Just curious, all I will mainly be doing on this laptop is playing WoW and Starcraft 2.

Will the laptop be fine running in high/ultra settings with just the core i3?

For $50 should I do the battery upgrade to the 9 cell, or stick with the standard? - I wont be going to mobile with the 15.

If you're not going mobile stick with the 6-cell. Use the $50.00 for a better processor and graphics card. You can't run the aforementioned games at their highest settings using the I3 chip. You'll need an I-7 and the Nvidia 434M 2gb graphics card. You may even need the 17" with the 445m 3gb, to run at an excellent frame rate.

If you want to run at a "playable" high-quality frame rate, the I3 will work fine, but don't expect miraculous performance. The processing power is just not going to be there.

If you wait for the Sandy Bridge processors you may get by with an i5, so I'm told.

The i3/420m will probably struggle with SC2 on ultra. As others have said, your best bet is to wait for the Sandy Bridge refresh :D Clock for clock, SB is much faster (and consumes less power) than the first generation i7's.
