Currently my M1530 has the nvidia 8400M GS chip in it. I'm thinking about swapping the motherboard out for one with an 8600M chip on it. My question is, will it make much of a difference? How much greater is the 8600M w/ 256mb versus the 8400M w/ 128mb that is currently in my machine? Look forward to your responses.

    8600 is definitely more powerful....

depending on the cost, it might be a good swap...

or you could of course fleabay/craiglist your current m1530, that plus + the money you were going to spend for a new mobo (~$200?) on a better and more current and more powerful laptop

i have an 8400m gs in my droor, i swapped just the gpu in my inspiron 1520, i compared the 2 card on rthdribl. and the 8600m gt got about 10 fps higher than my 8400m gs overclocked. definately go for the 8600. awesome card.
