It's just keeping it cool! Nothing to worry about.
Also happens when turbo boost is activated, use max turbo and you'll get max fan.

I tried using speedfan but it crashed my system twice.

If you keep it cool enough ie. notebook cooler then the fan will only ever go on if you turbo boost!

Try the turbo boost monitoring gadget from the chipset drivers on Dell drivers site. That'll tell you when turbo boost is activated.

yes, this is normal . 1647 runs much cooler than old 1640s.
actaully all the gaming laptop used to have fans runing like this loud and fast. the quiet and hot runing 1640s was abnormal, more of an apple clone.

I'm also annoyed by the cycling fan.

Since I have SSD my laptop is 100% silent for some time (when idling/web surfing) but after a few minutes the fan kicks in and it's terrible (well not really noticeable during usual day work, but in the middle of the night especially when there is a person sleeping beside you so that you're trying to be silent it's just unbearable)
I already wrote Bill@Dell a PM, asking for adjusting fan RPM from 3000RPM (1st level) to about 1500RPM which would make it nearly silent and still capable to cool the laptop down during light tasks...but he asked engineers and from the last message he sent it looks like they are NOT going to adjust the fan RPM... :-(

Yeah it can be annoying at night. I would prefer having a fan that runs quietly constantly rather than one that makes a lot of noise for a few seconds every minute.

Seems like everyone would want this, so it's no surprise Dell won't make it happen ;)

I think it's sad, really...such a little tweak would make many owners happier, but they don't listen...

Maybe anybody around is experienced enough to try to mod the bios?

Why doesn't dell (and other manufacturers too) allow for software adjustment for the fan? Let's say as long as temperatures are within a low range? On desktop it's common to use software utilities to control fan RPM...
