Hi guys/girls. Have just sold my m1710. Thinking of buying M1730. Just wanted to hear off some people what are they like to live with long term? Problems, reliability, Gaming. I will probably be buying at the more base entery level.

you should go for a base alienware if you can afford it apparently alot of problems with the 1730's from what i've read here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=426693

or get the SXPS 16 which is awesome but wont compare on gaming depending on your setup you had previously I.e. was it SLI?

if it had a single card id go with what i have a SXPS 16 which has a better GPU than the M1710 which you can configure with a decent price and has core i7 technology but there is a fiasco with the core i7 shipping one person did just receive it tho but if you went with a base alienware you would have a betterGPU just depends on if you want to play modern games at high to really high or med to high

for example i can play L4D completely maxed out but i can play RE5 on highest res with med settings a base alienware im not sure but most likely should be able to play it on highest at max res

but the 4670 in the SXPS 16 is pretty good ranks somewhere between the desktop 4650 and 4670 which is pretty darn good IMO but you gotta way it out how much gaming performance you want and how much you wanna spend
mines is pretty much a maxed out version minus two gigs of ram and core i7 now

if you want single card solutions goto http://www.notebookcheck.net to compare the 4670 to the 260m which i believe is the base single card in the alienware which base is almost double sxps 16

I've had a lot of technical problems with my M1730 over the past 15 months:

2 power supply failures (unrecognised power supply error)
1 GPU failure (2 months of waiting, and I'm finally getting a replacement M17X for it)
    1 LCD monitor failure

When the system works, it does the job very nicely, but a lot of people have had hardware problems with them, especially the graphics cards.

The M1730 is also being phased out, so if you did get one that would probably mean longer delays in getting replacements. If you still want a 17" laptop, I'd go with a base Alienware M17X which is the successor to the system really.

SXPS would be optimal, but I am not too anti-M1730.

    Look at it this way:
You shouldn't have to worry about parts and timing. Why should your machine fail so often? Warranty is supposed to be a last resort. I've bought products where I haven't ever had the need to use warranty. The same should be the case with a laptop, even a gaming laptop.

Now this takes us to the real issue with the M1730. Yes, there's GPU failure problems. Not to mention, if you're gunning for entry-level M1730, then I don't think an Alienware--entry or not--is something you'll be able to get at that price. If you're willing to spend more, then that's a different story.

If you do get the M1730, do get an X9000 CPU and add it to the configuration. It'll help wth stability and make sure your GPUs don't die from the thermal cycling.
