My M1330 is about a year and a half old.I'm running VISTA.
Today for the first time my laptop shut down out of nowhere. I booted it about 5 times and it would shut down by itself before reaching the welcome. I was finally able to restart my computer and sign in. But now my system is running significnatly slower before this random shutdown my laptop was snappy.
The CPU is at 100% and the sounds coming ot of my laptop are choppy sounding.

Is it possible that I have a virus? I am currently running a virus scan but it will be a long time before it is completed. Maybe my computer is overheating?

It sounds to me like your exhaust vent in the back of your m1330 is covered by a wall of dust on the inside. Dust naturally accumulates on the inner end of the back vent over time. When this happens, the CPU runs hot, but the laptop is unable to disperse heat properly. So the temperature rises, and the CPU may clock down, so everything will be very sluggish when you are using the computer.
