I was thinking that a list with people who got an M17x as a system replacement for the M1730 will be very useful for some of us.
That being said, I want to know what configuration you had before and what you got. Country is also important, so please note this as well.
    Thanks.

I'm guessing you have to have a full warranty to get a replacement?

Also a big factor in my experience is you need to have bought your M1730 direct from Dell and not from a re-seller, mine has a 4 year warranty and my M1730 is just 6 weeks old but from the conversations ive had with Dell in the past it seems i`ll get another M1730 replacement for my faulty M1730.

They have you by the nuts because they class a laptop bought from a re-seller as a refurb so they will replace it with a refurb is what i got told, that doesn`t fill me with confidence now that the M1730 has been discontinued because i can see them scrambling around the factory and throwing together an M1730 as my replacement from any old parts that just happen to be lying around. ;)

You just feel as though you get 2nd hand aftercare if you have bought from a re-seller which isn`t right in my opinion even though you have paid a lot of money for the system and Dell has had good money from the re-seller as i know how much they paid for mine when they offered a refund.

I`m not too bothered about an M17X as i like the style of the M1730, i just want one that works lol ;)

Stig - I bought a refurb 1730 from Dell directly and my AW replacement was new. So I don't think refurb for refurb is really accurate...

What country are you in ? Dell in Different countries may have different policies, ive found Dell Europe very tough to deal with so far.

My M1730 was bought via a Dell re-seller so i didn`t personally buy it direct from Dell but the re-seller did, as you know Dell have many re-sellers that sell their refurbished stock for them.

I don`t mind either way what they replace my laptop with whether its another M1730 or an M17x as long as its new and its relaible, i`ll just have to wait and see what they come up with, apparently they are out of X9000 Extreme processors the girl said when i last spoke to her, she said she will get back to me so its just a waiting game for me really.

I'm curious - why did you choose to go with one 280 when you probably could've gotten 2 260's in SLi? The only reason I ask is that now if you have to get a further system replacement, the lack of SLi could make it more difficult to argue with Dell over their choice in the future...

    Hi Everyone

I am in the same position as most of you with a broken xps m1730 (graphics cards) specs are:

    T9500 2.6Ghz, 4GB RAM, 2 x 200GB HDD, Blu Ray and 8800M GTX in Sli.

Dell have recently offered me an Alienware M 17x, specs are fine however they only want to give me the GTX 260m in sli for the video cards.

I'd much rather get the GTX 280m sli as I belive this is the equivalent replacement, card, but they say the 260m is better than my old card so I should accept that.

Could someone who's got the 280's please give me some advice as to how you managed to convince them to give you that card, I don't think I want to accept the 260's

    Thanks in Advance

I doubt you can justify (with actual performance data) the 260M SLI is less powerful than the 8800M GTX SLI. It is a performance boost. Dell is on track with their specs in this case. IMO, of course.

The only thing you could do is say that the 8800's ended up being the high-grade (or mid-grade) cards of the 1730 and you feel you should have the mid-high grade cards in your replacement since you paid extra for them originally.

But dude - be happy you're getting this thing and don't fret over 260 vs 280 sli. As long as it's SLi, and everything else matches/beats what you have now, quit fussing and get it done before the offer's gone. Plus you'll be able to enjoy this thing that much sooner :)

Well the 260m GTX SLI is better than the 8800m GTX SLI, since 96 shaders vs 112 shaders of the 260m GTX SLI. So yes they offered you better GPU´s than what you had before. 260m GTX SLI = 9800m GTX SLI.

I have had my video cards replaced twice previously and have been waiting since November for them to be replaced again along with the motherbaord.

This morning a DELL representative called to ask if I would like to upgrade my machine.

He told me that the machine I exchange for has to be of equal or more value than the original purchase price and that I can only get 85% against my original purchase price due to depreciation. Therefore I would need to be purchasing something that will incur an additional charge of at least £200. Ok, I can live with that. Just wondered oif anybody else had been offered a similar deal?

    My current specification:

    XPS1730M - Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5Ghz - 4GB RAM - 2 x 400GB Seagate HDD's - 2 x 512 MB 8800M GTX SLI

    Upgrade Specification:

    M17X - Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 620M(2.66GHz,4MB cache) - 8GB DDR 3 RAM - 2 x 500GB HDD's - 1GB ATI® RADEON™ HD 4870 Graphics Card

    I have gone for the standard LCD 17-inch WideXGA+ 1440 x 900

To upgrade to this will cost me an £180 which includes a 3 year advanced warranty as I only just purchased a further 3 years on the XPS.

I am happy with it, in fact it doesn't make much difference to me as y company is paying for it bu does this sound reasonable to you guys?

Also this configuration is with a CD/DVDR. I cannot find any options to upgrade to Blu Ray which the XPS has. Are Blu Ray Drives not available for M17X?

    Cheers

Just been looking at Dell USA. They offer differnet hardware options than here in the UK. We only have one choice for GPU which is the ATI Radeon HD 4870 and one optical drive which is the CD/DVD RW.

Not very good at all! Especially as the XPS I have has Blu Ray. Anybody experience of the ATI Radeon HD 4870?

Edit: I have just asked Dell and they said they can fit the Dual ATI Crossfire for an additional £344

So my question is, do I go for 8GB RAM and Single ATI GPU or 4GB RAM and Dual ATI Cards? The price is approximately the same. But which would benefit me more?

    lol thanks nickbarbs

Wasn't sure which option would be most beneficial. Suppose it is easier to upgrade the RAM at a later date than the GPU?

I see you are in the UK, did you have to specifically request dual ATI's as Dell do not have an option on the UK site.

Do you think what they are offering is a good deal?

    Thanks

So, of course Dell has replaced my system with equal or better components/specs. One thing I must note however, is the Slot-Load DVD Burner I am receiving on the 17x. Talking to tech support they told me to wait until I receive the 17x, call them, and send it back to the depot to get the blu ray installed. Looking at some of the other replacements on here... I am going to try to get the 4870 in Cross-Fire as a replacement for my SLI, and I also plan to ask about the physX card. I will report back when I get results.

    Update:
Just got off the phone with XPS Tech Support, they won't be giving me Cross-Fire as a free upgrade. Oh well, the 4870 should still be better than the two 256 8700GTM's anyways. No luck on the PhysX, but whatever, minor detail. As for Blu-Ray the issue has been escalated and I should be hearing back from them as to if I have to send the 17X back for the install or if they will send a tech to do it onsite.

What did you guys have to do to get the Alienware? I've had a lot of issues with my M1730 since I bought (on my third graphics card now). I'm having a new issue where the graphics card says it's having a problem (windows says the driver loaded but the card had to be stopped), and the only way to get it working again is to REFORMAT AND LOAD WINDOWS AGAIN. I think I've reformatted about 10 times in the last couple of weeks. Finally figured out that it only happens when I run in SLi so I haven't enabled it in a while.

When I first called Dell about this they gave me the run around and tried to charge me over $200 in order to see if it could be caused by a virus. I told them I wouldn't pay that and sent an escalation email. That guy and I played phone tag for a while but couldn't get a hold of each other.. he also hasn't responded to my email :(
