At the very least you will need new thermal pads.

bought a copper shim and have some AS5 ready to go, along with a T8100 CPU. The mobo arrives today so I'll let you know how the transplant goes

my mobo hasn't shown up yet. very angry about that. bought it from a guy on ebay, brand new, said on ebay post would ship 2-3 day priority mail, but hs shipped dhl ground, its been 13 days. and dhl said it won't arrive till next Tuesday. needless to say, i have already dissassembled my M1330, I have the copper shim, I even have a heatsink (supposedly the integrated mobo heatsink is slightly different from the nvidia one, so i spent $50 on that too). Will do the reassembly as soon as the mobo arrives at my door. I will also inform you if the two heatsinks are actually different (looks like the screw at the end of the heatsink is aligned differently maybe on the website (parts-people) but the image is too small to be certain. oh well, either way i'll sell the other heatsink and the original mobo on ebay for a few bucks (or maybe will hang onto it in case of laptop failure?)

thanks, I'm pretty sure this won't be a big deal. i've already successfully disassembled everything, from the media control panel to the kayboard, to the lcd screen, to the palm rest, the whole notebook is in pieces. if i can take it apart without incident, putting it all back together with new mobo won't be that bad. Plus, i will have two heatsinks to compare, and will be able to tell others with certainty if they need a new heatsink.

this is also good practice for me, b/c if dell upgrades the gpu to the 9400, and all the internals stay the same with the exception of the mobo, i will be able to do another transplant down the road.

how much does the mobo cost if you want to buy it from Dell? The Southbridge whine annoys me (the cpu is relatively much quieter)

well my motherboard FINALLY arrived today in the mail (took 14 days to get here even though the guy posted on his auction he would ship priority mail he chose GROUND shipping). I was so exceited, my notebook has been lying around in pieces. I started to reassemble the notebook, put everything together, and then after installing the new mobo, realized, he SENT ME A MOBO WITH INTEGRATED GFX AND NO 8400 GPU! even though his post specified it was the mobo with the NVIDIA chipset. so naturally I'm looking for a full refund (we'll see). meanwhile, I just bought another mobo that should arrive sometime thursday or friday. We shall see, i wait with baited breath.

Ok, got my new mobo installed with the heatsink (A04 mobo). everything is running fine, reinstalling VISTA 64 Ultimate right now. the fan sounds a little whiny so i will probably swap out the fan from my original heatsink. also did the copper mod (thanks!). all in all, spent $170 to upgrade my notebook (mobo and heatsink and copper shim). Will definitely hang onto my original mobo in case of failure though!
