Hey guys, I am scheduling an appointment to get the motherboard and trackpad of my XPS M1530 replaced. I am having them do it at my work and my boss says its ok as long as they don't take to long. Who has had them do this before and how long did it take? I have heard times as low as 20 mins or as high as two hours. I really hoping that it will only take like a half hour since I feel awkward doing this at work but i need it done.

I cant imagine them taking more than 30 mins. Two hours, those guys musta takena lunch break haha
-
My only thinking was that since it was the motherboard, such a big part of the laptop, it would take longer
-
itll take as long as it takes

The truth is, Dell contracts out all of their on site service, which is the reason for the highly varied time. Some techs will be quick, some will take a long time. They get paid a flat rate though, not hourly, so they don't want to take a long time either!
As a tech myself, I suggest you just let him do his thing with a little bit of privacy. Standing over a person while they do their work is so frustrating to that person and usually kind of just slows down the process.
When he's done check the work before he leaves, but don't constantly harass/question him while he's working (that is, if you want the process to be as quick as possible).
If the tech is knowledgeable, I agree... it should be only about 30 minutes. If he's not, which is possible, he might take longer. If you pressure him though, he'll be more likely to break things :s -
I think it took the Dell guy a little under an hour, maybe around 45 min to replace my motherboard.

i have had a dell rep come to my work about 5 times now, my boss started getting pissed off after 2, he took between 30 min to 1 hour, but makes a mess and completely took over the break room...

I told my boss about 30 to 45 minutes. I am not planning on standing over him at all, because I need to work during that time as I am not a full time employee just a part time(college student). -
paper_wastage Beat this 7x7x7 Cube
my dvd drive died, so got Dell Chat(online) to get a tech...
NBD service on a 4yr warranty+accidental damage...
tech came the next day (yep), took like <15 minutes to unscrew, then 15 minutes to screw back, and was gone.... yay (the dvd drive requires disassembling the display assembly, keyboard, media-touchkeys, palmrest, the two panels at the back, hard drive.... almost everything)
going to predict under an hour if the tech knows what hes doing(my tech knew) since you have to replace the processor, gpu, heat sink, reapply thermal grease...
(i once replaced the display assembly... took me a total of 3 hours to disassemble and reassemble the laptop.... it was fun though) -
It sounds to me like it should not take that long, especially if I get one that has done it multiple times. The only thing I know is that this is one thing you dont want to hurry, because everything hooks into the motherbaord. I wont hurry him but I want it done as fast as he can.

My motherboard replacement took about 40 mins
-
I think it was more like 45 minutes, but he tweaked a few other things for me on my 1530 when he was finished replacing the MBoard
Do you have somewhere he can complete his work..*out of site* per se?
Like a conference room, lunch room, office supply room??

I dont really have anywhere that would be out of site, its a small business. The best I can do is the conference room, which is also my office. I am going to try my best to just keep to my work while he doing it.
Length of time for a tech visit?
