Not that I use the CD/DVD to burn discs much, I noticed that when I do I get terrible burn rates. I just made a disc copy of my Vista DVD using 16x DVD discs and the drive shows a max speed of 8x, but my burn was only at a 1.5x speed. Is this what others are experiencing? I'm currently using the Roxio software that came with the laptop.

I have the latest firmware, but I'm experiencing the same problem. I'm using the latest version of Nero and it takes over 17 minutes to write a DVD at 8x speed.

I am experiencing slow burn rates as well.

When using DVD fab with 8X dual layer dvds the burn speed is from less than 1X up to 3.5X

I have the latest firm ware installed 6.0.6001.18000

It takes an hour to copy and burn a dual layer DVD.

    What gives?

    Yes.

Hp and Memorex; single layer and dual layer of each brand.

I have set the burn speed to 8X as well as set it to "fastest" and it will not go over 4X

The same problem but my optic unit is a TEAC DVW28SLC.

    - Not firmware upgrade.
    - I tried diff brands of DVD,s but this not resolved the problem.

The test on my xps no launch any problem of hardware, the problem must be in some configuration or in the operating system Windows Vista.

EDIT: I tested with windows xp and it's the same problem.

    Any solution for this?

    Sorry for my bad english.
    Thanks.

Slot loaders are notorious for horrific burn speeds, especially DL DVD's. It is just something that you are going to have to deal with. I really hate it too, but I only use it if I am desperate to burn something. If you need something quicker buy an external drive.

^^^ is there anywhere i can do more reading about that?

i was testing the speed of just reading, and did so by installing quake 3. it took 12 minutes on my 1530, but on my older laptop and a couple desktops it only took between 2 and 3 minutes.

I also experience similar burn rates in both vista, xp, and ubuntu 8.10.

Here are some tests i did using Nero:

    Old Toshiba using Toshiba DVD-ROM
    Avg speed: 5.17x
    Start: 3.35x
    End: 6.62x
    21% cpu usage at 4x

    M1530 with Mat****a
    Avg Speed: 2.79x
    Start: 1.69x
    End: 3.65x
    96% cpu usage at 4x!

additionally, all seek times for the M1530 were higher than the toshiba by several ms. Burst rate was 27MB/s for the tosh, and 22 MB/s for the M1530.

    thoughts?

Edit: its funny that the drive name for the dell is starred out, lol
