Ever since i installed the Bios A12 for XPS M1530, my battery has been giving me the "plugged in, not charging" message. I've read in other threads that going back to Bios A09 fixed the problem for some people. I want to try that myself, but the problem is i can't install Bios A09 because my available battery left is only 4%. And the only way i would be able to install the Bios A09 is if i have at east 10% battery available. Since my battery can't charge, i'm stuck. Does anyone have any suggestions or have any idea on how to fix this problem. Please help me. Thanks!

You could try with another adaptor and revert to A09.

Or you could ask dell to replace your faulty charger, I had the same problem, wouldnt charge when I updated to A12...
Seems like a revision update, since I got my new adaptor (Revision A01, it charges on A12)

    Hope it helps..

I'm with Ben on this...you might just want to call Dell, and have them replace the faulty charger /and or battery (possibly).

Same happened to me only eventually my battery actually died while I was using it on battery as it had only charged to 20% or so and refused to charge any further. So I called Dell and got a new battery and it immediately began to charge and has worked perfectly ever since.

I'm wondering if you need a new battery, or they need to send a Technician out to fix. Do you have onsite service?

Have you tried taking out the battery all together when you try to update the bios?

The M1530 has different states for a low battery and no battery at all (it doesn't show battery status, does not charge, etc.).

(I guess you probably have tried this, but you never know) :D

I have the same problem with Dell M 1530.Following is the sequence of events that happened.Wud be great if u can throw some light..!
1.I switched on the laptop. At that time laptop was not on AC.Before reaching the Windows (Vista 32 bit Home) icon laptop showed low battery and dies off.I am not sure if the battery was fully down or not.But definitely charge in battery was low.
2.I connected to AC and rebooted the system and laptop come up as usual.
3.And it was charging. But when I noticed a couple of hours I saw 'connected, not charging' message.
4.In last three days only a Windows update has happened.Otherwise no unusal operations.( Laptop not overused used etc.,)
5.Check with someone else adaptor..still not charging. But in between it charges for few minutes or maybe even 1 min.But has got stuck at 45% .Mine is 9 cell battery
5.Check all tricks ..to correct the problem.Replacing battery when power on,power off, shutting down holding power button 30-60 sec without battery etc.,
    Still no luck.
Can someone help me.Is out of warranty.

This just happened to me as well i have had my m1530 but i have only used the battery about 6-7 times. i am on A12 as well.

I called dell and they told me to let the battery die completly and leave it out of the system for 24hrs then let the system charge it while powered off for 24 hours then try to see if it worked.

my bios shows the adaptor as a 90 w when plugged in and non when removed. my battery apparently is out of warrenty i dont know the length of warrenty on batteries but it seems upsurd a battery used less than 10 times should break.

oh and my battery stops charging at 41%. so any ideas including how to downgrade to the bios would be cool.

its a common problem with dell xps models.
the charger failed. you can go into bios to take a look at battery health.
also, there is an online live chat to talk with dell technicians.
    its a super easy fix.

I just got off the phone with Dell AGAIN. Every time i call them they, tell me something different. Now they are going to send a technician to my house sometime this week to replace the motherboard (still under warranty). But i had to purchase a 9-cell battery. Hopefully this will finally solve all my problems. I'll keep you guys updated and let you know once everything is replaced if this will solve the "plugged in, not charging" problem.

you must revert to A09. you can do this by following instructions on a post on this forum incase you have <10% battery required to run the bios program from windows.

    the steps are basically
    0. plug in ac adapter
    1. create bootable USB or CDROM
    2. copy Dell A09 Bios executable to boot media
    3. reboot using newly created media
    4. run executeable with flag /forceit
    ie. dellbiosprogram.exe /forceit
    5. wait for bios update
    6. ???
    7. profit$

steps 6,7 is just kidding. good luck.

dell sent me a new charger i tried that it was only a 2 prong which is weird because mine had a 3, anyway it didnt seem to fix the problem..

I downgraded to A09 and what are the steps after that? the computer rebooted but the battery still was not charging. I unplugged the ac and then plugged it in and it only charged for a few seconds then stopped.

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!

the dell technician finally came to my house to replace the motherboard. he took about 1.5 hours. everything is working now. my battery is able to charge. i thought this wasn't going to work but it did. dell made me buy a battery but it hasn't even arrived yet. since my battery is working fine and able to charge, im probably going to return the 9-cell battery ($179.99!!!!!). so if you are having this same problem, i suggest you call dell (if you still got warranty) and have someone come to your house to replace the motherboard.

Ran into the same problem (plugged in, not charging). Was actually on rev A08. Upgraded to A12, still same problem. Came across this thread, downgraded to A09, problem solved. I just ran their exe from within Windows, which shut down windows and flashed automatically. Thanks for the info.

FYI to those people who think this is a A12 only problem:
I never upgraded to A12 from A09 and have been having the problem. I really hope that there is a better work-around then having Dell replace my practically new motherboard with someone's refurbished piece of $h!t motherboard...

I'm having the same problem but I've had A12 for awhile. It just started all of the sudden; however, it works with another charger that came with my Inspiron 9100, which actually requires more voltage. I have a feeling this is a Dell-Vista problem. Regardless, its unacceptable and I'm going to flip out at Dell tomorrow. I got my motherboard replaced 2 months ago so there is no way in hell I'm letting them touch my comp again.

I just had the same problem, and I solved it today.... but it was AWAYYY strange.

I have a xps M1530, my sister has a inspiron 1525... since I thought the problem might me the AC Adaptor, I tried to use hers, and although it is only 65W, it did charged my battery.
I then tried to use my AC adaptor on her computer, and it also wasn't charging.

I was sure that it was a problem on my AC adaptor when I saw this post. since I got my battery to 11%, I made a BIOS downgrade from A12 to A09, and then my battery started to charge with my AC Adaptor.

I solved my problem, but still can't explain all of of this :p

I've had the same power issue. My machine is out of warranty and I can't even launch the hardware chat, it points me based on my service tag to off-warranty support.

I have already called Dell about the issue while it was under warranty: they sent me a new AC adapter. That did not fix the problem, but eventually it went away and the battery started to charge.

Now the battery will not charge. I tried A06 and A09 BIOS and neither helped. The adapter shows up as either Unknown Device or 90W in the BIOS and the battery state shows as Idle. It's sitting at 7%.

I don't want to buy a new battery because the real thing (I'm not throwing a $50 Chinese battery in there) is $100 and my current battery shows 5/5 lit dots on the health check, and the OS shows it as fine.

    Anyone?

My problem is similar today on a Dell Inspirion 1420 with BIOS A09. After buying a new battery and it not charging either, I called a friend with a Dell laptop that I thought had a similar AC Adaptor. My adaptor would not light up the battery charge indicator. When I pugged his in, the battery charge indicator lit right up and the systray indicator now says charging. Both adapters were 65W Mine was a 2 prong which Dell replace over a year ago. My friends was a 3 prong tho. Makes me wonder. Off the buying a new adaptor.

hello people. i have an xps m1530 as well with exactly the same problem. I ended up buying replacement battery and power adapter which did not resolve the problem. my system was stuck on bios A12 and 4% battery life.

just this morning, having been frustrated by dell's response (lack of response, actually) i went off to pcworld where the very nice chap told me the most common problem is built up static in the power system.

    what he did was:

    1. shutdown the system
    2. take out the battery
    3. plug the adapter in for like 2-5 seconds (why? i don't know) and take it out again
    4. hold down the power up button on the laptop for between 20-30 seconds to clear out static
    5. power on the laptop with ONLY the adapter plugged in (no battery)
    6. shut it down again normally
    7. replace the battery
    8. power up again and then hold your breathe

he did this for me on the spot and i did not see the F1 message come up. however, when i got back home i did see the F1 message, but at least the battery was charging again.

he further explained that the build up and presence of static manifests when you press the power button, the LEDs light up, but the system does not power up. and i've seen that quite a bit on my laptop.

my battery is charging again and now i finally got rid of the F1 thingy now.
try it out now. it really resolved my issues.
