go to start >> run >> type "cmd" >> then you type "iata78_enu.exe -a" in DOS (DOS is the black screen that pops up when you type "cmd" in the run screen)... BAM!!! there you go.

A huge thanks for these informations, I was finally able to boot my computer, enabling AHCI mode for HDD, under Windows Vista 32 bits, on a Dell Vostro 1700, choosing the same option as for the Dell XPS mentionned in the original post.

    You rock guys !

    Guys,

Is this in anyway related to fixing the problem of 'USB root hub driver not found' error in Windows XP?

No, this only concerns the harddisk.

I had the "USB root hub" problem and ended up reinstalling XP again. Did you by any chance install the chipset driver from a USB drive, thats when i got the problem. Reinstalled XP and burnt drivers on CD on other PC :)

Thanks for reply...I will try with XP reinstallation.....Should I need to install the drivers in the same order as mentioned in the following thread-

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=165176

I am also having the Vista as dual boot...Will installing the '1520_A03 Inspiron 1520 System BIOS' in XP OS affect to Vista OS?

this didn't work out for me .. Windows Vista (didnt try it in WinXP yet) is saying that the latest driver already is installed ..
is it a good idea to uninstall the driver fist? seems like a scary idea for your sata controller :s

You're missing the point. This guide is for WinXP only.

The reason that it does not apply to Windows Vista is because you don't need to jump through the lengthy steps to get AHCI working in Vista... Vista is much friendlier to SATA-based hard drives.

no way friend .. I got the same BSOD in Vista as in XP.

I couldnt install XP with the AHCI setting on .. so I changed it in the bios to AHI. After installing XP, I installed Vista because I wanted to dual boot (actually triple boot with 2 Linux installs as well) but I didnt change the AHI setting to AHCI in the bios so Vista also was installed with the AHI setting. When I now change the bios setting to AHI Vista and XP both give the same BSOD .. I event cant see what it says because it reboots instantly.

Or do I need to enable something in Vista and after that change the bios setting???

You cannot switch modes after an OS has already been installed.

With Vista, you install the SATA (AHCI) drivers during the install process by hitting F6 during Windows Setup. In Vista, you are allowed to install from ANY source... floppy disk, USB drive, burned CD, etc.

With Windows XP, you also hit F6 during the install process. However, Windows XP *REQUIRES* you to install from a floppy disk. Seeing as the M1330 does not have a floppy disk drive, and that most people don't own an external floppy drive, this can be a problem.

The entire purpose of this guide is to allow you to install AHCI drivers in Windows XP without having to go out and buy a floppy disk drive, or slipstreaming the drivers into the install CD.

    HI,

I follow your instruction here in a new Inspiron 1525 with Windows XP Pro 64bit. Under Device Manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, all I can see are a pair of "Primary IDE Channel", a pair of "Secondary IDE Channel", and a pair of "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller". I can't find the "Intel ICH8M 3-port SATA Controller - 2828" or any thing that has Intel in it. I did try the update the driver in each one of these, and can't seem to work. Any idea?

    Thanks

Kent: I think your guide is great and probably the only way for install WinXP (that could work for me...I've tried slipstream WinXP 64 but didn't recognize HD... I don't wanna buy a external floppy).
BTW, I've got a M1330 too but haven't seen "Intel ICHM 3-port SATA Controller" (step 4). I got:
    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    -IDE channel (*)
    -IDE channel
    -IDE Controler
    -Primary IDE Channel
    -Secondary IDE Channel
-Standard dual Channel PCI IDE Controller

Where (*), into "details" box ("Hardware Ids"), I found this info:
    "Intel-2828
    Primary_IDE_Channel
    PNP0600"
    My screenshot:
So, which one is the right one for go ahead with installing and the next steps? It's 3:40 am and I have no idea... I suppose first IDE channel... Just don't wanna mess up the whole HD...
    Thanks in advance

I THINK you got the right one. If you're digging that deep into Hardware ID's, then you're definitely on the right track.

To be honest, I first installed the Intel Matrix drivers in IDE mode... that identified the controllers for me (which is where I found that "2828" controller). After that, I followed the steps in the guide. I can be certain that my steps will work, so if you are looking for a sure thing, the install the drivers in IDE mode before going to SATA.

Thanks for your help, Kent. After frustrations, I was able to install a slipstream (Nlite) Windows on m1330. All worked fine with the iata76_enu.exe driver instead for the newest one (iata78_enu.exe).
Right now I don't need switch my HD and I'm stuck on Dell Media Direct (I installed Windows XP 64-bits at first, but booting failed, I got somethig like "HD is locked"). Anyway, everything seems work with no problems if Windows XP Professional 32 bit is installed.
BTW, I was seeking more info about your "no cd slipstream" way and found this http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62909... It's similar but it didn't work for me either.

I tried the above instructions and it worked perfectly......

Problem is every few days - just randomly I get a nice BLUE SCREEN with the following error.

    STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x89B06908, 0x89B06A7C, 0x805D13B6)

When the laptop is doing NOTHING. I think it happened once when using media direct, but the other times, literally nothing was happening when it gave me BSOD

Can anyone shed any light on how to stop this happening, and whether the above alterations are to blame?

If it was the instructions above, then it would be happening 100% of the time, and not just sporatically.

Best source of info in your situation is to check the Event Viewer, to try and determine what is causing the errors. My guess is that you have a, unstable driver somewhere that is causing the problems.

Thanks. I checked and see no "Red" Events... it's perculiar. Also when I look up the code it's related to AHCI etc, so im thinking it must be something to do with it.

heres what microsoft say about my code - any help?

This problem occurs on a computer in which Windows XP or a later operating system is installed on a hard disk that is configured as a subordinate and no other device is connected to the same IDE controller channel (primary or secondary).

    RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods:• For Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (PATA) hard disks, configure your disk drive as master only. For Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) hard disks, connect the hard disk cable to a master channel SATA connector on the motherboard.
    • Connect another device as a master, such as another disk drive or a CD drive or DVD drive.
    • Change your PATA and SATA IDE cable even if the cable does not appear worn.
    • Install Windows on a new hard disk because it is possible that your hard disk or your Windows installation may be corrupted.

OBVIOUSLY NOT THAT EASY ON A LAPTOP! any clues?

Hi, I seem to be having the same problem with the not being able to see the SATA controller under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers part of the Device Manager. I have provided a screen shot of what I see. Thing is, I have done this method on my laptop (Dell M1530) with no problem at all. I am now trying to do it on a friends laptop and he also has a Dell M1530 only he has the Fujitsu 7600 RPM 160 gig HD while I have the Samsung 320 gig 5600 RPM HD. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not but I am completely stumped on what to do. I have tried re-installing XP on his laptop about 3 times now and still no dice. I have no external USB floppy drive to install the driver with during the XP boot up process. If anyone could help me out on this issue as soon as possible it would be greatly appreciated!

    Edit -

I found by going to the Hardware ID on the Primary IDE Channel (second one in the list) it says Intel-2828 Primary_IDE_Channel *PNP0600. When I hit update driver and point it where the driver is located it does nothing and says that it cannot install the driver.

    That's actually not true.

    In my case I had slipstreamed;

    S:\___\drivers\iaahci\iaAHCI.inf,iaStor_ESB2

    S:\___\drivers\iaahci\iaAHCI.inf,iaAHCI_ICH9MEM
    S:\___\drivers\iaahci\iaAHCI.inf,iaAHCI_ICH9RDODH

for my Windows XP x64 iso, on my Lenovo X300 for seeing the Samsung SSD.

Install went A-OK with BIOS on AHCI (it wouldn't see the SSD without slipstreaming those Intel files), but after install was finished, it would not boot without getting in a BSOD loop. Safe Mode showed me it could still load a lot of drivers until the 0x0000007B Stop Error and immediate reboot.
(Such looks like the error is in the registry..)

When I switched AHCI to Compatibility in BIOS the installed system would boot fine. The OS then asked to install new found hardware.
So actually yes, you CAN switch modes afterwards.

I'd like to know, how do I know the exact driver needed for AHCI?

The pre-installed 32 bit Vista told me it had:
    ICH8M Ultra ATA SC 2850
    and
Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller
    21/06/2006
    6.0.6001.18000

Do you know of any boot-CD tool that is able to tell me what the hardware codes are?

My reply of "You cannot switch modes..." is in reply to someone who couldn't figure out why this guide does not work for Vista (because the title clearly says WinXP). Technically, it's possible, but if someone doesn't show the knowledge to even UNDERSTAND this guide, then it's better if they don't try.

My reply is more in line with telling someone that they cannot replace their car transmission, when they don't even know what a car transmission looks like or what it is supposed to do.

The way I found out the driver to use was partly trial-and-error. I looked up the Hardware ID's of the drive controller in Windows XP, then looked in the iastor.inf file under the [Strings] section to find the closest match:
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_282A&CC_0104.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) 82801HEM SATA RAID Controller"

I gave it a shot, and it worked. There is a decent chance that you will BSOD some time during this process if you do not do it properly, so be sure that you have backups / drive images / system restore points before attempting this.

    Dear Kent,

    I do not know computers... I have two questions in regards to installation protocol you have posted;

    1. I can not find neither iata76 nor iata78 by the link you provided. When I follow the link it gives me iata85ENU.exe ... Is it the same driver updated? Is it possible that old version of the driver worked, and new doesnt?

    2. Please explain how tho run "exe -a" via cmd, as you would try to explain it to a 6 years old kid...

    Thank you very much!

I had to make a few adjustments to the instructions to install on M1530(dual Vista/XP Pro) but was able to get it working by installing the driver from the Vista partition.

    Hi !

Thanks a lot for this guide kent1146 :)

So far... this has been my experience (I do own a M1530, but maybe this could help you too... Windows Xp Pro SP2 32 bits)... it does have a happy ending

After a clean install, had a working WinXP in ATA mode (not AHCI), and then...

Just like kent1146, I first installed the latest available "Intel Chipset Device Software" in IDE mode (file version 1.1.15.0 from 2 May 2008, filename: infinst_autol.exe).
That properly identified the controllers (under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers at Device Manager from System Properties's Hardware tab in Control Panel) as:

    • Intel ICH8M 3-port SATA Controller - 2828
      and
    • ICH8M UltraATA Storage Controllers - 2850
(instead of just all those generic controllers listed as "Primary and Secundary IDE Channels").

    Ok, so far... so good.

At this point I placed a folder named as "Intel" at the root (C:\Intel) with the latest available "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" (file version 12.0.49974 from 2 October 2008, filename: iata86enu.exe).

Now, if I try to run this file by double-click on it, I got the infamous "the computer doesn't meet the minimum requierment for installing this software" error and the installer setup is cancel.

To resolve this behavior, I used the following method (as pointed out by kent1146 at the very first post):

Open your "Start" menu (select the green "Start" button at your Taskbar, the one with the Microsoft Windows flag at one corner of your desktop). Now, click on the "Run..." icon (if you can't see it there, you will have to customize your "Start Menu" from the "Taskbar and Start Menu" icon on Control Panel) to enable this item (Run command) at the Advanced tab.
Let's continue... once you click the "Run..." icon, there is going to be a little popup window with a little "white input text box" drop down menu (yes, the one with the blinking cursor next to "Open:"). All you have to do is type "C:\Intel iata86enu.exe -a" in the box (without the quote marks)... (or whatever address you used to place this file on your system).

If you did it right, your drivers files are now located in C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Driver

Now, it is time to get back to the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers at Device Manager.

Follow the instructions in the fisrt post and double-click on the Intel ICH8M 3-port SATA Controller.
Go to Driver tab, and choose to Update Driver.
Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" once the Wizard prompts you for an action.
Don't Search. Select "I will choose the driver to install".
Click the "Have Disk" button. Point it to C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Driver
and click on the "Open" button.

Now, from all the listed options, I selected the "Intel(R) ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller". All there is left to do is to update the driver by click on Next. At this point, you will get something like..."windows does not recommend you to install this as it can not verify the hardware and your computer may be unusable if you do so.... do i still continue with that?". Just continue and update the driver.

After you install the driver and click OK out of every menu, reboot the laptop.

During reboot, get into the BIOS to turn "on" the AHCI mode and then "enable" once more the Flash Module.

There you go ! Congratulations  You now have a Windows XP that properly boot on AHCI with no BSOD!

Once all of the above has been completed, you may also want to go into Device Manager and check your HDD under Disk Drives. Select the "properties" for the drive... under the "Policies" tab you will find that "Enable Write Caching" on this disk is enabled. :D

    Quite nice, right ?! :)

    Enjoy.

At this point, I'm not really sure what to do with the "ICH8M UltraATA Storage Controllers - 2850" as it continue undisturbed under the Device Manager's IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers list.

Looks like there is no need at all to mess with it in order to enable the AHCI (once you already have used the "Intel ICH8M 3-port SATA Controller - 2828" just for that)... although Mike Keefer kind of "updated the drivers for every ICH8x controler" that he could find (including the ICH8M UltraATA using the same manual process with the extracted "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" iata86enu.exe files) and everythig works out just fine (for him).

You may want to check it too... post #50 at forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=254815&page=5 thread.

    Any ideas ? kent1146 ???

See you all... round n' around :p

Yes, first install the latest available "Intel Chipset Device Software" in IDE mode (file version 1.1.15.0 from 2 May 2008, filename: infinst_autol.exe).
That will properly identify the controllers (under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers at Device Manager from System Properties's Hardware tab in Control Panel) as:

    * Intel ICH8M 3-port SATA Controller - 2828
    and
    * ICH8M UltraATA Storage Controllers - 2850

(instead of just all those generic controllers listed as "Primary and Secundary IDE Channel").

    Be well ;)

    Never mind that

Looks like everything is at it should be :)

"ICH8M UltraATA Storage Controllers - 2850" its listed as such under Vista Device Manager too and also use the same Intel drivers 8.2.0.1011 (from 2006) as our current WinXp does (or should do :D ).

    Have fun

currently my xps is down due to some unknown reason. So it's time to install xp professional. I've got XP Prof SP2. I was wondering if I'll be able to install it properly. I have no idea about SATA thingy that is mentioned in the 1st page.

I'll also try installing linux later. So please et me know what is the best way to partition the HD. The HD is around 300 GB (one of those 320 GB, 5400 rpm)

    Cheers :)

Did exactly as explained in Kent's procedure and finally got it working.
Just one remark: when following the link to the Intel-site provided in the original post, the file found there was named "iata86enu.exe". Nevertheless this seemed to be the right one for me.
My hardware is a Toshiba Satellite L350-15O and the chipset in there is a ICH9/M/E 2-port SATA controller.

    Thanks a lot !!! :notworthy:

With a little work, I got kent1146's procedure to work. Machines I was successful on: Dell Latitude E5500, Inspiron 1525, Optiplex 755 (so far). Dell doesn't have a clue how to do this. When you call them they just tell you to use the ATA drivers. Download the drivers from the dell website, after you double click on the executeable and it puts the file in dell\drivers, look for the one that contains iastor.sys and iaahci.inf. follow steps 4, 5, 6, and 7. If you're unsuccessful, look at the inf file near the bottom for clues as to which controller to use.

    Thanks.

ok, I finally got XP to run on the M1530 XPS, but only in ADA. I have read the thread and tried pretty much everything everyone has said. The Intel ICH8M 3-port SATA Controller - 2828 file shows up under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in the device manager, but I can't get the files to extract to a folder on the C drive. The run command prompt method did not work either. The wireless is not working because there is no adapter visible on the system, the icon appeared after the drivers were loaded but n o adapter found. Is that because the system is not running on the AHCI? Does anyone know where to download a wireless adapter that will work with xp on the m-1530. Any ideas on getting the files extracted to the C drive?
    Please Help!

All the comments I've seen on the web confirm that there really is no advantage for a single disk laptop to be using AHCI. It does allow enhanced multiple request queuing and simultaneity, but unless you are networking multi- user databases or similiar using your laptop as a server, there is very little performance advantage.

    Awesome info.

I found that this got my laptop (Dell E6500) working with an AHCI controller called "PCI Device". Hey, at least it booted!

So, once I got booted, I then installed the AHCI driver available off the dell site.

    Thanks a lot,

    Doug

Thanks to all who have posted here. This was very helpful in my persuits to downgrade a HP Pavilion dv6130us which by the way has the ICH7M chipset. Hopefully this will be helpful for another dv6130us owner.

    Again thanks OP, great advise.
