After reading some of the instructions in another thread, I decided that I'd write up a simpler guide with links to everything I used to get the M1330 running just swell with Vista.

Here is the original thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=158277

    Hope this helps!

    Installing:

I downloaded the latest Intel Matrix Storage driver floppy from Intel @ http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...01&DwnldId=14850&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng

When installing Vista, even though the installer already sees the partitions and looks like it will work (if you are installing using the default BIOS configuration with AHCI enabled), you'll get continuous BSOD after the install reboots! To fix this before it even begins, click the "Load Driver" button on the partition selection screen. Use the floppy you created above (I used 7-zip to unpack the driver disk image and copy the files to a USB flash drive, the Vista installer will see USB flash drives for drivers so if you don't have a USB floppy disk drive you are still golden). Once you load the driver you downloaded, Vista install will load it and re-scan the available volumes. At that point, you can select the disk to install Vista on and continue the installation without the dreaded BSOD!

    What I downloaded:

64-bit Drivers from Dell's support pages. Below are the drivers for my M1330:

    1. Audio (Dell R167846 @ http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R167846.EXE)
    2. Bluetooth (Dell R140135 @ http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R140135.EXE)
    3. Broadcom NIC (Dell R161009 @ http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R161009.EXE)
    4. Dell Wireless-N (Dell R151521 @ http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R151521.EXE)
    5. Intel Chipset (Dell R153997 @ http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R153997.EXE)
    6. Ricoh Drivers (Dell R146465 @ http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R146465.EXE)
    7. Dell Quickset (Dell R163853 @ http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R163853.EXE)

Here are the drivers that Dell doesn't provide for x64, but are needed for "full functionality" with one caveat:

    1. Synaptics Touchpad @ http://download.opendrivers.com/showfile.php?file=/input-device/synaptics/v9_2_5_Vis64.exe

NOTE: You can also download this from Synaptics.com if you want, I did not because their download page is, at the time of this writing, under "scheduled maintenance" and not serving downloads. The one in the link does work and is legitimate, however.

    2. UPEK Biometric fingerprint reader @ http://www.upek.com/support/downloads/drivers/windows.asp

NOTE: Link is not a direct download, but that is the page that links directly to the most current UPEK Touchstrip driver. Once you have this driver, you are now prepared for the caveat...

CAVEAT: The UPEK reader requires the UPEK Protector Suite QL to do anything. I gave up trying to find one from Dell that was current and compatible with x64, however you can buy the latest version of Protector Suite from UPEK directly for $14.99 USD. It adds fingerprint support for the entire system, not just Windows login (read: it works with IE, etc). It's unfortunate that Dell doesn't provide this, but whatever. It was cheap enough.

    3. NVIDIA drivers @ http://www.tweakforce.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=86

NOTE: These are drivers similar to the laptop2go drivers but are *significantly* easier to install at the expense of being the absolute most current bleeding-edge drivers. The current drivers available for Vista x64 are 162.62. The nice thing about them are that you just download and install. No dicking with .inf files, no missing control panels, etc. It just works! Like magic!

I hope this helps some of you out. I was able to complete the installation very quickly and my system is running great now!

(I have NOT installed the Intel TurboMemory for x64 thing from Dell's site yet as my HD is the 64GB SSD, so it stands to reason that TurboMemory with an SSD might actually add overhead and impede performance. I am going to run without it for a while first.)

    Good luck! :)

Hey Deacon, what complication will I have since I didn't update the Matrix driver before I installed my copy of Vista 64? Anyone?

I am going to leave that to others... There was talk in the first thread I mentioned. Apparently there's a way out of that sort of bind but I honestly didn't want to dick with it. Many have had success, however.

So far, so good with Vista x64 this morning. No issues yet!

I'm just curious if I need/can update this driver. I had heard some sort of talk about not being able to install Vista w/o out, but everything went smoothly for me.

    Hi,

I am waiting for my XPS m1330 to arrive (this Monday, yay!) and I have been looking around regarding the upgrading to x64 Vista. With the fingerprint reader, the drivers are freely available from the UPEK website but with the software, "Protector Suite QL", could you not download it from one of the other vendors website like IBM/Lenovo?
    (IMB/Lenovo link: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-66948

From my reading elsewhere these work just as well. I shall try it once I get my hands on my laptop and an x64 Vista disk.

    Cheers,
    James

The fingerprint reader does not fully work with any software in 64bit. It will allow you to log o and off the system but that is it.

Ohk, thanks for that. However, according to the UPEK website the "Protector Suite QL" does support Vista. Maybe DeaconBoogie can clear this up for us.

    Cheers,

It does support Vista X86 with full functionality with no additional cost. To gain X64 support, however, it seems you have to buy it from UPEK, unless you want to go the Lenovo login-only route.

So we are saying that there is a fully functional driver for X64 that one must purchase through Lenovo? Ide like to see that if anyone has a link or more info.

I think what he means is that you can download a compatible driver from Lenovo, as they use the same fingerprint reader in some of their laptops, but that driver only contains support for logging into Windows - it doesn't have the full password management application that works with web pages, etc.

At the moment, the only way anyone's found to get that full support on Vista x64 is to buy the (inexpensive) software directly from UPEK.

Thats what i originally stated. I have the driver and, in fact, it was posted on the original post by Trebuin.

I was just trying to explain that all you can do is log on or off. You cannot use it for security as the security measures arent compatible with 64bit.

I was also asking if he had found drivers that were FULLY compatible...

Okay... To clear this UPEK stuff up...

In my original post, I stated that you can buy the UPEK Protector Suite QL for $15 from the UPEK website and gain *full functionality* in Vista x64.

Or, you can download the IBM one and get login/logoff. I felt better actually buying my own version and having everything work as intended. The version I purchased and downloaded is version 6.5.2, the latest from UPEK.

It's only $14.99 and I paid via PayPal and had the software in seconds.

How fully functional is it exactly? Does it only allow you to password protect folders or can you use it to access your password protected websites?

    flamenko,

    Yes and yes!

However, for some reason the versions of PS-QL that I bought for Vista x64 doesn't support Firefox yet. However for IE and other parts of the system that use integrated Windows authentication, it appears to work perfectly well!

You actually don't need to buy it; it is available for free download from a different UPEK TouchChip vendor.

I downloaded the full package, for all versions of Windows, x86 and x64, from a USB-based fingerprint reader vendor.

Unlike the IBM package, it does work for IE and elsewhere around Windows, and has the complete package (size is about 49 MB). Also unlike IBM's package, it has and no annoying IBM-branded icons, titles and videos.

I slipstreamed the .101 driver into it, which can be found at the OP's link above (the 2.8 package.zip).

The version is 5.6.0 build 3326, or something like that.

I have to dig up the link, but if I find it, I'll try to post it.

Now, how to get FireFox working?

Firefox doesn't appear in the list of choices, though it does appear in the help file, as this is the full 50MB package, not the 10 MB package from IBM. From all appearances, it should detect FireFox, but it does not.

DeaconBoogie has done a great job getting some of this information together. I did run into a few problems that I hope can help some others here trying to get Vista 64 working on the M1330.

Broadcom NIC: Get newer ones directly from Broadcom here: http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netxtreme_desktop.php
Note: The drivers directly from Broadcom are newer than Dell's.

    Synaptics Touchpad: http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm
Note: You lose Dell's oh so spiffy blue config tool but all the functionality and more is provided directly by the Synaptics driver

    Intel PM965 Chipset: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-025753.htm
Note: This driver is much newer than the ones provided by Dell support.

    Intel Matrix Storage Manager: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-025753.htm
Note: As mentioned before, you need to grab the floppy version and either make the floppy image and use the image or copy to flash drive and have Vista load the drivers during install. Otherwise you may get the constant reboot with BSOD.

    Intel PRO Wireless 3945 and 4965: http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R171132.EXE
Note: This version and the latest version directly from Intel are the same as of this posting. Driver v11.5.0.32. So you can also get this directly from Intel.

    UPEK Protector Suite QL: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/confirm.aspx?httpDown=http://downloadmirror.intel.com/13165/eng/Fingerprint_Driver.zip&agr=y&ProductID=954&DwnldId=13165&strOSs=All&OSFullName=All%20Operating%20Systems&lang=eng
Note: This is for an Intel Compal notebook but they use the same reader. The suite is v5.6.2.3447. This is the latest from UPEK as of this posting. The included drivers in this download are slightly older than the ones directly from UPEK. I'm using the UPEK direct drivers and the suite from this download.

Ricoh card reader: Use Microsoft Windows Update to grab the drivers. The Dell ones did not work completely for me. The memory stick driver would not load correctly. The Dell drivers are also slightly older than the ones from Microsoft directly. The MS ones seem to be working with no issues.

NVIDIA Geforce 8400M GS: Use Windows update. This seemed to work the best for me. I got all the control panel options and no messing with repackaged drivers.

    Wireless 400 Wireless USB: http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R167729.EXE
Note: Can't seem to find any direct downloads for this driver.

With respect to UPEK, does that include all software as well? Are you able to have complete functionality with this suite such as protecting individual folders and such? The original package just limited you to logging on and off the computer in 64 bit.

    Is this different now?

The link I posted for the UPEK Suite provides more than just login. I have tested File Safe (encrypting folders for yourself or other users) and that works. The one thing that is annoying is that when you unlock an archive UAC kicks in every time.

There is also the password bank function in IE. When you get to a site with a form on it IE will prompt you and you can save all the form information through the UPEK tool. It doesn't seem to support Firefox right now according to their readme.txt. They do support FF in Vista 32 but not Vista 64.

You can also setup a finger to launch an application or to use the strip as a scroll wheel.

I think that's all that the original Dell version provided.

I have issues shutting down if I put the computer into sleep mode. When I wake the machine back up my USB devices are not recognized anymore. I've also seen SuperFetch crash after resuming.

I remember there are some patches that might be required but I can't remember where I found that information. I'm going to keep looking.

It looks like there are still a lot of issues with Vista and Vista 64.

Pertaining to my problem: KB928631, A USB device may no longer work correctly after Windows Vista resumes from sleep or from hibernation.

This patch is an interim hotfix so I cna't just d/l the patch.

I also found the original thread detailing some of the patches that Dell wants applied but do not get automatically applied via Windows Update. The thread title is: Vista 64-bit on XPS M1330 by trebuin

Summary of patches he's dug up:
    - KB927084
    - KB929550
    - KB929577
    - KB940059 (dell’s KB929731 is not available for vista 64 and this is more current)

Unfortunately a lot of those patches are hotfixes as well and have not been regression tested. You can't download them directly. You need to have MS send you a link or something.

I guess I can live without the sleep function :( . The Hibernation seems to work though. I do hear what sounds like USB devices unregistering and registering again when I come out of hibernation.

    http://www.kbytememory.com/pdfs/PSQL56Build3326.zip

is the URL I found for the full suite. UAC does NOT kick in when decrypting a file, though there is no FireFox support, not FireFox nor MineField (x64 version of FireFox).

Note to Moderator: If K-Byte minds the direct downloads, I can supply a link to the download page, instead.

Edit: You can slipstream the newer drivers from UPEK into the install by overwriting the ones in the "DRIVER" and "APPLICATION\X64\TC-DRIVER\X64.VISTA" folders, with the newer ones from UPEK - there are 3 "tcusb" files, a ".sys", a ".cat" and an ".inf".

Strange but on my fresh install UAC does not kick in with the UPEK Protector suite when decrypting archives. Not sure if this has anything to do with SP1 RC1.

Speaking of which, I have also installed the Vista SP1 RC1 and the issues with the sleep are gone. SP1 includes a lot of the hot fixes that are not generally available from Microsoft.

One note though, you may not get all the Vista Ultimate Extras if you have that edition. The Dreamscape Extra checks the version string and RC1 doesn't count so if you want Dreamscape and RC1, install the Dreamscape Extra first.

I would think so. Most of the hardware seems identical. With the M1530 however I don't see some of the options available to the M1330. Does it come with the fingerprint scanner? There also doesn't seem to be the UWB Wireless USB. It seems it should be easier to get it running.

If you try and build a configuration now it's an option in the same area as the Bluetooth. I was confused for a while but you can have both the Bluetooth and UWB wireless USB at the same time. Dell is bundling the internal radio with a Belkin 4 port UWB hub.

Throughput rates are nothing to write home about. They claim 480 mbps but in actuality I'm getting somewhere from 1/4 to 1/2 of the throughput when using the same device on the UWB hub as opposed to plugging it in directly.

Convenience is why I chose to pick this up. I can connect a bunch of components and not have to plug in another cable. Not really sure if it is that important though. Meaning, not sure if I would get this option again, at least not until throughput rates go up.

I've been working with Vista x64 for a while now and I've run into an issue with my Bluetooth.

I'm not sure if it's related to having a Blackberry or not. There are 2 Bluetooth devices for which Vista can't seem to find drivers.

    The hardware IDs are:

The first seems to be some sort of Bluetooth modem while the second seems to be a serial port. Has else anyone run into these?

I'm up and running on Vista 64 on my M1530, and I have not tried to get BT working yet, my only complaint so far, I can't figure out how to get the syntaptics touch pad to scroll up/down left/right, I have the latest driver for vista, but don't see any way to set that functionality.

    john

Just search the forums, the driver I use is the latest Synaptics driver. I have a post somewhere with the direct link in it. Search touchpad vista 64...should bring it up.

I have vista 64-bit up and running now...everything seems to be working fine except the standby/hibernation.

I have tried to hibernate and the screen turns off, the HD works for a bit, and then it just stops....power is on, but the computer is unresponsive...at which point I have to power off by holding down the power button.

The same thing happens when I go into standby mode.

    Any suggestions?

Schmitty, have you applied Vista Service Pack 1 RC1? I documented similar problems as you have reported. There are a huge number of fixes for hibernation, sleep and standby in RC1.

    Murkyl,

I used that exact link when I installed the driver, no side or up/down scrolling that I've found using the pad.

After installing the driver, have you checked to see if it is running? If you go to the Control Panel and then Mouse, there should be a new tab that says Device Settings for the touchpad.

Yes, and the only things I can control are the buttons from that tab.

    Hey all,

Just a quick note to let you know I've just switched successfully to Vista 64bit on my M1530.

I didn't use all the drivers listed above. I used:
    - Intel chipset drivers from Intel.com
    - Wireless 4965agbn drivers from Intel.com (11.5.0.0).
    - Dell R168331 Ricoh Card reader drivers.
    - Dell R167846 Sound drivers.
    - Dell R165116 Webcam drivers.
    - Synaptics 10.1.8 drivers direct from Synaptics site
    - NVidia 169.61 drivers from LaptopVideo2Go (may upgrade as I've seen some odd behaviour in shortcut menus)
    - UPEK drivers (package 2.9 from UPEK site)
    - UPEK Software from Intel site ( http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...All&OSFullName=All Operating Systems&lang=eng)
    - Bluetooth (Windows just installed drivers on its own)
    - Marvell Yukon Ethernet downloaded via Windows Update.

The UPEK software from the Intel site was required to get Windows Login to work with the fingerprint reader. I haven't used any of the other functionality.

Also, regarding the Synaptics drivers... I too don't seem to have any scroll options and scrolling definitely doesn't work. Perhaps I need to try the proper Alps software instead.

I haven't installed any Intel Matrix Storage drivers. I'm unsure whether I need too. I didn't after installing my 32bit Home Premium OS. I didn't have to manually load AHCI drivers during installation either.

I did have one issue during installation. After downloading all the updates from Windows Update. The machine wouldn't boot into Windows. It would get part of the way there and then all activity would stop and the screen would go black. I repaired the installation using the installation disc and it has been fine ever since.

I can't say whether it runs better or not as I've only had it running for a couple of hours :D

This place is full of information about upgrading to 64-bit :)

One question: has anyone been able to make the finger print reader work 100%? Are there any other features that you lose when you update to 64-bit that have no solution as of now? Thanks

I've gotten the finger print reader to allow me to log in to Windows, haven't tried it out on Firefox or other programs tho.

Looks like Intel's download center is down. Can anyone upload the Matrix Storage Driver? I get an error when trying to load the driver before installing Vista. Says "Contact your vendor for an updated driver."
