I think the title says it all.... the backlight worked earlier today, I put the laptop into hibernate and now it's dead.

Took me a while to figure out it's just the backlight and not the screen or the whole laptop.

I can't find any mention of this and it really, really pisses me off (laptop is 3 months old!)

    Any advice?

    Thanks..

Call Dell. We had a brand new Vostro do this in the office last week. At first we and the Engineer thought it was the backlight but it turned out to be the motherboard.

It's as good as new now.

You should also try force shutting down and booting it back up. It could be that its just taking a while to wake back up.

Can you still see a picture on the screen if you shined a light at it? How are you positive that the backlight is dead?

Try to connect external VGA monitor or HDMI tv/monitor.

    Most likely
If external monitor works then LCD or LED back light problem.
If external monitor did not work then motherboard problem.

It is still under warranty so call Dell.

I had this problem a while back with my original system, try playing around with it because I connected it to a TV via HDMI and then removed it and the picture would not come back to the screen at all. After pressing a bunch of buttons and force shut down and stuff I finally got the video switched back to the laptop.

I'm positive it's the backlight - if you shine a light you can see the monitor is on, just very very dim.
Right now I'm working with an external monitor (CRT!), but it's no real solution...

Shutting it down/forcing shutdown/running PSA - tried everything, nothing worked.

    3 months old laptop!!!

Our Vostro did that. Faulty motherboard. Call Dell. :)
