but Dell doesn't really do a good job at keeping releases current for all systems, even if they are/could be applicable. With prebuilt systems, you're kind of left on your own finding updates and patches - the manfuacture doesn't tend to keep their support pages up to date, or publishing compatible updates very often.

The hotfixes published in Dell's update can all be manually downloaded and installed from Microsoft as well, if you wish. At the very least, it will update the libraries/various portions of the OS, sometimes resulting in other unmentioned bug fixes and performance improvements, and it ensures you won't run into the problem it's intended to correct.
