    Hey all,

I have an XPS m1330 with an x3100 intel graphics chipset, and a glossy LCD with a cathode backlight. Does anyone know if it's possible for me to replace the LCD panel with one that's LED backlit and thinner bezel?

I'm not sure if the connectors are different. If the connectors are different, could I get a motherboard with an nvidia chipset?

    Thanks

I think you will basically need to change the entire display assembly if you want to take advantage of the thinner LED screen casing, but you should not need to change anything in the base.

Dunno why you'd even want to get an Nvidia base given the failure rate...

The intel chipset isn't terribly capable...

If you are looking for more GPU power, I would strongly recommend selling the M1330 and buying a new laptop rather than switching to the faulty Nvidia boards. Even a budget machine with HD3000 will have more GPU power than the 8400M.

X3100 can drive WUXGA just fine, not for gaming but that typically isn't what Intel GMA are for. And yes HD 3000 will spank a 8400M GS. Also the newest Ivy Bridge laptops coming out will feature HD 4000, which is 2 x HD 3000 and that will beat the 8600M GT, which is the top chip for the M1330. Point in case, buy a new laptop.

The Linux and Mac drivers for the x3100 aren't really up to snuff. I meant it's not even capable from the perspective of running Pixelmator smoothly in a really basic stuff like compiz-fusion effects in linux and 3D effects in Mac don't work well.

I have a fairly capable desktop computer, so I'm not looking to play games on my laptop. I would just like it to do these basic things. I got a T9300 for it, so it's more than capable for what I need it to do, aside from those problems caused by having an x3100 chipset. It would be much cheaper for me to just get an Nvidia board.

Also, if I got an nvidia board, I'd have a spare laptop board (along with an extra mobile Core 2 CPU from my CPU upgrade). If I got some spare laptop memory and a hard drive (both of which are relatively cheap), since it has HDMI out, I'd have a good setup for a super-quiet HTPC.

I haven't had an issue with X3100 or even GMA 950 running compiz-fusion effects on my Knoppix 6.4.4 boot discs.

Well it's up to you, all the Nvidia boards are ticking timebombs. The M1330 isn't horrible to remove the motherboard, but you will need the Nvidia heatsink.

The connectors are the same. You can readily replace the CCFL display and lid combination with an LED display/lid assembly without having to change anything else.
